It will be interesting to see what motivates the competition even if it is from China.

This is what's sad. They will export to the entire world and offer slave labor, yet hate importing goods. Why do companies stand by these morals?

That and cool, China makes an OS..... you know how much censorship will be built right into it?

Why would they bother making a “new” operating system? Why wouldn’t they just do what so many others have done? Just take the Unix operating system and put a GUI (graphical user interface) on top of it?
In fact, they could probably either license or buy outright some small company that has a GUI plus some version of Unix. That would give them a “legitimate” operating system.

I can understand why they don’t want to use Windows – there’s no straightforward way to find out what backdoors it contains. But why don’t they just use Linux?

Instead of writing a whole new OS, they could put the effort into identifying areas where Linux apps are still not as good as Windows apps, and fixing them. For example, Photoshop isn’t available for Linux and the nearest equivalent, Gimp, arguably isn’t as good. Putting some work into enhancing Gimp would fix that one.
