Pocket-Lint: There's no arguing that this demo video of Quest Visual's new realtime iPhone translating app, Word Lens, isn't startling.

But whilst the technology is impressive, we do urge a bit of caution - we've tried the app ourselves and it didn't work nearly as smoothly as it seems to in the video.

The new iPhone app that can instantly translate foreign words as you watch

We've all been there. All the pointing in the world can get you absolutely nowhere if you can't converse a few words in the native tongue of the country you're in.

But now, wild gesticulation and saying the word very loudly in English, often the preferred message of a Briton abroad, looks set to be a thing of the past, provided you have an iPhone of course.

A new app has been developed that instantly translates words viewed through the phone's camera from Spanish into English, and back again.

WordLens uses the iPhone's inbuilt camera to recognise text that is viewed through the lens. At the moment it only works with Spanish but further languages are expected to follow.
