Canalys: Microsoft to Own Just 5 Percent of Rapidly Expanding Tablet Market in 2014

Maximum PC: Desktops aren't going anywhere, but neither are tablets, the latter of which are forecast to out-ship all other PC form factors combined to account for nearly half of the client PC market, according to Canalys. Tablet PC shipments grew 40 percent in the third quarter of 2013, which helped the overall PC market grow 18 percent even though traditional desktop and notebook shipments declined. Amid all this growth is a window of opportunity to monetize the frenzy, just like Intel did when netbooks were all the craze.

The biggest issue with how they measure the tablet market is that they don't count tablets with a dock or keyboard so the number eel be higher than 5% but I would expect this to rise quickly with the new tablets that are coming out as we are now starting to see more windows 8 tablets in ships at a resizable prices and windows 8.1 is a big step up from 8.0.

Exactly... If you can use it like a tablet PC, then it should be counted as one!

Surface series is thebest tablets in the world.

And yes I HAVE USED apple and droid.

Angerfist3801d ago

Well, but there is almost no support for it, atleast for RT. and the Tabs are too expensive and lack certain games and apps noone wants to miss.

Geez! Games? You want to play games? Get an Android tablet or an iPad.

For the rest of us who actually use our tablets for work, Windows tablets are much better.

I barely game on my tablet.

I do enjoy some tower defense games and Halo Spartan Assault at times but its mainly for productivity, web etc. Which it delivers in spades.

The form factor, docking k/b,usb port, micro sd slot, support of multiple video formats, office etc just makes it ideal for me.

When I game I'm on PC playing it the PROPER way not some half done touch controls, with shoddy graphics and manageable gameplay. Tablets have a long way to go before their games can be taken seriously.

lets be real here, look at some of the games on phones/tabs and you see a ton of quality games by now that have better graphics then a Wii without a doubt and some look better then first 360/Ps3 games.
Windows Phone is great though, i love it,and it finally gets the support it needs.

@pandehz I have to agree. I want out and got a Xoom on day one after deciding I wanted more form a tablet and gave my other half my Ipad but I still found my self having to power up my laptop to do some quite simple things like print off my pdf files from my Amazon Account.

When I heard about the surface I was all up for getting the Pro. After having a play with the RT and Pro I decided I wanted the 10 hour battery life over installing x32 apps. I jumped to the Surface RT and I have not looked back since. I often work at home and I work in IT support and I connect my external monitor to my Surface Via HDMI, I can use an external Mouse, access sharepoint, VPN into my office and customers, Run VNC, Outlook (Now I have 8.1) edit office documents and PDF's as well as connect it to my printer with no need of another device in the middle and also access everything on my home server. To add to that I can unplug everything and I have access to all the Apps I want and need as I am not into gaming on my tablet so don't miss Apps like Candy crush ect I own a Xbox one and WiiU for real gaming.

I also like how I can plug in my 360 wifi controller connector and control the games I have got for it with the controller on the TV.

The reaction I have got from people who want or own a tablet Apple and Android have all said they would definitely look at a windows tablet when they look to upgrade and I know 4 who have gone out an got a Surface after using mine and 2 are students.

Just got an asus t100 even though I despise Microsoft with a passion. I'm a student so it fits my needs right now. I need it to be light weight in my backpack and to edit word docs for papers and have compatible browser. Until apple makes something similar the t100 will suffice.

ChrisW3801d ago

SIGH... if you despise an OS with a passion, then install one that you like! There are a couple OSs that are fully compatible with the Asus t100!!!

Pillsbury13800d ago

Didn't say I hate the os I said I hate Microsoft as a company. Are there other os that have touch capabilities?
