What will the gains be like? Worth it?

ProjectVulcan3819d ago (Edited 3819d ago )

Probably not. At least not at first.

The problem is obviously that although maximum throughput in terms of raw bandwidth increases, the latency increases just as much.

CPU designs are constantly compensating for this, as they always have been every time a new technology introduces more latency e.g multi core.

Once we have processors with more advanced memory controllers designed for this memory, we'll see more useful gains.

This is much like how DDR3 on intel core 2 processors on the X38 and later chipsets only improved them marginally.

However when coupled with the state of the art (for 2008) triple channel integrated memory controller on the Intel i7 9xx Bloomfield processor family, the memory system improvements were genuinely huge.

God damn i wonder how much it will cost.

I wonder what a ddr4 mobo will cost?

It's been a long time coming :D

Nocando3819d ago

Well, I just sunk about $1200 into a very nice rig, I am good for at least a few years. Although I am constantly tempted to upgrade, I need to leave well enough alone for awhile.

by the time your ready for another upgrade DDR4 will be cheaper.
