Haswell vs. Ivy Bridge: A Look at Old and New

PCMAG: Every year about this time Intel releases a new set of processors on the scene, with a laundry list of improvements over the previous generation. This time around, it's the fourth-generation Intel Core processors (codenamed Haswell). But that doesn't mean that last year's third generation Intel Core CPUs (codenamed Ivy Bridge) is going away. Instead, Ivy Bridge will become the processor you'll see in PCs for the cost-conscious custome. But is Haswell really that much of an improvement over Ivy Bridge? We break down that has changed (and what hasn't) between Haswell and Ivy Bridge.

I've always been an Intel fan, but that was before I researched AMD CPUs. It seems anytime you want to upgrade to a faster processor with Intel, you have to buy a whole new mother board.

Yep. This how Intel has always been. With one socket type you usually get 2 generations (3 if you're lucky) before needing a motherboard change to support the new procs. AMD gives you a bit more stretch for their sockets (AM2+ was around for a while).

Intel is still edging AMD a bit on the Price vs. Power vs. Thermal comparisons (if just barely). I'd still go AMD on graphics as they are generally cooler and cheaper than Nvidia with fairly comparable performance.

All that said Ivy Bridge is still more than enough for the mainstream user. Performance nuts are constantly upgrading their equipment and burning through money like bone dry kindling anyway - so what's another motherboard - they were probably getting a new motherboard regardless of a socket change or not.

If you are a bare bones budget builder I recommend an AMD-based system (through and through). If you are in the middle as a mainstream user you can mix and match to your liking and your final budget. Performance users, well sky's the limit.

I would count muself as a performance user, but nonetheless, I absolutely agree with you. I was really surprised to learn that after a while being in these waters. I've somehow always considered AMD to be at least one grade below Intel in every sense, including this one.
