Forget the Cellphone Fight — We Should Be Allowed to Unlock Everything We Own

Wired: While Congress is working on legislation to re-legalize cellphone unlocking, let’s acknowledge the real issue: The copyright laws that made unlocking illegal in the first place. Who owns our stuff? The answer used to be obvious. Now, with electronics integrated into just about everything we buy, the answer has changed.

This is such a grey area to me.

On one hand a jail broken phone can grant you access to other wireless carriers and jailbroken apps.

On the other hand a jail broken console can grant you access to homebrew and pirated goods.

[Sigh] Nothin but shades of gray.

I really think they should be locked, since this is a classic case of giving an inch and someone taking a mile...

For years I've heard that open source people wouldn't go into the darker areas if companies were open source to begin with. However, in any case where something was open sourced, I can recall people instantly working on getting piracy working asap. Ultimately a lot of the open source people cause the piracy to open and in some cases make their own problem.

Like Geohot and the PS3. The second he found something via other OS, Sony removed the feature. This in turn outraged people and resulted in even more people trying to hack Sony in revenge? This went on to lead to piracy and other awful things, but it all started by Sony trying to prevent hackers.

Thats the sad reality to this problem. Too many people care more about what they want and don't care about the price to get it. Perhaps the irony is that they're trying to get freedom, but in turn cause most of the locks / prevention.

I don't own a jailboken phone or ps3 myself. As such I can't help but notice how blurred the lines have become regarding ps3 CFW. I've seen some really great game mods for Mortal Kombat and some nice implementations of remote play on youtube.

I could sort of understand some of the reason behind jail breaking a ps3... just not all of it. I'd like to see legitimate mods again similar to what Epic did with Unreal Tournament 3. That gave it more replay value than it would of otherwise had... despite being prone to crashes. lol
