Nvidia compares PS4 specs to a 'low-end CPU'

Techradar: The PlayStation 4 announcement last month immediately led to a PS4 vs Xbox 720 debate, but perhaps Sony and Microsoft's next-generation consoles are competing for second place.
"Compared to gaming PCs, the PS4 specs are in the neighborhood of a low-end CPU, and a low- to mid-range GPU side," said Nvidia's Tony Tamasi to TechRadar.

He speaketh the truth, though the 8GB of unified GDDR5 memory has been getting a lot of hype.

Sounds like sour grapes, AMD have the console market pretty much sewn up but neither company are really focussed on PC gaming right now. Both companies are just refreshing their line-up by producing cards from existing stock like the Titan and ARES II. While AMD are heavily invested in the console market nVidia seem focussed on their mobile Tegra chipset.

Why would Nvidia even bother to comment? Could it be that they stand to loose a bit of market share?

I'm just guessing here...

I don't think so. There isn't likely to be many AMD stickers on the machine.

Nvidia really are speaking the truth of the matter, they are being perfectly honest although the question is probably....who asked them anyway.

I think that Nvidia most likely offered Sony a better GPU, but at a greater cost partially because of the GPU and partially because AMD agreed to deliver the whole thing on an SoC including the CPU and the buses, cutting costs massively and simplify their supply chain.

Nvidia probably envisioned a much more powerful machine for sony but ended up rejected on cost basis.

Nvidia have a reputation for demanding a good margin and Sony were almost certainly looking to pack as much punch but at a manageable price after being stung by the cost of PS3 hardware.

I keep hearing rumors about how Nvidia overcharged for the first xbox and ps3. I'm not really how much any of that is true.
