Social media: Why do we all need to be ‘liked’ so much?

Planet Ivy: Before the 2004 launch of Facebook, we were usually only concerned with being liked by our friends, family and co-workers. Nearly a decade later, with social media having broadened it’s scope with the likes of Twitter and Tumblr, having people ‘like’ you has taken on a whole new meaning.

Everybody wants to be liked to some extent. We can’t help it. Psychologists say the desire is primal; an instinct from a time when having friends was a matter of life and death.

Everyone uses Facebook to fill the social void in their life so they need a reason to feel like anyone cares about them or what they have to say. Some people really need to get a life.

Businesses and entrepreuners can also gain money/status from the likes, it's not just aimless content absorption.

People just want to feel popular. I don't blame it on the Romans, I blame this mentality on our schooling. Everyone gets that desire to be popular in school as a kid and especially as a young teenager, so that mentality is forever ingrained in our minds. Facebook and these social sites are nothing more than a place where you hang out and have the desire to feel important and popular among your peers. If you go through school as a popular kid you expect it and want it to be that way your entire life. If you're not popular you yearn to feel that. You can't escape it.

And there is some financial drive behind it all. But then again, why do we want so much money? So we can have all this money and all these things which in turn makes us more attractive, popular and easily accepted in society. No one would give two shits about money and material things if they were forced to live on an island alone with these things.

The way I see life is like this..no one person will truly be loved more than any other. It's impossible for any one person to spend the quality time with all of these thousands of people to be loved. If one person leaves your life another enters. everyone has their 15-20 give or take people in their life they love and that live them. Joe blow down the road will be truly loved in his life just as much as Justin Bieber. Bieber is just fooled by Aura, which over time fades out, and he'll see this.
