Techradar: Battery life is one of the biggest issues in the Android world today. Take your SIM card out, turn off Wi-Fi and never touch it and it'll sit there happily, lasting for a whole week on one charge. But try to use it for anything "smart" and, well, that's where the problems start.

Sadly there is sh*t within Android that just runs in the background for the sake of it. You can't delete it and you have no option to disable it. Google processes will just start even if they are not in use.

Loading an app only to have it 'cache' a process once its closed is also a big culprit and will rape your battery if unchecked.

Basic rule of thumb on a Samsung S phone: Load app, use it, close it, go to 'Settings > Applications > Running' and kill off whatever has decided to open since the last time you checked.
