Only way it will happen is if Google or a known established brand develops a really good looking OS. Maybe Mozilla, but their name isn't really that branded anymore.

However when they do it, they would need to do two things to even compete

1 Market the hell out of it, and make it seem hip. Give away a TON of copies of it for free as marketing, just to get people using it. Easy access, discounted or free units, to college students etc....Then appeal to the "casual" crowd.

2 Work with PC makers, if they don't simply make their own like Apple does. But work with Toshiba, Dell, HP or whatever to help market and get the OS into their customers hands. Include it as an option if you can't get it pre-installed.

I think right now is the perfect time for someone to put a dent into MS because Windows 8 is all about tablets, and the hardcore PC people are a bit angry about it. MS pretty much shoots themselves in the foot every other OS. Vista for example after the awesome XP, then save themselves with 7.

Overall a new OS from a third company needs to be better or do something simply different, and it needs to be visually appealing. I've seen OS' come and go, and while they functioned better, the out dated or crap look destroys them.

sheesh what a blatant ripoff of XP why would someone go through all the headaches of living with their development cycles In a serious environment for productivity and progress. when tested and secure os schedule is already executed and maintained by Microsoft as a business you just don't up lift your systems over night and switch to some lesser known os that could end any month.

A+ for effort and good attempt for them. but the mainstream is already saturated with operating system choices.

if ubuntu, suse and mint can barely make a dent what are they smoking to think that they can.

i will however try out this os for fun on an old machine, but as far as ending a monopoly they are drunk.

Reactos original purpose was to make a functional clone of windows 95 using there fresh code. As such it would run native Windows apps without problems.

There doing well actually if they can get to win 7 standard jobs done

Sorry MS doesn't have a "monopoly". There are plenty of other options available.
