School forces students to reveal Facebook activity, unlock smartphones

RawStory: A middle school outside Chicago has one mom on a privacy rampage after her daughter claimed administrators forced her to log into her Facebook page so they could inspect her online social activities.

This mom’s rampage has now taken her all the way to the front page of MSNBC.com, where she claims that school officials have told her they commonly inspect social media and even have students unlock their smartphones, all in the name of protecting the educational environment.

Surely very much illegal...

Hopefully, I'm hearing a lot of negative things about Facebook lately...apparently some employees want peoples password, it's completely ridiculous.

Good for the school they should stop cyberbullying @ the source but they should have parents permission first

They're kids - Many of them can't handle privacy yet... Can't say I agree with the Mom, but I do understand her concerns.

The school seems to argue that they will investigate social history when accusations (and thus reasonable suspicion) are made. I see nothing wrong with that.

'They're kids - Many of them can't handle privacy yet'

The age requirement to join Facebook is 13, as long as you're over that age then you're entitled to the same right to privacy as someone who was aged 30.

That's Facebook policy, not something backed up by extensive research in human psychology.

@sjaakiejj "The school seems to argue that they will investigate social history when accusations (and thus reasonable suspicion) are made. I see nothing wrong with that.".

Surly this should be something that only two sets of people should be allowed to do, like parents and police.

The school has a lot of children to protect from each other. Before Facebook, teachers confiscated phones and notes. There's no difference here, only that now it's online.
