Seagate Hit with Class Action Lawsuit for High Failure Rates

GamersNexus: "Seagate's year started off with a declaration of significant downturn in its revenue and profits, and the company now faces additional challenges from a Class Action consumer complaint. The complaint has been levied against the company for “breach of consumer protection, unfair competition and false advertising […] and unjust enrichment,” something which law firm Hagens Berman contests should yield rewards for affected consumers."

Seagate are attrocious in terms of reliability. I'd never get anything with their name on it again after losing three harddrives in quick succession.

Really? I've never had a Seagate die... I have a 750gb in my desktop I've been using for over 10 years. Western Digital is the brand I've had issues with. I don't even want to try to count how many my books I've seen crap out. I've lost a lot of valuable data (and subsequently money) because of their drives. I do video production for a living, so we give our drives a hell of a workout daily.

I had a Seagate external drive and it failed after 6 months :( Taking my chances with Western Digital now.

I remember losing 2 tb of data, luckily a lot of those files I had made available though a DC++ hub and got most of it back. But I never went with a Seagate drive after that even worse when they bought out Lacie as that was the company I moved too initially.

I'm curious because I bought the 2TB X-HDD popped it open to put in ps4 and it said with big letters Samsung.... so when you say Seagate maybe you should clarify? Funny how there's no mention of the 2TB, what is going on? Can someone confirm if the 3-4TB is Samsung?

Had very little issue with WD stuff. Big fan of the the Samsung M3 USB drivers as my general media storage units.

All my PC hard drives are WD and they've lasted for years. The one time I had a problem with WD was shipping related. Bought an Alienware laptop but I figured it was mishandled as both the mobo and hard drive were faulty. Got them both replaced on warranty and it's been two years now with no issues. My last laptop lasted 6 years and the mobo fried but I still use the HDD as an external slave to pull files.

Not surprised, WD stuff has always had better reliability.

Skate-AK2997d ago

Oh man. I never knew about them having issues. I bought my hard drive about 1 year and 8 months ago. I really hope it doesn't fail.

Oh, wow. This is pretty surprising to me. I've had one of their external harddrives since 2005. Sure, it's only 75Gbs and requires its own power, but it's survived.

Seagate use to be a reliable..,

But I recall that the failures, began to occur after the acquisition of IBMs Deskstar division.

gizmig2997d ago

Due to regular failures recently people are definitely opting for the next competitor i.e. WD.
