Regular marijuana use bad for teenagers’ brains, according to recent studies

If you’re a teenager puffing away pot on a regular basis, you may want to curb your smoky habit, according to new research. Frequent marijuana use can have a significant negative effect on the brains of teenagers and young adults, including cognitive decline, poor attention and memory, and decreased IQ, according to psychologists discussing public health implications of marijuana legalization at the American Psychological Association’s 122nd Annual Convention.

Glad I never touched it until I was around 20. Not so good for a developing brain.

Blasphemy3536d ago

I didn't need a study to know this. I know when I was younger I used to hang around teens that would smoke weed and they seemed so dumb to me. I knew it was the weed.

"Cognitive decline, poor attention and memory, and decreased IQ"

Uhhhh... News flash! Those are the common side effects of long term marijuana use.

In other words.

STONED.

STONERS ARE BRAIN DEAD.

Ok, wow, these agenda based "studies" are hilarious... first of all, what's your control group vs. your experimental group? I highly doubt that they took a bunch of potential honor roll students and had them smoke 5 joints a day, for months or years, and then said "Yep, this really f&$%ed these kids up! Sorry about that!"

They studied from birth to adulthood... a group of 2,000+... clearly only focusing on those who had smoked heavily. This could very well be a false positive. Perhaps the people who rely on smoking that regularly, at that young an age, didn't have quite the mental "headstart" as others?

This is similar to the argument that MJ is a gateway drug, which it is not. There is 0 evidence to suggest this. It is a matter of people who are willing to do hard drugs, are going to do them anyway, MJ doesn't cause this behavior. The use of it is simply a function of that individual.

Furthermore, it's also like saying that it causes schizophrenia - which, again, has no evidence and is in fact almost completely opposite. The current scientific research actually indicates that schizophrenic behavior and onset is curbed by MJ usage, that it may actually HELP these people cope. As a result, the correlation is skewed and the agenda pushers see an opportunity to invoke fear around MJ use to protect the deep pockets of the industries paying them to paint this negative light.

Can it be dangerous? Yes!
Can it lead to a drop in motivation? Yes!
Does it cause problems? Yes!

But when compared to alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceuticals? If you think that the risk of MJ is even in the same ballpark, you are a brainwashed fool. Look at the ACTUAL research... not this spin cycle BS that is being funded by the alcohol, tobacco, pharma, prison and law enforcement systems.

but why are you so angry? just admit its not healthy either, period.

Audiggity3536d ago

I'm mad because I've seen how lobbyists and big money can overturn science.

You are convinced it isn't healthy... to smoke it? Perhaps not. But are you certain it isn't healthy to ingest it in other ways?

"I'm mad because I've seen how lobbyists and big money can overturn science"

In that I completely agree with you.
I Know marijuana can be used successfully for medical purposes, what I dont like is when people treat it like if it was the all mighty all in one medicine.

Blasphemy3536d ago (Edited 3536d ago )

@Audiggity I'm guessing you smoke it on the regular? I don't know why you are trying to rationally advocate that this article is wrong with no real facts of your own. Like I said above, I didn't need to read this article to know that smoking marijuana on the regular literally makes you dumb.

Audiggity3536d ago

That is a logical guess, but, no, unfortunately I don't/can't...

Every point I mentioned above has SERIOUS research behind it. I'd happily dig it all up for you, but I'm afraid I don't have the time.

My point was: Perhaps the people who are willing to smoke it all day, every day, weren't very bright to begin with! These studies are in place to point fingers at the substance, and not the people. Doing that allows for continued revenue streams to flow into pharma, alcohol, prison and law enforcement industries.

Do a quick Google search on how much money is made from MJ incarcerations since the prison system was privatized.
