Solar or grass? New rooftops in France must be ‘green’

Over the last year or so, alternative energy has been slowly replacing some of our more traditional sources of power across the globe. Electric cars are also on the rage as more manufacturers compete to come out with the most efficient and stylish EV on the market. More and more people are looking out for the environment, because you know, we live in it.

Burning diesel and huffing freedom... MURICA'!

Dasteru3306d ago (Edited 3306d ago )

...You need special permits and have to pay additional taxes just to put solar panels on your own house roof.

Murica, where the government & energy companies force you to continue paying them even when they are no longer providing a service.

Soldierone3306d ago

Our state (in US) is currently debating if they will allow electric companies to charge people with solar panels an extra $125 a month.... (Currently it's an extra $25)

It's seriously stupid. It's worth pointing out, we pay over $500 during summer here as-is because it's so hot.

thorstein3306d ago

Sad. Incredibly sad. I know that in some states the utility must pay you if you put energy into the grid.

SniperControl3306d ago (Edited 3306d ago )

In the UK, electric companies actually pay you if your panels are attached to the grid and producing excess electricity.

Also, the government will give out grants to buy the panels with.

They are always ahead of the rest in making their country a better and safer place.... Banning the cultists from covering up their faces was a good move, now they make moves towards being eco friendly.

SpringHeeledJack3306d ago

While banning a religious veil is a good thing, nobody should go round hiding their face in name of a religion. Let's not forget france's energy is near 100 percent nuclear and they are building more, hardly green and ahead of everybody else.

SilentNegotiator3306d ago

Nuclear energy follows a pretty dated concept of doing whatever benefits us the most now and worrying about consequences later. It will only help the environment until we have loads of waste that we have no real permanent solution for disposing of or a complication occurs like in Japan after that Tsunami.

We need to work towards solar and wind, not nuclear, "clean" coal, etc.

kingjosh18763306d ago

I dislike the religious veils and face covers because it makes them seem isolated and alienated from other people out in public.

I dread to think what will happen if they colonize Mars or the moon, they will start sending all the nuclear waste there to dump in craters - ruining yet other planetary bodies.

S2Killinit3306d ago (Edited 3306d ago )

"Cultists". A little extreme wouldnt you say? While i may not agree with people with the tradition to cover up like that, i would fight for their right to do it. Thats a fundemental principal of a free society. In that regard we (US) are ahead of the French. I personally find your comment to be a bit insensetive/intolerant.

The rooftops idea is great of course. Although isnt watering plants also a drain on resources? I always thought golf courses were good for the environment until i heard the reverse argument that they are horrible because so much goes into the maintanance of the grass that its actually bad for the environment.

SpringHeeledJack3306d ago

But they already do have the right to wear the veil n hide their face in plenty of countries in the (Iran, saudi arabia) just two examples.

The veil has no place in france or a western culture and i would fight for a countries right to keep its culture.

You have to put a stop somewhere and the veil is a good start, its unpractical in a work environment, education environment, court room, banks etc. It's rude to others too. Unless there is a medical reason it should be banned.

S2Killinit3306d ago (Edited 3306d ago )

First, the veil is not worn in Iran, it is however worn in Saudi Arabia. But the fact that they have a place to wear their veil doesn't take away their right to do it elsewhere if they wish to.

You mentioned that a country has a right to keep its culture. There lies the problem, a country has no rights other than those of its people. That means that the people of a country can make decisions regarding both things that are personal to each individual in that country AND decisions regarding the future direction of that country as a whole. However, once that country makes a decision to allow people from other parts of the world, and accepts them (assuming they are not illegal), those people are now the people of that country and have the right to live how they wish just like everyone else. This includes the right to be free from the tyrrany of the majority.

You mentioned that you would fight to keep a country's culture. That is not your place to do so. Your country accepted certain people with a certain way of life inside its borders. Your country's laws are made by your representatives. Once your laws accepted them in, you gained the benefits that come with having immigrants in your country. In return these immigrants were promised the benefits of the host nation. You cannot now tell them that they cannot do what is customary to them, even though you knew who they were when you let them in.

Your practicality argument is sound. But that does not require all encompasing laws to ban veils altogether.

So no, you should not fight for taking people's freedom just because you dont like their traditions. You CAN however, vote for immigration laws that prevent them from coming to your country.

Mr_cheese3306d ago

The UK needs to follow suit. It's a very good start but needs to keep going to the point where we definitely do not need oil and barely rely on electric companies
companies. Too long have we been imprisoned by these geeedy corporate giants

Hopefully this sets a precedent throughout the EU !
