This could possibly be the future. Very interesting.

mushroomwig3384d ago

I don't know how that makes me feel, actually quite sad in a way. I love owning a console, having a controller sticking out of a TV and streaming my games just seems a little more lonely.

Tzuno3384d ago

If gamers support this well....welcome to a age where you pay and own nothing, 60$digital? they cut the cost with digital so much and they still sell at 60$? no ty, that's why piratery exists

BLACKBIBLE3384d ago

I've been saying this forever consoles will soon be obsolete

mike32UK3384d ago

You've been saying it forever and yet it still hasn't happened. What does that tell you?

s45gr323384d ago

Sadly BlackBible is correct with Playstation TV/Now already getting tested and ready for next generation. Then what then will be the purpose to own a console. Sony and Microsoft know for sure that in order to survive in today's gaming industry they need to sell Netflix gaming services. The hardware battle is lost to PCs and smartphones/tablets, even today's tvs come with duo core processors and access to Netflix, Facebook, Crunchyroll, Hulu, etc. Eliminating consoles from the home entertainment battle. This leads Sony and Microsoft with the only solution and that is Netflix gaming like services in order to survive and make money.

mike32UK3384d ago

No, he isn't correct. I've said this numerous times on other articles, the infrastructure of our Internet In any country is no where near stable enough (at least not in a ubiquitous sense) to support a streaming only gaming world. Gaming streaming will take off, but it will merely coexist with consoleso. what Soby is offering here is choice (an alternative), not a replacement.

JsonHenry3382d ago

The only thing keeping this from happening is our current state of (pathetic!) internet in most countries around the globe.

Give it time though. Once speeds get fast enough say goodbye to your console and most likely your PC as well. Everything will be virtualized.

LightDiego3384d ago

That's because you know nothing.

extermin8or3384d ago

This is only ps3 games, and eventually ps2 and ps1 games. Much as I love PlayStation exclusives if they go hardware less I go pc only. Not paying stupid prices to only ever rent streaming time of games and have psn downtime whatever its cause kill my entire gaming library... No way in hell. I like paying the one off fee and owning that game to play as much as I damn well like. Sony will use this to allow people to play previous gen games and It won't get ps4 games till after PS5's release. (They as good as said as much). The worldwide internet infrastructure isn't good enough to go streaming only anyway and as graphics etc increase greater and greater bandwidth will always be needed so likely there may never be an infrastructure capable of keeping up. Hardware isn't going anywhere

s45gr323383d ago

Well for PC that is, were hardware will always be there along with bleeding edge graphics. Sorry not on consoles lol, and Onlive proved that heavy graphic games like L.A. Noire can be done on the cloud. Games can still be owned by allowing gamers to buy say games and store them on external hard drives or usb sticks. Now, if gamers were to put an end to their loyalty to corporations, then and only then will console gaming will improve.

sardines3384d ago

I think we are a long way still from any device replacing consoles. Being reliant on fast internet just wont work for many people all over thr world. And so many devices out now for gaming. None of which i feel do the job as effectively yet.

s45gr323384d ago

This is the last generation of consoles sorry

sardines3383d ago

I heard many people say the same last generation. I wouldnt be upset to find your all right this time around and by the time this generation is done things will have come a long way im sure.

Jrmy843379d ago (Edited 3379d ago )

No it isn't people have been saying that same thing, just like the people who say the world is going to end for years and years. Nintendo I'm sure already has another console in the making, I'm sorry but with the PS4 sales skyrocketing and these PlayStation Now games being only last gen games of which many own, I don't think Sony is that stupid.

Ninte3384d ago

Well people are slowly moving away from paid cable services to Netflix and other tv services and a lot of us are downloading music over cds and i would be happy to play games with out the disc because my nephews dont look after things vey well

extermin8or3384d ago

There is a difference between tv and games. Tv and films cost less it's easier to have them as part of a subscription but games cost alot more bit as easy, they use up more bandwidth than tv aswell so cost more to host. Therefore services aren't comparable.

s45gr323383d ago

TV and films cost more than games. Look at Avatar, The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, even Titanic cost like $500.00 million or more to makr. Now the real difference between games and film is that one is passive and the other is interactive. What this means is easier to stream a passive experience than an interactive one; for one is the input lag of when a player pushes a button on say gamepad and the game character moves or attacks. The other is the framerates when a swarm of enemies or lots of action is going on it may drop. If Sony manages to overcome those issues then PlayStation Now will succeed. Cloud gaming will come sooner than console gamers think.

s45gr323384d ago

Yes, the end of the console hardware is near and soon I will be enjoying Playstation Now, Xbox Live, etc. through my smart tv. No more dealing with hardware oh yes.

extermin8or3384d ago

And playing previous gen games then... It would seem.
