Sourcing, Reports and Story Quality/Variety

Alright guys your friendly neighborhood SiteManager here with another blog about the Rules and Regulations here at TechSpy. Please contain the excitement, I know this is the type of stuff you come here for so I will do my best not to ruin the great time.

--Sourcing--

When posting a story, always link to the original source of the story. Many websites recycle news from other websites, so whenever possible try and track down the true source of the story and use that site’s story as the basis for your news post. You can still give credit to the website you first found the story on by putting their address in the "Credit URL" form.

Word to webmasters and staff members: You should always submit using the original source URL where you found the news. You can input your article you wrote on your website in the "Credit URL" box.

If your story links to a website that is not in English, you should link to a translated version of the story using Google Translate.

Internet forums and message boards do not normally qualify as a reliable source. However, linking to screenshots, scans, images, and videos posted on forums is ok. You can also link to forum posts if the post is made by an industry professional. Twitter posts are also an acceptable source of news, but only if they are made by an industry professional.

--A Story within a Story--

Sometimes a site does an interview with an industry professional where newsworthy information is revealed deep inside the interview. Other websites often create separate news stories focusing on specific bits of information that are of special interest to their readers. Even if the original interview is already posted it is ok to also post these side stories if the original post did not focus on this newsworthy information.

So these are ripped right from the News Posting Guidelines, but I will further discuss the reasoning behind them as they do differ a bit from "Other" aggregate type news sites.

TechSpy is about a tech-focused community, a site that users can come to read and talk about the latest in Tech. That means that it is important that the news on TechSpy reflects the most original source. For webmasters, TechSpy can be a valuable tool to build an audience, but that does not supercede the fact that the news and community is the main focus here at TechSpy as opposed to funneling hits to websites.

This leads directly into the "Story within a Story" as well. By no means are we simply trying to "Cater" to the large mainstream sites but the fact of the matter is that they usually get the breaking and exclusive news or interviews over small sites.

A story within a story is a great way for the smaller sites or sometimes even the larger sites to go much more in depth on facts and news brought up in the "Main" stories. These type of stories are perfectly acceptable and usually bring to light things that might have been looked passed in the original article by many people.

However, you can see the difference in a "Story within a Story" and a write up of the exact same story by a different site. Also keep in mind that our editors reserve the right to change the link of your news post if your article is not the original source of the story. If the main url is changed your site will still get credit through a "Via Link". Usually we try to catch things like this in Pending but we will be stepping up our retro active fixing of sourcing from now on.

--Falsely Inflating the Heat of a Story--

For the most part this often isn't a problem, However from time to time there will be a few stories or even a certain site constantly trying to find ways to falsely inflate the temperature of their story while it sits in pending.

While this might seem like a great way to beat the system and get your story noticed, in the end it will actually get your story or possibly even your site reduced from even appearing on the front page at all.

Our editors can also set the temperature of a story. So when it is obvious that a story is using inflation tactics, stories will be set to 0 and locked which means they will never get above 10 degrees. So save yourself the hassle.

--Plagiarism--

Plagiarism in any academic, professional, or journalistic field, is something to be taken seriously. Any sign or even hint of plagiarism is taken seriously here at TechSpy. Restrictions and possibly even full site bans are handed out in cases that can be proven.

--Rating Story Sources--

Another tool that can be used by the members is the source ranking system here at TechSpy. If you see a story of low quality and/or a site of low quality, rate it. This can be done by simply clicking on the site's name under the "Read Full Story" button at the bottom of the description.

This feature unfortunately seems to be underused and is a great tool in maintaining quality here at TechSpy. This gives everyone more of an idea as to the quality of a site, and is something that should be used on a regular basis to push the best sites to the top and the low quality sites completely off the front page.

--Misc.--

Members in the contributing section have many different reasons for posting, whether it be adding content, trying to catch the top prizes and/or doing a bit of self promotion. However, it should be noted that for the whole thing to work, managing is a big piece of the puzzle and an important aspect of our community.

Remember, we are all trying to build TechSpy's user base and popularity. It is a symbiotic relationship between the members and the site. Without effort on both sides neither will thrive.

Also, don't forget to follow the basics like checking for the story's original source, checking for dupes and making sure the content is of worthy cause.

As always thanks to all the loyal members of TechSpy and if you have any questions or comments feel free to leave them in the comment section.

I am disappointed the credit URL issue was not changed. It sounds weird to not have the original story as credit. It makes it sound like the other site is the source of the information.

I removed my news post as I would have had to swap the links to the story. This would have made it look like my site was the original source of information. This does not make sense.

In addition, a site then posted the exact same story without even giving credit awhile later and got away with it just fine. I pmmed syko with more details as I don't want to publicly embarrass a particular user/ site.

I mean the incentive to try and give credit to the original story isn't really there and a lot of sites are getting away with not even bothering with it. Unfortunately, I may start doing the same thing as the current system just doesn't make sense. Again, I would be just fine with putting the original source in the credit URL as it makes sense.

Well here's the deal behind it. Let's say Site A breaks a huge story (e.g. Gizmodo breaking the iPhone 4 leak), and then site B writes about it, who do you think should get the most hits? Shouldn't Site A get a significant bit of the credit?

Also if you have any issues with another site breaking the rules, please hit me up or another Admin/Mod and we will take care of it.

zmack4767d ago (Edited 4767d ago )

Also, site B is the one who chooses to spread information to this website so IMO it is also fair for them to get some attention, but in a way that doesn't make site B look like it is the source of information (credit URL)

"Also, site B is the one who chooses to spread information to this website so IMO it is also fair for them to get some attention, but in a way that doesn't make site B look like it is the source of information (credit URL)."

There is your answer... so Site B gets the Credit slot, while Site A gets the Source slot...

Also you keep talking about other sites breaking the rules but I've yet to see a message in my inbox about who has broken the rules. There are a lot of posts and I can't sift through all of them, so we are hoping that members like yourself can help in the effort, which is why you all have managing powers. Syko sometimes is busy with other stuff (e.g. life) so you can always hit me up if you have issues cause I'm covering when the other guys are off duty etc etc.

The rules have been in place for maybe 4-5 years now (at N4G as passed on), so you would have to take your claim directly to the top site admin, which would be Dusty, since he calls the shots. Otherwise, my analogy stands as is.

zmack4767d ago (Edited 4767d ago )

My point is that the credit URL looks like it is the source. That is what I am saying. When I first started posting here that is what I thought and from a readers perspective that is most likely what they will be thinking as well: The idea that the credit url is used to give credit to the original story.

You probably haven't gotten any messages since I am not a mod here and I am sure there are a few users here that were abusing the system to begin with. I am upset about the issue, but I also have real life things going on as well. I am not going to police other websites as I don't have time. I did however send one particular link to Syko, which was the site that reposted my original news post without any credit url at all.

"There are a lot of posts and I can't sift through all of them, so we are hoping that members like yourself can help in the effort"

You are right, there are a lot of posts like this and my point was to enforce a credit url for the original source, which would also be easier to enforce to begin with IMO.

It may have been in place for 4-5 years, but my point was that it wasn't working... I was under the impression that Syko already spoke with dusty. I specifically asked him to see what was going on and what we got was just more clarification/ enforcement of the existing rules. I don't think a random user like me has a lot of muscle compared to a mod or site admin, which is why I asked Syko from the start.

Speed-Racer4767d ago (Edited 4767d ago )

"My point is that the credit URL looks like it is the source."

I think this is a problem you have to get over, because pretty much everyone knows the big link is the main story, with the Site B (as Ive called it) becoming the credit link.

"There are a lot of posts like this and my point was to enforce a credit url for the original source, which would be easier to enforce."

Ok. So let's put what happened in the past...in the past. From now on, use the Report function in the Pending section and post it as a Wrong Source if you believe it is wrongly sourced. I take a look at it every day so I will replace the links as the case may be. How about that?

- Edit: Also feel free to PM me if you have a concern.

zmack4767d ago (Edited 4767d ago )

Yes, that seems to be the case. I was just trying to make a suggestion that seemed to work better IMO. I don't wish to continue pushing this anymore. I just wanted to make everyone aware of the problem considering I was initially chastised for trying to use the credit url system compared to other sites not even using it.
