April Contest Details

Another month and yet another opportunity to win some cash money or gift cards!

This month we will be switching it up slightly, dropping the management contest because of the shear number of inaccurate reports. Even though management contests help the flow of stories to the front page, reports are simply not on point and some are blatantly "made up". We'll work on something to correct that and maybe try a management contest in May.

So, with that being said, let's get into April's break down.

-- TOP CONTRIBUTOR CONTEST --

Land yourself in the top two positions on the Contribution board and win up to $90. Note that bonus points will not be considered. Submission restrictions picked up this month will be considered as a DQ and the next contestant in line will win.

1st) $90
2nd) $60

-- TOP COMMENTS CONTEST --

The top "commenter" will pick up a prize. Of course we will be looking for quality as well. Commenting "awesome" or "this is nice" or any lazy comment will land you a DQ unfortunately.

1st) $60
2nd) $40

--BEST COMMENTS CONTEST (with minimum 250 comment points)--

This one will be voted in by Sonic and myself where the user with the most outstanding high quality comments for the month of February will take home $50!

Note that you cannot win both comment contests. It will be either one or the other. We're doing this so that the loot can be spread to as many users as possible.

1) $50

--QUALITY MVP PLAYER--

Ok, this is a somewhat new concept. We are looking for someone who does an overall good job of supporting TechSpy in a contribution and approval rule. This means proper submissions, good management practices and being a community player by adding beneficially to discussions. The winner will be hand selected by Sonic and myself.

There is only once exception here. Even though we are looking at management, we won't consider your tag reports (as this has a been a huge and controversial issue in the last month).

1) $50

A quick note on DQs (disqualifications) - A DQ on submissions will only boot you out of submission contests while a comment DQ will only knock you out of the top comments race.

Speaking of the MVP thingy can we talk about reporting? What to do and specifically what not to do? I made some mistakes last month confusing blog posts with proper sourcing - but lets talk about other things ie multi reporting / gaming the system. I wrote a blog about this on 11x2:

Reports on the Hava sites work this way - first come, first serve. So if I'm the first person to say X story needs this tag, or a submission is incorrectly labeled, that's it. There is no need for other users to parrot this report - verbatim in fact. This is what the agree / disagree function is for - something not to be overlooked.

The same works with marking something as Spam, we dont need four people saying something is spam, just agree with or disagree if need be. Likewise for labeling a story as lame same protocol.

Also something to consider, if Speedracer or Sonicwrecks disagrees with your report, there is a 99 percent chance you reported wrong. Consider retracting it.

(If you go on 11x2 I would recommend finding and reading Stringerbell's blog, it's a good read.)

With regards to the last statement this is definately something some of you should consider. In a lot of instances if there's a report we disagree with, the submission will likely get put through by one of us anyway if that is the only issue. Depending on the situation though we may want you to see it and take the action yourselves.

With reporting generally, yes, frankly we got a bit cheesed off with how reporting was happening last month hence no management contest this month. If we could actually do a management contest without reports counting we'd happily do that.

I do agree with pushing the use of Agree/Disagree, as that IS what it is for. "Parrot posting" where you just, as mentioned above copy the reason for the report verbatim doesn't do anything except show yourself up. To be honest the only time you should see multiple reports is if a) there are multiple different problems, b) there is an additional instance of the same type or c) the second report is from myself or Speed-Racer. Since our reports for things like 'Old' and 'Spam' instantly fail the post, so in those cases it's like a rubberstamp on the post quality being poor enough or irrelevant enough for it to be dismissed. Even then you can like as not expect some additional information.

I suspect we'll have some more guidelines coming through in the future - but yes, for now please be careful with your reporting.

A good example we had one the other month where three people were arguing over multiple (and rather trivial really) reports on a submission - all of whom had failed to note the rather more obvious issue that it was a post from two years ago.
