February Contest Details: All about High Quality

We're into our second month and we're going to do something a bit different. There have always been contests for the top spots, whether it be comments, submissions or management, but they've always turned into a blood bath. This weekend alone, we saw more than 250 submissions on our tiny little website with many of them being mediocre posts, sad to say.

I'm going to switch it up a bit and see how this new contest goes.

--MOST INTERESTING CONTRIBUTION CONTEST (with 10000 points minimum news score submission without bonus score)--

Here is how this works. Sonic and I will look for the most interesting submissions and choose the best two at the end of February. We will consider things like the article quality itself, discussion activity and story heat. This doesn't mean that you should spam posts with 10 comments to make it seem like there is a lot of activity.

1) $100
2) $75

--TOP COMMENTS CONTEST--

Get the top comment spot for February at take home $65!

Anyone can make their way to the top of the comments, but I will be looking for quality replies, not run of the mill stuff like "awesome", "amazing!", "lame"... because that's just being lazy. If your comments are below a certain standard, you will unfortunately be DQed and the prize will be forwarded to the next person in line.

1) $65

--BEST COMMENTS CONTEST (with minimum 250 comment points)--

This one will be voted in by Sonic and myself where the user with the most outstanding high quality comments for the month of February will take home $60!

Note that you cannot with both comment contests. It will be either one or the other. We're doing this so that the loot can be spread to as many users as possible.

1) $60

--TOP MANAGING CONTEST--

Get the top spot in the management contest and win $50. Note that any blatantly wrong reports or approvals will result in a penalty and a DQ.

1) $50

So yes I'm out of this month, which will no doubt please several of you (and I know exactly who, btw) as I'm assisting Speed-Racer with judging. For clarity, as I am tired of people moaning, I am an unpaid mod and can be a part of contests just like the mods in any other part of the network. This is a one-off, so don't get used to it. :P

That's the good news. Now here's the bad.

Whilst I'm not in the contests this month I'm still moderating, and one of the things we're keeping an eye on this month is tags. Some of you have gotten very lazy with tagging and last month was shockingly bad on occasions. It's important you do it right - and if you've actually read the story you're submitting it should be relatively easy to identify the subjects within the piece. So...

- If the story is about Windows you add Windows and Microsoft from a Software developer persepctive.

- If its about A.I. you need to add the Artificial Intelligence tag - which about 6 of you managed to not do this last fortnight alone despite A.I. being in the *actual headline*.

- Be sure to use the subject group tags we use for stories where appropriate. App that helps identify an illness? Add Health. NASA are doing something? Add Space. New technology for teaching kids? Add Education. The US Air Force are designing a new fighter aircraft? Military.

Let's be clear, this is not carte blanche for you to start reporting people left, right and centre for missing minor tags but it is a warning that whilst we've been pretty generous in the past we won't be so much in future. Repeated bad tagging will see you pick up a restriction.

If you take your time and get it right the first time of course there'll be no reports and no worries.

Good luck everyone.

When it comes to anything dealing with management contests mods should be disqualified. Your mod status allows you privileges that normal users do not have nor can they ever get.

High CR rank is there for anyone to obtain, being able to auto approve, auto fail, pull stories back to fix them, those are abilities given and in a contest dealing with management it can only go one way.

For the record I have never had a problem with any mod or any user participating in a contest just so long as we are all on a level playing field and barring management contests that is always the case.

Speed-Racer2992d ago

Self-approving is generally disallowed across all NB BUT I do it sometimes when stories are not moving, but as I am paid staff member, I am auto-DQed from all contests.

However if Sonic were to enter, he would receive a DQ for auto approving his own stories, and there are easy ways of checking for that. Even regular members can check.

Auto failing affects story submission contests more that management only. If you reported a story vs a mod, the point count would still be the same. However, if stories were auto failed in submission contests and the mod was not right to fail it (e.g. not a good enough reason), then there would be a conflict of interest.

Pulling back stories generally isn't something you see but it happens from time to time when approvals are few and far apart. However in management months, we avoid it.

There really isn't a conflict once the mod is responsible with his powers.

Stringerbell2992d ago (Edited 2992d ago )

I dont mean auto approval of own stories - If I approve a story its 3 votes to the 5 before the 24 hr mark. I share the management points with other users who will potentially give the story its last votes.

As a mod If I were to approve someone else's story, its approved immediately and no one else gets to share in the process. In no way is that fair for a contest were the highest management score wins as its an ability no one else has.

Speed-Racer2992d ago

If that were the case, I'd kick everyone back down to 1 approval point if we wanted to be really fair about it.

Stringerbell2992d ago

But the status quo already is fair, all normal users cap at an approval rate of 3 votes for stories, we all end at the same number ie 1. To go above 3 votes is impossible, it can only be given to you.

Everyone else plays by one set of rules, to be given a leg up, an advantage no one else can ever get, well I dont think its whining when discussing the issue of fairness.

Blogs, news submissions, comment contests etc have at it thats all fair game - but in this case admins have special privileges which will guarantee they win a management contest. That is my point. If thats cool, I wont harp on it, but I'm not coming out of left field with this.

Speed-Racer2992d ago (Edited 2992d ago )

I'm pretty confused as to what exactly you're arguing. If 2 3-vote members approved a story, then it removes the odds of 3 other members getting points vs 5 1-vote members each potentially getting points if they choose to approve a story.

Also management points are earned by reports as well, so it wouldn't really be fair to say it's all down to an approval game. Mods generally are advised to hold back and let regular contributors do the job so as to create a sustainable environment. Sure sonic could take on a competitive role, but approving isn't the only way of clocking points towards the contest.

Stringerbell2992d ago

As a mod if you are the first one to get to a story and approve it, thats it, the story is approved. No one else is able to share in the approval process and in a management contest that is a huge advantage to have.

Right now I approved some stories and they are still pending for others to approve as well. That was my point. How can a mod compete in such a contest like that when they have an ability no one else has one that give them the edge? Again if its cool, then it is what it is.

Speed-Racer2992d ago

I see your point BUT I refer to my point of disproportionate approval points. If you're going to make that argument, then the approving power of everyone should be equal no matter their rank (i.e. everyone should be relegated to 1 approval point).

If you and someone else with 3 or even 2 vote points worked in tandem to approve stories, many other users would be left out of the game as well because you two would be gobbling up the story approvals.
