CES 2014: The year of the bendable TVs (Day 1)

CES is back again and this year's most prominent feature isn't 4K televisions so much, but more bendable TVs! Yes 4K is still a think but with the push for even larger displays, various manufacturers are looking at improving the cinematic experience. They believe that bending the TVs could give us an even greater feeling that we're actually in the movie or show when watch it.

On Monday, Samsung officially announced its 105 inch Ultra High Definition bendable TVs along with a smaller 85 inch UHD model which both go on sale during the middle of this year. Even though Samsung wasn't the old manufacturer to display curved TVs at the convention, they were not going to be one-upped by LG and decided to go even bigger. The 105 inch model has a display resolution of 5,120 x 2,160 pixels and is LCD based with LED back lighting. They haven't given any price estimates either, so we just have to wait until later this year to see something.

LG obviously came back with a competing product, also offering a 105 inch bendable UHD displaying video at a 5,120 x 2,160 screen resolution. Pixel-wise, both manufacturers are offering a product capable of displaying content at 5K but so far only LG has came outright saying that their product is 5K worthy even though Samsung's equivalent also boasts the same specs. Either Samsung didn't do their research when they announced their product as being "the first" or they wanted to be the first at CES to announce it. I'll not even bother to try and understand what they mean.

Samsung seemed less focused on cellphones this year but more focused on tablets, wearable gear, photography, and car accessories. I was able to try out their Galaxy NotePro, Note3, and Galaxy Camera 3G models. There was also a range of more professional DSLR cameras and a wide assortment of attachable lenses on display.

Over at Sony's booth, the much talked about Xperia Z1 Compact was also on display. This new model is set to take on competing models like the iPhone 5S and Galaxy S4. It features Android 4.3, a 20 MP camera module with Sony G Lens set, a 720p display and a 2.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor. Of course it can also take a dip in the water without getting damaged.

GoPro also showed up to CES, not so much to show off its awesome HD mountable 'pretty much anywhere' cameras, but one of its partners Tiffen was on site to display their SteadyCam Curve products for the GoPro Hero series. Essentially the SteadyCam allows you to mount your GoPro to a base and then hold it for even more steady shots, whether it be of yourself or to reach places that may be just out of reach. The GoPro sits on a stabilizing base that allows the camera to remain level even if the person holding it isn't exactly at a steady position.

Among a ton of other cool products, LG's reboot of webOS seemed to be the most interesting to me. Originally developed my HP, LG has put some serious thought into the OS and wants to put it as the basis on a potentially new smart TV platform. We're not sure if they want to use webOS for a wider range of devices (should Android ever fail) but what they've presented so far appears to be a very simple to use and snappy system. I hope to see more development in this arena. I'm an Android user and I admit the interface is getting a bit boring and with nothing really to talk about (other than the UI of Windows Phone), it would be great to see another mobile OS on the market for once.

That's it for Day 1. Obviously there was much more content but a lot of it was a rehash of last year's CES and products that were already on the market. Stay tuned to Day 2 where I get down and dirty with tech related to the future's transportation.
