Is The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Worth $60?

Nintendo is remaking The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening for the Nintendo Switch, which is fantastic, but is it worth $60 as a full priced title?

FallenAngel19841888d ago (Edited 1888d ago )

Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Ratchet & Clank ‘16, Shadow of the Colossus ‘18, Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy, Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled & Yakuza Kiwami 1&2 say Nintendo has no business selling this remake at full price

TheEspiownage1888d ago

I like the amiibo theory, as it's similar to when Twilight Princess released on the Wii U with the Wolf Link amiibo. Other than that though, I'm stumped as to what could justify this price.

_SilverHawk_1887d ago

The better question should be are a lot of Nintendo games worth full asking price? A lot of switch games or Nintendo games in general are overpriced.

telekineticmantis1887d ago

I hate Twilight Princess so much.

-Foxtrot1887d ago

The Wolf Amiibo that locked a few things behind it...

The 10th Rider1887d ago

Price is determined by demand. More people will buy a Link's Awakening remake at $60 than would buy something like the Shadow of the Colossus remake, even if SOTC remade was $20.

Kinda sucks, but they are priced higher because tons of people want them and will gladly pay $60 for them. I was fine with Wind Waker, as I felt the improvements were worth it, but then there's ones like Twilight Princess which felt more like an HD texture pack. I guess we'll see what sort of added features Link's Awakening gets, if any.

AnthonyDavis1886d ago

Ehhhhh Nintendo can charge $60 for LEGO Zelda

IMissJimRyan1887d ago

It's just business. Nintendo fans will buy any game of the Nintendo big franchises for $60. Even if it's a re-release.

Dk TF, NSMBU are exemples.

If they buy it, why cut the price?

Concertoine1887d ago

I’d like to point out that DKCTF actually launched on Wii U for 49.99, so they were willing to pay more than that game cost when it was new 5 years ago

DwightSchrute011886d ago

You pay for quality. You will never get a Ferrari or Lamborghini for the price of a mini or a metro.
Nintendo makes the best and highest rated games that are in popular demand.
You get what you pay for.

DanteVFenris6661886d ago

Dktf is also the best platformer of all time.

nommers1886d ago

@DwightSchrute01

They make some very overrated games given that games have long gone past the point where you can have a great story and great gameplay. Nintendo can only produce half of a full game experience so they’re definitely not worth their ratings or price now. True you don’t NEED a story to enjoy a game, but im talking about the value of said game to satisfy as many tastes of a range of gamers as possible. Some of the studios under them may have a panache for this, but even then it’s been questionable.

SR3881886d ago

Not really true is it? Lol

I don't buy all Ninty games at that price, last one I bought was the smash ultimate collectors edition that was £90 and I got lots with it.

I wouldn't pay £40 for LA unless it came with an amiibo... I have got some GAME points i could use for it so I'd get it on release for like £25

WilliamSheridan1887d ago

It's worth $60, but only because that's the MSRP.

All kidding aside, it should be cheaper... If anything, since it's a remaster

Hroach6161887d ago (Edited 1887d ago )

Actually it’s a Remake. Not a remaster.
Remaster are just going in to pretty up visuals and tighten up some gameplay elements.

Remakes are built brand new from the ground up. All new assets and code for everything. They just happen to be following a story or setting previously done. Still requires just as much time and effort as making a brand new game.
So yeah I think it will be worth full price. Just my opinion.

ziggurcat1887d ago

doesn't seem like a remaster to me - I would consider this a remake.

bloop1887d ago

"Remaster are just going in to pretty up visuals and tighten up some gameplay elements"

But this is technically the same game, only made prettier in 2.5d with some tightened up gameplay elements?

ziggurcat1887d ago

@bloop:

it's a remake because it's not using any of the same assets from the original game. a remaster typically takes the same assets, and ups the resolution on them.

MrSec841886d ago

It's a remake, since it's got new gameplay mechanics, assets, audio, lighting and a full on new engine to make it all run.

This is basically inspired by the original, with modernized features.

It's about as close to a new game as you can get.

NecrumOddBoy1887d ago (Edited 1887d ago )

RE2 is $60. These both are full remakes (NOT remasters) and I think after 25 years it's justified to a degree. Let's see what extra content is in it. I do agree re-released Nintendo games notoriously overpriced though. Wii U ports to Switch still at $60 is a slap in the face.

Teflon021887d ago

The type of game it is alone says it shouldn't be. A top down game couldn't survive at $60 these days. Ratchet was a reimagining, not even a remake and it was $40. Crash was 3 remakes and still wasn't full price etc. People need to stop trying to justify bad pricing by Nintendo. I skipped basically every port this year because of it

wonderfulmonkeyman1886d ago

@tef
"The type of game it is alone says it shouldn't be."
Pfft, no it doesn't.
By that crazy logic, I could go and say that the Resi 2 remake shouldn't have been full price because its over-the-shoulder style emulated the unpopular Resi 5.

It being top-down has no bearing on whether or not it deserves to be a full-priced remake.
If this were just a port of one of the original two then I'd agree on a lower price being needed, but this isn't a port.

1887d ago
LilTallBoy1887d ago

Was Halo: The Master Chief Collection not $60?

TK-551887d ago

Will it sell? If the answer is yes then Nintendo set the right price.

"Nintendo has no business selling this remake at full price"

I think this is more of a case where Nintendo isn't charging an outrageous price but that other studios have not had the confidence to sell for a higher price. SotC could easily have sold for a higher price but for whatever reason Sony valued it lower. It sucks for Nintendo remakes but it is what it is.

SuperSonic911887d ago (Edited 1887d ago )

Overpriced hardware
Overpriced software
Overrated company

I know how Nintendo makes mony of kiddie toy games but parents need to wise up and stick it to them.
This needs to stop.
Nintendo fans ovarrates Nintendo products at the expense of many unpopular developers publishers and games.

This why more people flock to PS4 and mobile games outgrowing Nintendo because of more affordable pricing.

And this is why Nintendos hardware sales have been shrinking market share.
They are so tight fisted and make traditional gaming less appealing to many.

Shadow of the Colossus Remake one of the GOAT games was $40. Same with Crash Trilogy's 3 games in one.

What a pity.

The 10th Rider1887d ago

Nintendo has had a growing market share ever since the Switch launched, lol.

Critic4l_Strik31887d ago (Edited 1887d ago )

@SuperSonic91
Shrinking market? what the hell are you talking about? Their market share has been going up since the Switch launched, going from 9 to 22 percent increase (2017) and it keeps going up

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/0...

https://www.cnet.com/news/n...

You do realize that phones usually cost twice as much as a switch right? True, games are most likely free to play, but you cant compare a mobile phone game quality to a Nintendo game quality. I do agree with you that some games are overpriced for being remasters/re-releases/old ports

neutralgamer19921886d ago

Nintendo charged $60 for a box you better believe every game they sell will be full priced

Gamers and media hold Nintendo to a kiddy standard yet hold Sony and ms to a mature big boy table standard

wonderfulmonkeyman1886d ago

Resident Evil 2 says otherwise, and if I cared enough then I'm sure I could cherry-pick a bunch of other examples just like you have.

It's a remake that's been a long time coming, new assets and surely new surprises will be added in.
Its been long enough since the originals released that a new version should be forgiven a new-game price, just like Resi 2, because for many it WILL be a new game.

Now if it were just a straight port of the original or DX version, I'd agree with you, but it's obviously not a mere port.

jaycptza1886d ago

CTR is not full price neither was Crash Bandicoot NST. So eff off

It’s one thing to price all of your games at full price, it’s another to keep said games at full price for many long years after their release

What’s worse is that many people actually vehemently defend such practices

Neonridr1888d ago

nah, I wish they put more titles to the Nintendo Selects line. But I can understand it from a business perspective. Every Switch owner is going to buy Mario Odyssey, BOTW, Smash.. so why discount the titles when they could make so much more money from them?

badz1491887d ago (Edited 1887d ago )

yup...bunch of suckers! I would monetize them too

Ricegum1886d ago (Edited 1886d ago )

And no one buys other big games on various other platforms? Nintendo could easily make as much by reducing the cost.

PhoenixUp1887d ago

It especially sucks in comparison to Sony who also has a lot of high selling games yet they frequently drop the price on them

Nintendo even keeps its non-blockbuster titles at full price for years just because it can.

Nintentional1886d ago

Sony drops the price on their exclusives frequently, because their brands are nowhere even close as big as Nintendo IP. Sony wishes they had franchises big enough to be sold full price years after release while still selling. You don’t think Sony, or any company would do that if they could??

pcz1886d ago

Why would you drop the price of something selling incredibly well? Of course the games gold their value because they are always sought after.

And besides, Nintendo do have a discounted reprint of their highest sellers. They have done that for generations. Remember?

PhoenixUp1886d ago

@ Nint

Uncharted 4, Horizon: Zero Dawn, God of War 4, & Spider-Man sold over 10 million yet they still dropped in price despite selling extremely well.

@ pcz

GTAV is one of the best selling games of all time with it still ranking high on monthly sales charts yet it dropped in price. Plenty of other games hold their value and are sought after, yet they also drop in price.

Nintendo titles take a long time nowadays to join the budget range. Other publishers don’t even always put their great selling games at a budget price for it to drop in price. For example Monster Hunter: World is Capcom’s best selling game yet it costs $10 less to get on digital stores than it did last year.

Imalwaysright1886d ago

Nintendo can keep them at full price because there is demand for them long after they were released. As for Sony games, after the initial "sales rush" their sales start dwindling so Sony drops their price to increase demand. This is business 101. You don't drop the price of any product or service if there is demand for them and you would do the same if you had a business.

PhoenixUp1886d ago

@ imal

There is not high demand for every Nintendo published game though. How do you account for games without strong sales legs yet are still being sold for full price?

GTAV for example still ranks high in so many monthly charts yet it’s not being sold for full price anymore. How do you account for that and other non-Nintendo games that have strong legs as well?

Apparently Nintendo is too special for even your own justification for why all their games should be overpriced to make complete sense.

It’s not only Sony that does this practice. You see games from other publishers as well that sell well a long time after they release yet they still have a dropped price after a year or two.

Sony games are frontloaded it do not matter how well received the games are, look at horizon in 4 weeks it drop to 40, it’s not because the game bad because most of its sales came from the first two weeks and then Sony sales for first party sales drop off........:they have no legs so Sony end up adding it to a bundle look at the last of us that was bundle with the ps4 in the beginning you really think half of those sales came from people picking it up??? It’s from the bundles

Nintendo games have legs sell less in first week vs a Sony game but outsells it over time

Dragon quest builder 2 a good example it outsold switch in Japan in the first week but after 3 weeks switch version pass the ps4 version and now have a big lead

Same with fifa 18 ps4 had a big lead it took switch until December to pass the ps4 sales

I use Japan as reference but it’s same every where else it’s just that Japan show actual numbers while NPD and UK charts show where a game places on the chart

yomfweeee1887d ago

Nintendo games are only selling sow ell this gen because there isn't much else to buy since it lacks the big games from third parties.

Thats why Zelda has sold more than the previous 2 games combined (console versions). That's why Zelda literally was selling 1 to 1 compared to the co sole at the beginning. That shell of a game was overhyped and you fanboys ate it up.

King_Noctis1887d ago

@yomfweee

Based on your logic then why didn’t more people buy Zelda when it was on the Wii U/3DS, since both got much less support from big third parties than the Switch?

Knushwood Butt1887d ago

Dragon Quest Builder 2 has a 10K lead on retail alone.

Data proves thst PS4 digital sales are higher than Nintendo digital sales.

Digital + Retail = PS4 total sales higher than Switch.

SuperSonic911887d ago

Nintendo abuse their loyal fanbase who wants to be abused.

Nintendo is selling compact cars like luxury sports cars!
Freakin sad.

This is why their market share has shrunk in contrast to mobile gaming which has grown many many times bigger than traditional handheld gaming and PSN a digital storefront with flash sales that makes more than Nintendo and Xbox division combined.

pcz1886d ago

Nintendo is a business not a charity

PhoenixUp1886d ago

@ Gemmol

As usual here’s another person justifying the full price decision. While Sony frequently hosts significant weekly sales and flash sales on PSN which really contributes in it making more revenue than Nintendo as a whole and the entire Xbox division, I’ll just continue continue laughing at people who justify buying a game for $60 while I could easily spend that $60 to get 2-4 games.

@ Super

Yeah it’s strange to see people who actually enjoy paying full price for all their games.

@ pcz

And business wise PSN makes more revenue than Nintendo as a whole, so what’s your point?

Gemmol1886d ago (Edited 1886d ago )

Revenue not the same thing as profit, people can make a lot of revenue and still not turn a profit.......Nintendo made more profit last year than Sony And Xbox if you had read that article all the way you would of seen in the Sony most revenue for the year that Nintendo made the most profit don’t just read a title

Nintendo make these profits from same games that you say should go on sale why put it on sale if it have demand

You keep missing my point Sony games lose demand so they are force to drop the price because all the sales come from the first two weeks from it being front loaded

Nintendo legs is crazy

If Sony games never lost demand they would be same price as Nintendo games.......Nintendo have 4 games above 10 million and it didn’t even make a full 2 years yet......demand for those games are not slowing down

PhoenixUp1886d ago (Edited 1886d ago )

Even if you want to look at Nintendo’s top selling games, not every game justifies the full price.

Titles such as Bayonetta 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Pokken Tournament DX, Mario + Rabbids, ARMS, & Captain Toad that most certainly do not have strong sales legs to this day are still being sold for full cost. DKC: TF is especially jarring since it’s being sold for more than the original price despite not offering enough additional content to justify it.

Sony titles do have sales legs, as evidenced by sales charts Sony gives out monthly from PSN top downloads lists & other sources as well. Thing is that obviously not every Sony title will have strong sales legs but conversely not every Nintendo game will not have strong legs either.

Say for example that even if Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 doesn’t sell much as Spider-Man, it will most certainly remain at that $60 for years to come. Nintendo will habitually keep even games with relatively average sales at high price as opposed to other publishers with titles that sell even more naturally dropping the cost at some point. Whether the game has high or low demand Nintendo keeps the high price which is jarring since a hybrid system should accommodate for a more flexible pricing arrangement

Gemmol1883d ago

Dude until Nintendo bundle Marvel the way Sony did Spider-Man in the holiday bundles that sold really welll there’s no way you can compare the sales........bundle Spider-Man most likely half of its sales

My prediction it sold 4 to 5 million physical before all the deals to get it

PhoenixUp1883d ago

It was just a hypothetical conjecture. What I’m saying is that even if Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 sells less than Spider-Man, Nintendo would still keep the same full price for it years after its release.

Maybe it's in some type of special boxing with anniversary art/poster inside, the physical game with a gold cartridge....

The 10th Rider1887d ago

Yeah, we've had one trailer. Obviously it would be awesome if it was cheaper, but I don't think we can really judge the value until we have a chance to see what it's actually offering.

Neonridr1888d ago

I mean the listing doesn't mean the price is set in stone. Let's wait for the official pages to go up before we instantly cry foul. It's definitely a little pricey, although if it is going to cost that much then maybe it will come bundled with some goodies.

TheEspiownage1887d ago

Well even if it is a placeholder (Best Buy usually doesn’t do placeholder pricing), the question still stands if the game is worth $60.

Neonridr1887d ago

game on its own, probably not. If it comes with stuff.. perhaps. Maybe a link amiibo using this art style?

The 7 Best Video Game Trailers of All Time

There's been a lot of great video game trailers over the years, but here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best produced so far.

-Foxtrot205d ago

I never even knew this existed, I love him, he was fantastic

Just a shame that he passed away, I always wanted to see if they did one more Bottom live when they were older to send the characters off if he was still alive. I'd have loved to go and see it.

CantThinkOfAUsername203d ago

@LordoftheCritics that's my kind of list! I'd only add Halo Wars 2 and For Honor.

Rocketisleague203d ago

Versus Xiii original trailer, I was literally a kid back then. Shame it was quite disappointing on release

-Foxtrot204d ago

Assassins Creed Brotherhood and Revelation had some great cinematic trailers, the latter using Woodkids Iron. Even Assassin Creed Unity had a trailer when they used another Woodkid song which was decent.

Tomb Raider Underworld had a really good reveal trailer showing Croft Manor in ruins but showed it in reverse.

The Last of Us Part II reveal with Ellie singing Through the Valley and also the TV Sport where she sang a cover of True Faith.

The Witcher 3s A Night to Remember trailer which they basically turned into the games Epilogue set after the Blood and Wine expansion. He told Orianna he'd come back for her and he did.

Halo 3 Starry Night. Short but effective.

The Callisto Protocol launch trailer. The game might not be amazing but the launch trailer was well done and the theme song to the game "Lost Again" by Kings Elliot was beautiful

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, great trailer and really gave off that mystery, conspiracy vibe

Uncharted 4 Man Behind the Treasure

Deathloop Launch trailer with Pitch Black and the official gameplay trailer with Déjà Vu, two great songs made for the game.

isarai204d ago

Never even played the game but AC Revelations CGI trailer I saved in my PS3 and would rewatch on a regular basis, and used it as a reference for calibrating TVs when I bought them

Grand Theft Auto Vice City back in the day, The Uncharted series trailers have been awesome (always get me hyped), Grand Theft Auto 5, Breath Of The Wild reveal trailer, Team ICO trailers have heart and Ghost Of Tsushima reveal made my jaw drop....to name only a small few.

TheEnigma313204d ago

Gears 1 and gears 3 are the top for me. I would throw dante's inferno in there for the song

Hofstaderman203d ago

Mass Effect 3 trailer featuring the battle. Enough said. That and Assassins Creed 3 cinematic trailer was great too.
