Sony wins E3. Again. Barely

The Japanese game giant, which has sold more hardware than anyone else this generation, wowed E3 audiences with a parade of enviable exclusives

It's kind of subjective personally I think there were no winners

NewMonday2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

subjectively Sony won because the PS4 exclusives generated the most interest, they were the most watched and discussed positively. they showed the PS4 still has the most to offer in 2018/2019.

presentation was a fail though but nobody cares about that.

AngelicIceDiamond2138d ago

If nobody cared about presentation then massive majority of gaming sites would say Sony won hands down. But it doesn't seem to be the case.

If very polarizing between Sony and MS.

AspiringProGenji2138d ago

if i didn't have a PS4 I would have rushed to get one. Spiderman alone is a seller. Sony conference may have sucked but they still made it clear that they still got more big guns to make the PS4 still the most attractive console. Sony is still delivering in this gen instead of talking about the PS5 or the future. That's how it should be. For those who want to act cool and accused anyone of loyalty, at least Sony earns the loyalty they get despite them not being perfect.

MuddyWaters2138d ago

Who outside of Sony's most inner circle actually thought Sony won E3? Those who have supported the Ps4 this entire generation will be the main one's who say Sony won this E3.

WickedLester2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

@MuddyWaters

Those who care more about content than presentation. After all, we don't play presentation. We play games and the games are what made Sony stand out.

Besides, the negative backlash over Sony's conference is so overblown. Yes the intermission after The Last of Us Part 2 was awkward and killed momentum. However after that, it was just like last year's presentation. Very little talking and game after game. At the end of the day that's all that matters. Style points for presentation carries absolutely no weight beyond the chatter while E3 is happening. Yes, Sony could've padded their presentation like MS did by showing a bunch of multi-console titles that everyone already knew about and Shawn Layden could've monologued a lot longer, talking about Sony's dedication to gaming, the way Phil Spencer did. However we as PS4 owners don't have to be told that. Sony has exemplified it for 4 straight generations.

TFJWM2138d ago

@MuddyWaters *Who outside of MS's most inner circle actually thought MS won E3? Those who have supported the Xbox One this entire generation will be the main one's who say MS won this E3.

bluefox7552138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

I mean, presentation is a great metric of success for non-gamers. For the rest of us, the important part was the games, or at least it should be. There were numerous moments during Sony's gameplay footage where any gamer would say: "Wow, that was epic.", there weren't really any moments like that in MS's conference.

MuddyWaters2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

WickedLester, as a show Sony was flat. I have a PS4 and while I look forward to all of those games to me Sony is coming across as very cocky. They just didn't put much effort into E3. There is more talk about the whole Fortnite controversy going on than their E3 show and their response to that is also showing tons of arrogance.

"Who outside of MS's most inner circle actually thought MS won E3?"

Nintendo fans are also more likely to see just how much better Microsoft's E3 was. You also have gaming sites who say the same thing about Sony's odd show. Remove the most loyal fans and it becomes a little clearer that Sony did not have a great E3.

Skull5212138d ago

PS4 has double the install base yet Microsoft had the most watched conference says Microsoft won. I watched them both and that was clearly the case, Sony had some good games but was lackluster overall, hardly anything new or hardware/feature news.

TheKingKratos2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

Let me make it very simple
Sony won the gamers heart with the flood of amazing ps4 exclusives
but lost the gaming press with their presentation.

While Microsoft won the gaming press with their presentation but lost to sony in what matters the most by showing multiplat games that will be playable on ps4 and the same old gears/halo/forza with nothing new

raztad2138d ago

The flow of the presentation was wrong. I am starting to think Naughty Dog is to blame. Sony (or ND) gave TLUS P.2 special treatment above any other first party exclusive. They went as far as having a stage just for it and then people had to be moved to a new place for the rest of the presentation. It was stupid.

OffRoadKing2138d ago

Nobody should care about unfortunately somewhere along the way its become just as much if not more about presentation then the games themselves. I have a feeling that if Microsoft would have had yet another bad presentation at this years E3 then presentation wouldn't have mattered.

pinkcrocodile752138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

@Aspiring "Sony is still delivering in this gen instead of talking about the PS5 or the future"

You seem to have a short memory, Shawn Layden started the chatter last year, that has kept going all year, that PS5 was coming... just not now.

That's exactly what Phil Spencer did. All other details for Scarlet was gleaned from a leaked document which didn't come from Phil.

So don't slap Phil for doing exactly what Shawn did last year.

As for the confs, Xbox was the best conference hands down and the best already known exclusives cam from Sony... well except for Cyberpunk 2077 which is the bollocks in my view.

I'll tell you though I have re-watched the Forza Horizon 4 footage countless times since last Sunday, I didn't think I'd be as excited about it for this year but I am now that I know it's set in Great Britain and has Seasons that affect gameplay.

So this year for me, it's Spiderman, Forza Horizon 4 and Assassins Creed Odyssey.

Edit: Oh and Just Cause 4!

Subzero100x2138d ago

"presentation was a fail though but nobody cares about that."

That's because these degenerates that make posts saying Microsoft won know the games are what really matters, and sony destroyed the competition with one or two games alone.

Zeref2138d ago

except they were not the most watched. They were third. Xbox had the most viewers. Then Ubisoft, then Sony.

TheCommentator2138d ago

New Monday said, "Sony won because the PS4 exclusives generated the most interest, they were the most watched and discussed positively." LOL. You guys really do live in the world of make.believe, don't you?

For those of us not indoctrinated by The Church of Sony, here's the truth: Xbox E3 2018 Presser Highest Watched Twitch Stream Ever
Source: https://gamerant.com/xbox-m...

So Xbox generated the most interest and was most watched, and the only reason Sony games are discussed more positively is because people like you $#!+ in every Xbox-related article you come across. The delusion is real... but that's about it.

Mr Lahey2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

@TheCommentator

I watched the MS conference and I would never buy an XBOX. I knew lots of multiplats that I can play on my PS4 were gonna be shown and it was the first big E3 conference.

Sure they won with most views but that says nothing really. It's the content that counts.

BTW you seem really upset talking about indoctrination and shit like that. Most gamers prefer PlayStation and it shows you have a hard time accepting that.

NewMonday2138d ago

@TheCommentator

PlayStation official E3 YT views over 2 million
Xbox official E3 YT views around just 800K

also the YT views of exclusives:

Last of Us 2 : 6.6m
Ghost of Tsushima : 3.5m
Death Stranding : 3m
Halo Infinite : 2.9m

hold the L

TFJWM2138d ago

@TheCommentator Yes MS won twitch 1.7million to 1.5 but Sony won facebook 2.2 million to 821k on their official channels. Sony also had 80 or so theaters sell out with hundreds of people waiting to get in. Also pretty much all 3rd party streams have Sony ahead.

JackBNimble2138d ago

I thought the whole point to E3 is to show what you got coming up.
Sony showed exclusive games while MS showed multiplatform games.
Just that alone should have easily made Sony the winner.

What the hell does presentation matter if you're showing off multiplats?
Easy win.

Skull5212138d ago

Sony showed off 4 games we already knew about and that was their conference. It was bad, almost 2006 bad.
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

wonderfulmonkeyman2138d ago

Technically it was the tournaments that were the most watched, and that generated the most long-term interest.
By that logic, it was Nintendo that won.

But if we're going solely by conference, then I'd give it to Microsoft over Sony and Nintendo, Smash aside.

PUBG2138d ago

Let me settle this once and for all for everyone concerned......Microsoft won, and they won big, so let's just all calm down and go play some games.

Bathyj2138d ago

Presentation does matter to some. If it were content only Microsoft wouldn't even be in the conversation.

Personally I forgive the presentation missteps when your bringing the games so comprehensively. And frankly I'm a little disgusted in the gaming media that they can be so easily distracted by style and pizzazz with little substance to back it up from one company and so easily downgrade another's conference because the stage show wasn't up to its usual standard but the games were on point.

Don't believe me? After the dust settled on the conference themselves what games are being discussed the most? Not Halo, Gears or Forza I can tell you that.

bigmalky2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

Well, if you consider Sony have actually delivered the majority of titles they have announced at every E3, along with a few other promises, while MS have promised and promised and under delivered each year...

Sony won by a mile.

MS, third party games coming to other platforms, the usual suspects and thin air on exclusives that may or may not be cancelled/barebones/lies.

Presentation = nothing, until something is actually produced.

mozzie2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

The most generated interest? Google Trends begs to differ:

UK https://twitter.com/GoogleT...
US https://twitter.com/GoogleT...

AmUnRa2137d ago

This, when some people say Microsoft "won" because of the better format i give them that.
But they forget that not the format, but the GAMES are 100% more important than the format.
The format from Sony was not good, but they killed it by showing gameplay of games. So Sony "won" this E3.

agnosticgamer2137d ago

According to twitch though... MS had the most watched E3 conference that topped out at 1.7 million viewers... Who "wins" E3 is purely subjective... That is why "who wins" E3 articles are always opinion based articles... True winners of E3 are Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo fans that see what games/hardware/features are on the horizon.

Microsoft won because they did what they supposed to.

New games announced. (I don´t care if it was Halo, Gears and Forza! Those games are new, and all of them is bringing something new for their franchize.) Plus, Battletoads.

5 New first party studios. FIVE! Everybody was complaining about Microsoft´s lack of investment in that area. Phil Spencer promissed new studio acquisitions short after he got promoted and he delivered despite haters saying that he was lying.

New AAA games on Game Pass included AAA first party games.

Next gen Xbox consoles confirmed!

Sony only show gameplay videos for their already announced exclusives and some third party tittles.

No new exclusives announcements.

Aside from that From Software´s game, Sony pretty much abandoned PSVR.

No news for PS Now and PSN Plus subscribers.

Though the gameplay videos does look amazing as expected, one can only wonder if in-depth/deep dive are the new buzzwords for gameplay videos. Yeah, i was expecting actual devs talking about those games in details which didn´t happen. We know the games are comming, but no release dates for most of those games either.

Shawn Layden pretty much leaked everything himself. He left people wondering wether we would see or hear about new exclusive games for PS4 and turn out that there was no suprises or whatsoever.

I personally think that Sony played their cards too soon and now they´re running out of exclusives. They still have three conferences this year, and aside from PS5 and PS5 games, i don´t know what is there to talk about regarding exclusive games for the PS4.

Profchaos2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

Didn't you copy and paste this from a previous coment on a article?

CaptainOmega2138d ago

-----Of course you don't care that you are getting the same games year after year. And BT was just an announcement, albeit it wasn't that big of a surprise. Didn't make me think 'wow, I need to run out and buy and Xbox for it'.

----- 5 Studios is an impressive number. But these moves should have been made YEARS ago. Undead and Playground were already making games for Xbox.. so in reality only 3 studios were added to the roster. Also, you don't get an A on your homework for turning it in late. All this tells me is wait till sometime next generation for the games. (and that's if they are even good),

----- Game Pass is a good value for people who don't want to go out and buy their games. I personally like owning them. And a next gen Xbox isn't that big of a surprise. We all new it was coming. Just like we all know PS5 is coming.

-----Those gameplay videos stole the show. MS only showed an exclusive gameplay video of Horizon 4, and honestly while the changing seasons was nice, it looked like just another Horizon game. Yoshida said they still have unannounced exclusives. I bet they are waiting for TSG or PSX to announce them. There are plenty of VR games to play, they were highlighted in the intermission. I don't understand what news we wanted for PS NOW and PS Plus??? I know PS Plus members could download Black Ops 3 for free.

-----I don't want to hear anything from you regarding 'buzz words'. Devs talked about the games during E3. We know the games are coming in 2019 and 2020, at this point announcing a release date just for the satisfaction to say there is a release date isn't smart, considering the history of games this gen needing to be delayed. It was a smart move. The release dates will be revealed when they are ready. YUP. Shawn told us what to expect. Why are you acting surprised that we didn't get what we were told we were going to get??Yoshida said there are still unannounced PS4 exclusives. You need to tamper your 'concern'.

Here's the difference between the two conferences. One platform has me excited for the remainder of the generation with top notch games.. while the other is telling me to wait till next generation for the games. That's all i need to know in regards to 'who won E3'.

Rude-ro2138d ago

“I personally think that Sony played their hand too soon and now they’re running out of exclusives”

In a comment talking about a company that has not released one single new AAA IP this gen and reaching back into last gen...
Sony played their hands too soon?
And Microsoft’s own position is so bad they they had tease one of their cookie cutter franchises to fluff their “exclusive” presence.
Good god no wonder Microsoft prints off consoles this gen more than games...

Ceaser98573612138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

Well Well what leaks are you talking about? Every PS4 gamers , gaming journalism knew PS4 will show the exclusives which were announced earlier... and Sony didn't play their exclusive cards to soon. Sony played it perfectly which MS failed at Every level. Hence the large user base and hence PS4 is successful then Xbox.. PS4 still have unannounced games.
MS has a wonderful E3 for the first time. But Sony had the games..

AspiringProGenji2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

You said Sony played their cards too early yet MS struggles to release a fair amount of exclusives this gen and are talking about next gen

Haha you xbox fans are funny

Razzer2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

"I personally think that Sony played their cards too soon and now they´re running out of exclusives."

lol....you act like once Sony delivers what has been announced then that is it. No more exclusives! Sony "ran out". You think all Sony's studios are sitting idle? Nope. Sony didn't need to buy studios to deliver games years down the road like Microsoft. They were never in that situation to begin with. The exclusives will continue. Rest assured, Sony did not "run out". Fact is Sony has been delivering while MS has been stagnant. Sony fans can look to the last two years or so and the coming years and see quality exclusives in either direction. MS fans.....not so much. So Sony could have put on a better show, but MS has a long way to go in actually delivering games in a pipeline like Sony.

Godmars2902138d ago

MS did what they have always done: try to sell the Xbox on potential rather than actual results. Hogging and Bogarting every 3rd party trailer they can, suggesting they're exclusive, as much as they can.

OffRoadKing2138d ago

Show gameplay! Show gameplay! Show gameplay!

"Sony only show gameplay videos"

LOL! Man the xbox fanboys are moving those goal posts fast.

And please dont talk about buzzwords, Microsoft invented buzzwords, "Console Launch Exclusive", "Engagement".

I personally think you're salty and jealous AF.

Subzero100x2138d ago

Dude trailers don't win nothing game play does sony delivered on that front, and multiplats don't count as exclusives lol

zeuanimals2138d ago

“I personally think that Sony played their hand too soon and now they’re running out of exclusives”

Yo... Microsoft literally announced studio acquisitions and the creation of a new studio without even showing games. That's the epitome of playing your cards too early.

The Intitiative was apparently just formed not too long ago and it hasn't even assembled a dev team yet. I've never seen something like that done at a trade show. People complained that Sony showed games too early, atleast they're games and we know there's something concrete that will release at some point. There's no telling how long we'll be waiting for these new Xbox exclusives.

I don't have the time or patience to go over every wrong statement you made, but ill point out a few.
dios right after Mattrick? Wasn't he in a prominent enough position years ago to make it happen? I understand he received some special promotion in 2017, but why did it take so long under his leadership? The generation will be over before the actual new studios produce exclusives. Playground and Undead had deals with Microsoft anyway, some people actually thought Undead was already first party. They were already making exclusives for Microsoft, and one of the new studios is newly formed of spare parts and we have no clue what they are. There were really only 2 studios of significance that were signed. Ninja Theory and Compulsion and the signing didn't even make We Happy Few exclusive.

"no news for PS Plus subscribers"

Actually they announced that Black Ops 3 PS4 would be given immediately as a bonus free game. So, now PS Plus subscribers get XCOM 2, Black Ops 3, and Trials Fusion this month on PS4. Not too shabby.

"one can only imagine if deep dive is the new buzz word for gameplay videos. I was expecting actual devs talking about the games in detail but that didn't happen"

These were extended gameplay demos, not just a few minutes but rather 15 minutes. Besides, you should be used to buzz words and phrases. " Play the game not the resolution", " true 4K", "the cloud", "dx12", "games as a service", "plays best on Xbox", "play anywhere", "jump in", "beast". If you actually watched the entire broadcast devs like Insomniac and Sucker Punch did sit down and talk extensively. Insomniac even played a lengthy live demo apart from what was shown on stage and answered questions.

"Shawn Layden leaked everything. He left ppl wondering if we would hear about new exclusives but turns out there was no surprises whatsoever"

So he leaked everything but made people think there would be new exclusives? Huh? Which is it? Sony told people it was a focus on 4 main games with a few 3rd party announcements and that's what it was. They were straightforward. There was a big surprise actually, it was NIOH 2.

Hitler.

Hope you feel good about yourself..

GrubsterBeater2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

Damn, did you snowflakes really need me to add an '/s' at the end of that comment to realize I wasn't actually quoting Hitler about his comments on previous E3 conferences? I imagine each person who hit the disagree button saying to themselves: "Take THAT, you alt-right fascist!"

Don't worry, just a few more disagrees and you just might get that darn Trump out of office!

Hahahaha

By the way, Sony definitely won that conference. They didn't have the best show they've ever had, but it was really good, and you could show basically anything and win against XBox.

People, people again let the MS fandom have their day in the sun. They've taking so many L's from the start of this generation to present they need to see the bright future ahead lol.

They gotta find/see the silver lining somewhere lol.

nucky642138d ago

did you see the games sony showed gameplay for? after seeing those games, the "winner" is anyone with a ps4.

StormSnooper2138d ago

Objectively Sony won on games. I mean there is no denying that. On presentation, I think MS won with a well rehearsed show.

Saijahn2137d ago

I definitely agree about there being no winners. MS bombed on exclusives, had some other great announcements like the new studios and studio acquisition.

Sony showed the best games but games that still have a TBD release date so nothing coming on the back end of this year.

Third party titles rule once again.

I expected so much more from MS though. I knew Sony already blew their load with their exclusives that already released.

Best in show - Ghost of Tsushima

T2X2137d ago

Yeah, "winning" is subjective. All people should care about is, did they show stuff you'll like when it releases? If so, you "won".

Realms2137d ago

I agree this nonsense that MS won is BS, most of the games they presented where third party and that's cool but they showed nothing new to get excited about. Sony showed a more in-depth view of games already announced so again it was ok but nothing incredible with the exception of Ghost of Tsushima. EA was abysmal, Ubisoft showed only two interesting games Beyond good and Evil and Odessy. Bethesda showed games that are next gen and Nintendo had nothing over all very lackluster in comparison with recent years if anything it was disappointing.

Aquanox2137d ago

It isn't that hard to admit that Microsoft won E3 this year. Their show was by far the best, better organized and generated more enthusiasm among gamers and journalists. Yes, Sony still has the best exclusives, but we already knew that before E3. MS is doing catch up but hell, they seem like they're doing everything right for the mid term and ahead. Gamepass is huge is you consider the quality of games it will include (Gears 5, Horizon 4, Battletoads) and the acquisition of NInja Theory and other studios is a big promise for gamers. MS definitely generated the most buzz this year. If it was only about showing exclusives, then Sony would've won way before this E3. E3 is all about the future, and in that respect, Microsoft clearly outdid Sony.

Realms2137d ago

LOL. What did MS win? Will it translate to more sales? Will they have more games than Sony this year or next? If people want to say that they liked MS presentation more than Sony's fine cool whatever but as far as everything else all I saw was Halo, Forza, Gears, rinse repeat. The only note worthy thing they announced was them adquring Ninja Theory because all of the other studios already made their games exclusive so that is kind of meh. Overall nobody won because nobody really stood out or went above and beyond. Take away all the third party games announced by MS and then come back and say they won with a straight face.

Format was not good but the games overall the best

RainbowBrite2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

Well I like games and gaming. I'm a gamer. I'm not interested in presentations or formats. But it seems like a lot of people are suddenly PR specialists

Aceman182138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

Man they can have the win if they want, what I want is those 4 games Sony showed at their presser cause that's what's more important. Presentation means nothing to me.

I've never cared how the games were presented, just show me what the games look and play like.

If I didn't own a Pro already this presser would 100% convince me to run out, and purchase one.

Now MS on the other hand well they had such a nice little presentation, but it sure did not convince me to go and rebuy their console again. The 3rd party stuff I'll buy on Pro, and their exclusives I don't care about currently. Hopefully NT can make me a game like their other ones that I love. Also eager to see if playground can go something other than a racer. The other 3 studios I don't care about.

andibandit2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

Even the developers that make the games you love, want a good presentation, to garner more interests in their games and gain revenue.

zeuanimals2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

Honestly, this just sounds like fanboy crap now. I remember people being in love with Sony's presentation at E3 2016 which was way better than this year's. But that doesn't mean I think MS had the better E3 this year. They might have B's in almost every conceivable metric you could grade a conference with, but Sony had A+'s in the most important metrics and I think it tipped E3 in their favor. I just don't understand why people are tossing presentation out the window and saying it doesn't matter. It matters, but it's not everything.

alb18992138d ago

There is nothing that i can say to prove that MS won because people sometimes believe what they want to believe......but let me try.
What title announced sony that you didn't know about?
Which titles presented have date of release?
Last year I remember everyone thought that MS will show us halo and gears but wasn't like that, some of you talk as if every year MS shows a new halo and a new gears but this generation I have seen just one new halo and one new gears and yes, all of the xbox fans want that news and we get it on this e3 2018. FORZA Horizon is just the most enjoyable racing game this gen and always deliver, ori was fantastic and to talk about the 5 new studios and confirm all the exclusives on the gamepass is a win!
Some of you said that the games that will make does studios are for next gen.....how do you know it? Playground announced a new open world ip one year ago and why will I think the others 4 studios were bought without any solid projects on the table, why?
Why it is a problem that MS talk about next gen?
I bought an X but I new that was just an upgrade.
On e3 2017 I saw already spiderman gameplay, i don't even know what is about kojima's game and the last of us gameplay was demonstrated to be false.
Tsushima was the savior of that conference because was amazing but is not enough to say that this boring presented conference was the winner........and with all what I've said MS showed better not exclusive games too!!!
Come on!!!

cd12137d ago (Edited 2137d ago )

You claim Forza Horizon is the "most enjoyable racing game" but i dislike road racers and very much prefer track racing - I also hate that visible racing line thing that Forza uses.

Dont speak for others.

alb18992137d ago (Edited 2137d ago )

Cd1, I don't play God of war but you guys always says that is the best game....maybe it is but not for me.......see what I did there?

cd12137d ago (Edited 2137d ago )

@alb

I never claim best - best is completely subjective. That's what you just did, not me - see what i did there?

DivineAssault 2138d ago

Think of each game you surely know your buying then add it up. Which company is getting your cash? Thats who wins in my book

TekoIie2138d ago

That's a fair way of looking at it.

Tbh I always find it really weird how we try and pick winners and losers with E3 since it feels like we're focused purely on the conference and not what was shown throughout the event a lot of the time.

If we're absolutely forced to pick thought I'd say MS won this one. They had some good announcements and surprises and I think Sony and Nintendo lacked those this year.

OB1Biker2138d ago

The press want to focus on the conference because its easy and more clickbaity.
Conferences are not E3, simple as that. I'm not sure what Ms had to offer besides the conference which didn't bring new AAA IP.
E3 had demos for Spider man, Days Gone, TLOU II, Ghost of T. Psvr games and more

nucky642138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

i did the math for what i'm buying in the next year: xbox - 0 and ps4 - 380 (based on games with release dates.)

alb18992137d ago

Yep, you have 1 ps4 and 0 xbox so why will you buy a game for xbox?

nucky642137d ago (Edited 2137d ago )

alb - right. and the reason is lack of games on xbox that i want to play. the only game i have an interest in is the "ori" games - they look fantastic......but i'm not going to buy a console to play just those 2 games.
since you seem too slow to understand, i'll simplify it for you. i own a ps4 because they put out great games that i want to play. and i'm not the only one - this is why sony outsells MS almost 2:1.

Destiny10802138d ago

phil desperately try's to tick all the boxes, new console on the way, new halo on the way, new studios on the way, new crackdown on the way

sony are releasing games of the generation, not in 3/4 years time but right know, God of War

ApocalypseShadow2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

I know right?

Sounds like Phil delivering promises as usual to only quietly back out of them later after lying and misleading gamers. Still waiting on the cloud and vr.

And I still get chuckles from "exclusive........premier ...."

What exactly is a "you saw it first on our stage exclusive?" About as bad as a boy biting into a hamburger first but still had to share half the burger with his little sister. But acts like the burger was all his.

As for Sony's E3,if any gamer can name any Xbox 1st party game that was out doing what Sony deep dived for those 4 games, we're all ears waiting.

And talking about the future doesn't mean Sony isn't getting ready for PS5 already. Acquiring developers in hopes of improving 1st party isn't the same as already having award winning 1st party developers, award winning games and advanced game engines today.

And, If Sony lost because of ninja theory. They're still winning by owning their license of heavenly sword. The one game that I still think has sold more than ninja theory's later game releases.

ShottyatLaw2138d ago

I've been following E3 from the beginning, and I have never seen this idea that only exclusives matter at the show. It's at least entertaining to see the goal posts get packed up and removed from the stadium completely though.

I saw dozens of games I'm excited about during these shows. Many of those games were at Sony's show, a few at Nintendo's and Bethesda's, but a shit load were at MS's show. I couldn't care less who has exclusivity.

Also, the "World Premiere" stuff is 100% why E3 is still exciting. A brand new game is what it's all about. Are we really downplaying that?

Beyond the terrible presentation, Sony's deep looks into their games was disappointing to me. These were fantastic game play demos, but look at the Smash breakdown for what a true deep dive should look like. "Deep dive" is now almost as eye roll-worthy as "console launch exclusive."

MuddyWaters2138d ago

"They're still winning by owning their license of heavenly sword. The one game that I still think has sold more than ninja theory's later game releases."

Who other than the most hardened Sony fanboy who ever utter such words? This is just cringeworthy and a total lack of respect of the studio. Why are you so salty about them now working with Microsoft because that is all that I get out of that poorly misguided view.

ApocalypseShadow2138d ago

The point muddy, is that ninja theory has not created anything better than what they created for Sony. Nothing cringe worthy about it.

Buying the studio, that to this day, can't best their PS3 title is telling of their level. It's a loss for the playstation platform having one less developer. But Sony will make up for that with their 1st party 10 fold. And you know their teams are capable of doing it.

When Microsoft has to wait years for the possibility of getting a good game out of them for next Gen, not this Gen,their purchase means nothing at the moment.

EDKICK2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

@zeuanimals
"And the 3rd party commitment doesn't need to be stated, nor does the extra power of the Xbox One X. I don't remember Sony saying any of that any chance they got"

You kidding right???
That's all Sony and it's fans on this site talked about for the first couple years after it came out lol, same with indies. Sony was all about having the most power, showcasing independent games, and touting their best 3rd party support, until they got some big exclusives out. Like @ShottyatLaw said the goalposts for "what's the best" or what "wins" moves to whatever Sony is doing best at the time, and it makes since Sony is killing it this gen, but let's not pretend it doesn't happen.

Look, this whole "who won E3" is nonsense I liked Microsofts the best because I own an Xbox and all 50 games they showed I can play on my Xbox and most of them I will, many of them exclusives. But if you loved Sony's big four you may have liked theirs the best and that's fine neither one of us is "wrong" period.

MuddyWaters2138d ago

"The point muddy, is that ninja theory has not created anything better than what they created for Sony."

Heavenly Sword has a Metacritic rating of 79 and they have already bested it, so yes you're whole point is cringeworthy and comes across as salty over the whole situation. You have no respect for Ninja Theory and certainly no respect for Microsoft. You're crude views are nothing but shortsighted and everything you post comes across as a console warrior. It's embarrassing since I am also a PS4 owner and this toxicity needs to stop. You're crude views are nothing but shortsighted.

Here's Sony's E3 in a nutshell,

We are going to show you the same games we announced last year and years prior but this time some actual gameplay on a couple. We sell better than our competitors so that will continue to provide us shelter from any criticisms.

Grade C+

Microsoft's E3,

We are showing you we are committed. We added 5 studios to our 1st party portfolio. We have games coming out on the Xbox One such as Forza Horizon 4, Halo Infinity and Gears 5. We are also underway with new Xbox hardware in the future (just like Sony announced they are working on the PS5 last year). GamePass has been a huge success for us. Plus all of these multiplat games we are showing is commitment that third party still sees the Xbox brand as very important and all of our games will play best on consoles with the Xbox One X.

Grade A-

Nintendo,

Switch is doing amazingly well and 3DS is slowing down, we are shifting more to Switch. We have big games coming like Smash and Pokémon but we are again running into delays which will hopefully correct itself next year along with more ports. No bad pacing, just a 40 minute video, half dedicated to Smash.

Grade C

zeuanimals2138d ago

C+ for showing some of the best games at E3? Sure, they might have already been known quantities but each one of those were arguably system sellers on their own. And you see the problem with another Halo, Forza, and Gears, right? Halo Infinite even being just a basic trailer, just landscape shots and a MC reveal. And the 3rd party commitment doesn't need to be stated, nor does the extra power of the Xbox One X. I don't remember Sony saying any of that every chance they got, let alone much at all if ever, when they had the stronger console for most of this gen or when they were trying to win people back when 3rd parties were less cool with them during the PS3 era.

MuddyWaters2138d ago

Every E3 has a bulk of third party in every Sony press conference prior to this year, are you telling me that is now irrelevant? Unlike who seem to make up the largest sector here on N4G, most people who go to E3 and all the gaming press are not going there to focus entirely on exclusives. They are going to see the surprise announcements and games in general. Microsoft showed plenty of games.

My how things change. Before they got called out for being too much TV and not enough games. Now they show 50 games and all anyone on here cares about are 4 exclusives on the PS4. I have news for you, N4G does not represent the general public.

FGHFGHFGH2138d ago

So if SONY showed the same multiplats as ms, would they have had a better conference? Because those games will be available on ps4 also. What games besides forza and crackdown are coming out soon? What happened to microsoft not showing games far from release?

MuddyWaters2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

"What games besides forza and crackdown are coming out soon?"

What games besides Spiderman is coming out soon?

"So if SONY showed the same multiplats as ms, would they have had a better conference?"

Sony did show a few games that are also coming to the Xbox One and other platforms. Having more games would have been more interesting yes and would have paced their conference better. I don't know about you but I'd rather see 5 multiplats than sit through a 15 minute intermission. Sony knows the importance of third party, that's where most of their game sales comes from and why they always seem to leave the busy holiday season for those titles. They decided to try something different this year and it failed.

"What happened to microsoft not showing games far from release?"

What rules are you playing by because you can't have a different set for everyone? Nintendo also says they will show games closer to release but showed a teaser for Metroid. We also have no idea if Gears 5 and Halo Infinite are coming out in 2019 because they could very well be.

Admit it, Sony's E3 was poorly conceived and came across as a company who feels like they don't have to do much just because they are selling so well.

2138d ago
zeuanimals2137d ago

Sony was on stage saying they have the most powerful console at every conference? Really? That's news to me.

CaptainOmega2138d ago

Xbox 'won' because they had the better presentation. If you look at what they showed, and what the overall message was... they lost. They said to wait till next generation if you want new IP.

Vasto2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

"If you look at what they showed, and what the overall message was... they lost"

LMAO, they showed 50 games, announced 5 new 1st party studios, Fast Start for Xbox Game Pass, A new console quality streaming service and that the next gen Xbox is already being worked in by the team that did the Xbox One X.

We want new features, new services, new tech, and new games, games, games. Not just new IP.

The downplay is sad at this point.

CaptainOmega2138d ago

50 games that can be played on other platforms.

No reason to buy an Xbox at this point.

Kribwalker2138d ago

at no point did they say that lol

Vasto2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

@BeardedDrachen

Then don't buy one because Microsoft does not need anything. They came out at E3 will pure confidence and put the entire gaming world on notice.

If you own a PS4 then you need a PC and you will still be giving Microsoft money by buying their games and their OS which is Windows. This is why Microsoft is the king of kings.
Thats over $1000 while all Xbox gamers need is just 1 system and thats the Xbox One / Xbox One X and they are covered to play everything.

The time for downplay is over.

CaptainOmega2138d ago

@Kribwalker

I guess you can't read between the lines.

CaptainOmega2138d ago

@Vasto

So you completely missed my point.

There is no reason to buy an Xbox. Doesn't matter if some of the games are on Windows OS..... There's no reason to buy the console.

ShottyatLaw2138d ago

I'm probably buying 20-30 of the games that MS showed. Some will be bought on Xbox, PC, PS, and hopefully even Switch. That's more than any other show.

As a gamer, I guess we have a different definition of what matters (I'm assuming you're an investor based on how hard you've been working to sell your product).

DigitalRaptor2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

@ Vasto

They showed like 44 games that are multiplatform and timed-exclusive - A.K.A. coming to PS4. They had more new game announcements which is why many people are saying they had the better conference. Ultimately though, it makes very little difference.

2 of the first-party studio acquisitions were already making Xbox exclusives, so.... inconsequential at best. The other 3 studios are far away from new game releases and Microsoft is still far and away behind Sony when it comes to AAA first-party studios and desired quality and new IP.

As happens every generation, the PS5 will already have started to be worked on since the PS4 released (so of course the Xbox successor is being developed too), Phil just stated the obvious and voracious fanboys like yourself came away thinking it was some brand new information. In other news though, AMD is said to be dedicating 2/3 of their total resources to create the Navi GPU for Sony, and supposedly EXCLUSIVELY for Sony. I'm not sure why folks like yourself think only Microsoft is capable of creating a console like the Xbox One X, it's hilarious. Sony released an upgrade in 2016 with 2016 tech. MS released an upgrade in 2017 with 2017 tech. Sony and MS will both release consoles in 2020 with 2020 tech. ;)
------

@ Kribwalker

BeardedDrachen was talking about the overall message. Microsoft delivered the message that if you want any new games (let alone new IP) from these new studios you will have to wait until next-generation. That is why he was trying to drum up hype for the next-generation with all the buzzwords he used and the confirmation that a new Xbox is in development. And there is just over 2 years until the next generation.

To break it down, 2 of the studios they acquired were already making Xbox exclusives.

With Microsoft's support it took Undead Labs 2 years to "remaster" their first game, and it took them 3 years to develop and release its sequel to mixed reviews, which they've only just released and are still supporting.

Playground Games team #1 is finishing up Forza Horizon 4 and will be supporting that game through 2019, and Playground Games team #2 is building up their studio to begin creating what is rumored to be a reboot of Fable, which won't arrive until the next-gen.

Compulsion Games is finishing up their Early Access game that won't be out until August and took 5 years to develop. If they're going bigger for the next game that will take at least 3 years, and a new IP could take longer.

Ninja Theory will likely be creating something bigger than Hellblade for their next project. With big publisher support in the past, it's taken them 3 years between big AAA game releases. They've only very recently finished porting Hellblade to Xbox One, their new game (and new IP) is likely only in the very early stages, and a quality new IP (if they're getting the AAA support from MS), will take longer than 3 years to produce.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos2h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto1h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger881h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).
