Spider-Man on PS4 is like every superhero game before it

Matt Kamen: "The tale of the Emperor's New Clothes is a well-known fable. At its simplest, it tells of a young boy who is the only person to point out that the Emperor, consumed by hubris and surrounded by sycophants, is actually naked and not dressed in the finest robes.

When it comes to Marvel's Spider-Man on PS4, I feel like that boy. In the face of what feels like mandatory excitement for the game, I've remained largely nonplussed, and even after playing the upcoming superhero adventure at E3 2018, I can't quite grasp what people are so excited over."

OB1Biker2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

' In the face of what feels like mandatory excitement for the game,....... I can't quite grasp what people are so excited over."'
Haha that's some special kind of narrow minded.
The Spider man exclusive on PS4?
The Insomniac games studio ?
I trust most people playing the demo are impressed for a good reason.

MetalGearsofWar2139d ago

Your comment is as narrow minded. Some people don't like Insomniac.

Rimeskeem2139d ago

Then don't buy their games.

OB1Biker2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

Why?
Its a widely praised studio.
I understand not liking all of their games but they are great professionals. Gamers can only like their dedication.

AspiringProGenji2139d ago

And that's a reason to write an article or question everyone's excitement for the game right?

No!

Obscure_Observer2139d ago

@OB1Biker

"Its a widely praised studio."

Yeah, they´re an amazing studio. Yet, some people start to hate them the moment they announced Sunset Overdrive exclusive to Xbox.

Just make a quick research here on N4G and you´ll know who they are.

UCForce2139d ago

@Obscure_Observer Really ? I know Sunset Overdrive is a great game but Xbox Community don’t have any connection with Insomniac Game in the past. PlayStation Community know Insomniac Game pretty well since Spyro The Dragon. Despite Insomniac Game is independent, they still have strong relationship with Sony and PlayStation Community. I don’t think Spider-Man will come any platforms anytime soon because Sony is now completely owned Spider Man.

BlaqMagiq12139d ago

The article is taking about Spider-Man not Insomniac. You say his comment is narrow minded but only pointed that out.

MuddyWaters2139d ago

Not everyone likes any game so it's kind of a moot point. Spiderman looks excellent and it's going to be a big hit. The gameplay looks great and will be a must buy for me since I also enjoyed the Batman games as well.

doggo842139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

"Some people don't like Insomniac."

Shame, the tears will flow when this game sells gang busters and receives high praise. I can't WAIT to laugh at haters like you. It happened with Horizon, it will happen with TLOU 2, and it will definitely happen with Spiderman.

Razzer2139d ago

"Yet, some people start to hate them the moment they announced Sunset Overdrive exclusive to Xbox. "

"Some people" hated Bungie the moment they left Microsoft. And "some people" hate games with female leads. Hell, you can find "some people" that hate anything. So what point do you think you are making? That you can decide when to reference "some people" about whatever you want to make whatever point you want? Yeah….no shit.

ArchangelMike2139d ago

Not liking Insomniac does not mean that the games they make are not excellent. I might not like Lucas Film, but it doesn't mean Indiana Jones or Star Wars are not some of the best movie franchises ever.

Ceaser98573612139d ago

I know guys not liking any Devs for that matter.
But I have only heard praise about spiderman ya! some people are salty and will downplay the game because its a ps4 exclusive.. So haters gonna hate..

Veneno2139d ago

Insomniac is no doubt one of the most talented studios out there. I love the Resistance series but thats about it from them. Nevertheless when they come out with new games it should be payed with close attention.

darthv722139d ago

Im excited for spiderman because it is made by IG. They make fun explorative games like R&C and Sunset Overdrive.

The close combat also reminds me of Arkham Asylum.

thejigisup2139d ago

Why not like a game bc you don't like the studio? Spider-Man is unlike anything they've done before and on a much larger scale. so what if "some people don't like insomniac". What does that have to do with the game. I don't think you made a good argument there.

MetalGearsofWar2139d ago

Insomniac isn't the greatest devs in the world. And the company that made the best Spiderman game was not Insomniac.
I'm not even hating on the game. It looks like yet another Arkham clone, which isnt a bad thing.

trooper_2139d ago

Why, because they make games for Sony?

The jealousy for PS exclusives is absolutely hilarious.

The Wood2139d ago

Yeah obscure. The Xbox fanatics were really singing the praises of insomniac before sunset. . . Typical.

ILostMyMind2139d ago

They don't have a PlayStation.

MetalGearsofWar2139d ago

@trooper_

When did I say any of that?

Teflon022139d ago

If you don't like Insomniac Games, I don't know. Literally no reason to dislike them. The Ratchets and Sunset Overdrive are some of the best games on respective consoles

Realms2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

LOL. There are some salty ass fanboys Insomniac makes good fun games, if they are not your cut of tea cool move on plenty of people do like their games. This article is pointless and his argument is weak ASF.

The 10th Rider2138d ago

To be fair to Insomniac's track record, their average score is a 78/100, which isn't exactly exceptional, but it's definitely high enough to show they can consistently put out good games. http://www.metacritic.com/c...

With Spiderman I think they may have hit the sweet spot and have their first game in almost 15 years to get a 90+ . . . but at the same time I wouldn't be shocked if it was in line with their other recent work and sat in the low 80's. That's a perfectly good score and the game just looks like a blast to play anyways . . . at the end of the day it's how fun it is, and not what score it gets, that matters most anyways.

DialgaMarine2138d ago

But I’ll bet money you liked them when they made Sunset Overdrive.

WillyC0092138d ago

Not that they dont lole insomniac. Trying to just shoot down yet another outstanding ps4 exclusive. That's all.

sizeofyou2138d ago

To be fair...some people don't like Insomniac due to their vocalised US political stance. If politics is more crucial to those people than gaming then they have a right to avoid Insomniac games. Each to their own.
I'm not one of those I hasten to add...Spiderman already ordered and waiting bldy patiently..!

OffRoadKing2138d ago

What possible reason would there be to not like insomniac, they made some fantastic games. Speaking of narrow minded.

Deep-throat2139d ago

You're right. People are excited because it's exclusive to their preferred platform.

UCForce2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

People are excited because the game make you feel like a true Spider Man. People have played it on E3 booth and the impression is all positive. Open your eyes, buddy. When the game come out, it’s going to sell a lot of copies for PS4.

OB1Biker2139d ago

Being exclusive is actually one more reason to be excited for PS gamers because it means a better optimisation focus on the said platform and an additional incentive and available funds to make it a great game vs the previous games that were only meant to make money.

CaptainOmega2139d ago

Or because it feels like a good Spiderman game.

doggo842139d ago

Another win for the PS4. Shame, must make you cry.

Ceaser98573612139d ago

"You're right. People are excited because it's exclusive to their preferred platform"
See told you People like Deep throat is the problem for the gaming community they cannot accept that Spiderman is a PS4 exclusive.. Boo hoo! cry me a river..
LOL! Insomniac was tired replying to non PS4 gamers that Spiderman is exclusive to the PS4.. and here we have someone who thinks otherwise..

r2oB2139d ago

And some people are salty it's not available on their preferred platform.

100_SavAGe2139d ago

And Iam pretty sure if this was on Xbox you would be all over it

2139d ago
trooper_2139d ago

People are excited because they're gamers, not individuals on a public site downplaying any game that's not on their system despite positive previews.

Steveoreno12139d ago

And master race are butt hurt.

Kribwalker2139d ago

I’m excited for spider-man. Loved sunset overdrive and this has its DNA all over it

Teflon022139d ago

I'm excited because Insomniac Games has proven with Ratchet and Clanks series that they know how to do the right thing with Spiderman. The have the comedy and sarcasm on the exact same level in ratchet. We know they can handle action and optimize a game great as long as it's a single platform. They also aim for fun before all, so you know it'll be great

Shineon2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

That is why, because if it was exclusive to Windows then it would be just another spiderman game the word playstion exclusive adds more attractiveness to it for the fanboys

bumbleforce2138d ago

I agree. I plan to get this when it goes on sale. If it wasnt exclusive I think people would care less

2138d ago
IamTylerDurden12138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

People would be excited if it was multiplatform as well. People are excited for this game because it looks amazing and it's made by a dream studio for the game. People are excited because this looks like the return to glory for Spiderman games.

People are excited because the visuals are amazing, the combat is varied and fluid, the animations are among the best we've seen for any game, and every demo looks spectacular.

The villain roster is packed, there are numerous different upgradable suits with unique abilities, the city is huge and beautiful, web swinging is phenomenal, and the game just looks A1.

If you try hating on this game you won't get far, the proof is out there. There are tons of lengthy gameplay demos and trailers to show how fantastic the game looks.

itsmebryan2138d ago

@ucforce

How do you know you haven't played it? That was a well written article that make good points that are well explained. I don't think it was clickbait at all. Did you read the whole article? If you did what do you disagree with from your actual experience with the game?

OffRoadKing2138d ago

Looks like people are trying to downplay it because it isn't on their preferred platform.

ChickeyCantor2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

I think the point the writer raised is : this just seems more of the same. Things we have seen in spiderman games before. Or even other super hero games. And the consumer is going bananas over something that doesn't seem to have that much depth.

I haven't played the game, but I can see that this might end up being a dumb brawler. The studio has done some great games. I just don't see this game do the same for them.

FunAndGun2139d ago

I mean, I really don't understand what else would you expect from a Spiderman game? That is Spiderman... swinging through the city, stopping crime, fighting baddies, and doing it with flair.

I think a top developer perfecting all those things into 1 Spiderman game is cause for excitment.

WickedLester2139d ago

"Its more of the same..."

You could say that about literally EVERY video game in existence.

ChickeyCantor2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

@funandgun

I'm not expecting anything else. I'm saying it's what some might find boring. That's it.

@wickedLester

Nah, because even when it's more of the same there is usually more substance to the gameplay. Spiderman does nothing different from older spiderman games or even Batman: AA

doggo842139d ago

"Nah, because even when it's more of the same there is usually more substance to the gameplay. Spiderman does nothing different from older spiderman games or even Batman: AA"

ChickeyCantor2139d ago

" Let's just say you'll be eating your words SO fast."

I don't care. Game is not for me. I've seen enough that it's just a brawler.

2139d ago
r2oB2139d ago

@ chickey

Almost every Spiderman game prior has had either clunky controls or poor combat (or both), so this game is not more of the same in that regard because it's confirmed to have fluid controls and a good fighting system (similar to Batman Arkham series). And the only thing it shared with Batman is the fighting (melee). Batman does not run on walls in the Arkham series and from the looks of it the slinging isn't as seem less as in Spiderman. So I'm not sure what you mean by it does nothing different. That's just false.

trooper_2139d ago

...Spiderman is a superhero. What the heck were you expecting in a Spiderman game aside from beating bad guys and saving the world?

Saving kittens from trees?

Your argument, sir is absolutely ignorant and beyond the levels of asininity.

shinrock2139d ago

It's a reskinned Batman Arkham knight.

Realms2138d ago

Maybe because there hasn't been a good Spiderman in a long time, even if it takes a cue from Rocksteady's Batman series it's still a win. You don't have to reinvent the wheel every single time just deliver a fun enjoyable game with Spiderman that's what most fans want.

Knushwood Butt2138d ago

'I think the point the writer raised is : this just seems more of the same. '.

Coming from a Nintendo defender, that's hypocritical.

Mario Party
Smash Bros

Knushwood Butt2138d ago

Would you like me to list the Nintendo games that are, 'more of the same'?

It may take some time.

itsmebryan2138d ago

The Sony defense squad is out in force. They don't can't believe maybe someone doesn't like a Sony exclusive. For you if you don't something is wrong with you. I had a PS3 and didn't like the Sony exclusives GT. 5 &6 were disappointing but, highly praised,. God of war was boring, hated Last of us, and that is why I didn't buy a PS4.

But, they can believe someone just doesn't like Sony exclusives. It's weird how defensive they get.

ChickeyCantor2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

>Would you like me to list the Nintendo games that are, 'more of the same'?

You're only proving my point. You think games are of the same so you're less likely to be interested in them. Just like the writer, he doesn't get the hype because to him it seems the same shit in a new jacket. It's not for him.

List your games, it just enforces my point.

Before I say what I want to say know that I'm a Playdtation gamer. Been a PS gamer since 1997. Love PS exclusives but I have my own taste and don't go with the herd. I understand that a lot of people love this spiderman game. I like Insomniac games in general. Resistance 1 was great, 2 was pretty good, did not like 3. R&C games are one of my favorites.

However, I don't understand why this game is so appealing. To me it does not look that great. In fact, the only PS exclusive I'm currently excited for is Ghost of Tsushima. The rest does not interest me that includes Spiderman.

So Spiderman is not universally loved. Just wanted to put this out there.

UCForce2139d ago

Dude, Spider-Man is special for everyone including adults and kids. Just like Superman, I hope Rocksteady reveal Superman game. Both of them share similarities that both of them have optimism and hope.

ChickeyCantor2139d ago

UCForce2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

@ChickeyCantor Well, he should understand and respect it.

AnubisG2139d ago

UCForce,

That is my personal opinion. I respect everyones who loves this but to state that every single gamer or PS gamer is in love with this game is a huge stretch. I'm not, but that's just me. My own personal opinion. Apparently, people don't agree with the fact that everyone is entitled to their pwrsonal opinions and I MUST like what all of you like otherwise....what? I'm not a gamer or what?

And what do you mean bt I shoukd respect a video game? Come on!

OB1Biker2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

Hey, Im sure Spider man s not universally loved. Nobody said that, did they?
Heck I dont know of a video game or a super hero that are universally loved.
However, would you write an article about how you cant grasp why so many people love it?
Theres no point. You actually said you understand that a lot of people love it.
Its a bit like saying you dont understand why people love Batman or any super hero. Of course you do understand actually. Its just the way it is

AnubisG2138d ago

No, I would not write an article about why I personally don't find this particular game that appealing. It would be a waste of time. If I was a gaming journalist, I would just report on gaming without bias to the best of my ability and would not drag my personal views and believes into it because no one really cares and everyones opinion is different. But that's just me.

C-list?

Shocker's at least on the B-list, man. He's kicked some serious ass in the past.

Rachel_Alucard2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

The unimaginative boss battle was not about who you fight, but how you fight them. The shocker fight is just activating context sensitive prompts the whole fight and dodging his easily telegraphed attacks. It's the most basic boss fight formula on the planet, and so many devs have done it to death. But there really isn't much else you could do differently with this kind of game.

elkaki1232139d ago

The game being an exclusive is a reason to be exited? Why? There are lots of reasons why you could be exited for the game but that is not a good one.
Do you feel superior because you choose the right console to play the game?
Is the game superior just because a lot of people wont be able to play so you can talk to them as it is the most amazing game ever?

ShadowWolf7122138d ago

Actually, exclusivity does give some reason to be excited in that the game ill be designed with a single platform in mind. This will allow the developers to utilize that platform and all of its unique strengths and features, as opposed to trying to tweak it for 3+ different platforms at a time causing some versions to suffer.

xX-oldboy-Xx2138d ago

Exclusives are exciting because they are optimised to their respective hardware. And the current gen of consoles are tied to their base models? of which the PS4 is the most powerful. So PS4 exclusives should be the best looking games on available to console users.

HZD, GOW, TLOU2 all show this to be true.

OB1Biker2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

I gaves reasons why being exclusive is exciting, and that was in reply to someone. Thats obviously not the main reason to be excited. Besides, if it wasnt exclusive, it might not exist at all.
If you dont understand, that doesnt give you the right to be Insulting with your 'Do you feel superior' misguided attitude.

rainslacker2138d ago

If some people aren't into such things, then they probably won't get it. Unless their lack of excitement stems from it being a bad game, I don't see why one would write an article about it.

But to answer the question why people are excited, it's because it's been so long since we've had a good Spider-Man game, and insomnia are good devs

morganfell2139d ago

If he can't grasp why people would be excited for a game, even if it is not his preferred genre, then he shouldn't be writing opinion pieces about said games. Imagine if a sports reporter said I can't figure out why people are excited for the World Cup...but I am going to write an opinion on the World Cup anyway. My response would be, "Could you print that on toilet paper so it has some use? Thanks."

If soccer isn't your bag, it isn't mine then apply that writer's mentality to the Super Bowl or any major sporting event. Someone unable to supplant the motivations of the fans onto their own psyche really has no analysis worth reading on the thing concerning which they admittedly bear no connection.

Want to know the true nature of this article? It goes like this,

"I am so important I want the world to read and regard highly what I think, what I like, and what I do not like. After all, I am someone of importance"

This is the problem with reporting media in general and game media specifically. They are nothing more than bloated, swollen egos who feel they are more important than the story or game about which they are reporting or writing. If someone stuck a pin in this jerk there is enough hot air to fly around the world. Twice.

Palitera2139d ago

IMO, fans are overreacting. But that's probably only N4G being N4G.

I am a big PS player too, not on the whole fanboy thing though, and to me it feels like a somewhat shallow game. The combat lacks impact, but I get that it is a design matter, due to the hero's speed focus.

Ok, it has to be quick, but you can make some visual changes, put more juice in combat, improve animations and timing, and the hero can seem more powerful. In Destiny beta, one the "worst" weapons became much more used after they changed... its sound!

I have a friend, declared PS fan, HUGE Spider-Man fan. Saw the E3 video twice, came hyped, ended with average expectations. And it was on RDR2 hype level before it.

So the point is: you can understand open world games, you can enjoy Spider-Man, you can really know what you're talking about. And still think the game is somewhat lacking. Shouldn't that be obvious? The argument is just the typical teenager "you disagree with me so you're worthless".

Some people are narrow minded and think everyone should like the same thing, can't even understand what happens when someone disagrees. I'm glad many others are more mature and intelligent.

Highly praised developer of platformers (as in they have a history of making great platforming action games). They have had all the time in the world and have Sony to back it up (most games backed by sony have seen critical and commercial success). All the gameplay they have shown looks riveting with immersive, easy to learn/hard to master combat. The only reason i can see why you wouldn't be excited is if you dont care for spiderman and even then do you really need to make an opinion piece about it?

The 10th Rider2138d ago

Personally I do think it looks absolutely fantastic and I'm honestly more interested in it than any of the PS4's lineup thus far. That being said, to play devil's advocate:

Insomniac's average score for AAA titles over the past 10 years has been around a low 80's. Also, Sony's had plenty of titles even this gen that were met with a lukewarm critical reception: Knack, Killzone Shadowfall, Driveclub, Little Big Planet 3, The Order 1886, Knack 2, and plenty of PSN games.

I still think the game looks fantastic and it looks like Insomniac's best work in a longtime, but it's not like any of the things you brought up make it a surefire GOTY contender or anything.

Very few Insomniac games get exceptionally high praise (90+), but they also only really have one AAA game that I would consider a flop . . . and that's Fuse, when they worked with EA.

At the very least I think we can expect Spiderman to be a *good* game, but whether or not it will rise above that is still in question.

For me Spiderman was one of my favorite superheroes, but I've been dissapointed in pretty much all of the Spiderman games since the PS2 era. Even if the game only ends up as a good game in the low 80's and it's not the masterpiece we're all hoping for, finally having a good open-world Spiderman game on any modern console is more than enough to keep me happy.

Rimeskeem2138d ago

If you go off more recent history with both Sony and Insomniac the quality of their games (especially AAA) has risen dramatically. GG made Horizon after KZ, Insomniac has Sunset Overdrive and R&C remake, etc. It has been a while since both the publisher and developer have miss stepped.

The 10th Rider2138d ago

Yeah, I don't think it will be a misstep. I hope I made that clear, I just don't think it's a lock for being a masterpiece. As I said I have really high hopes and think it looks fantastic, but to play devil's advocate a 8/10 wouldn't be a surprising overall score. Either way it looks like we will be getting a Spiderman game that is, at minimum, a good game.

Twignberries2138d ago

Very funny how you mention all the Sony exclusives that weren't spectacular, then fail to mention all the FUVKING KILLER exclusives they've released this gen 🤣 like literally more masterpieces than any other platform EVER..

The 10th Rider2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

@Twignberries,

Why? I'm just saying that Sony's involvement doesn't guarantee a game turns out great, contradicting what was implied by Rimeskeem's comment. Considering that, there's no need to mention their great games, I'm just pointing out that, just like any other publisher, they've had a share of hits and misses.

I'm not sure that just because he isn't loving the game it is #FakeNews.

Sony exclusives are almost always hyped to level 1,000,000. And once they release they either live up to the hype or people talk about they diversity they provide to the PS platform.

To me, I enjoyed the demo, but it looked like Batman meets traditional spider-man games gameplay wise. From the demo I think it will be high 70's or low 80's. Making it a worthwhile purchase and very playable game. But, it isn't going to change gaming in any way going forward. I put it in the same mind space as Sunset Overdrive. Different, and different is good, but not innovative nor a game changer in any way.

UCForce2138d ago

Well, to be honest. Sony give people a purpose to buy PS4 because it’s exclusive game. You can see God Of War and Detroit Become Human boost PS4 units.

I am not cherry picking. The news article was that this game is not innovative... DeadSilence is calling that fake news. I am saying from what I have seen I do not see that as #fakenews. That does not mean the game is not likeable, nor good, it just means that there is really nothing new. That is just informing potential game buyers a realistic expectation so they buy and assess it for what it is (or is not).

The Death Of Arkham Has Me Worried About Spider-Man

Saad from eXputer: "After the rise of Rocksteady and its fall with post-Suicide Squad, I'm worried about Marvel's Spider-Man suffering a similar fate."

Hofstaderman20d ago

Why? According to the well publicized Insomniac leaks they have a slew of plans for Spiderman including its sequel.

CrimsonWing6920d ago

The sequel has had rumors that it could be sold piecemeal style or might be GaaS.

This is all coming from the leaks you mentioned. The problem is the industry is not doing well no matter how ill-informed people spin it on here when they see “sold 3 mill.” In those Sony leaks it showed the struggle to get ROI and they spend an insane amount of money to develop, which makes 0 sense to me when there’s not much to show for the increased development costs. Case in point would be Suicide Squad vs Arkham Knight.

I believe we’re in the middle of seeing a drastic change in media and distribution. This goes for movies, but more so for games and the industry is scrambling to figure out how to get more money out of consumers rather than stick to the “buy it once” to play it all.

These are things you need to pay attention to in order to know which direction the wind’s blowing with this sh*t storm. I was almost certain the GaaS initiative was killed when Jim was leaving, but now seeing the success of Helldivers 2… I’m thinking we’re in for a bumpy ride. I just don’t know what that looks like yet, but I don’t think it’s gonna be pretty.

Insomniac still has a good generation left in them before they get cannibalized by investors. It'll probably happen around the mid PS6 gen, when we see the beginning of the fall.

dmonee20d ago

Huh with this article? If Sony and Insomniac want to abandoned the Spider-Man franchise and make a half baked, live service Spider-Man game, and miss the mark with their fans, then God bless’em!!!!

Seems unlikely when they abandoned the GaaS spiderverse game but are still going ahead with single player games like Wolverine and Spider-Man 3.

Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Ultimate Spider-Man use to be my favorite until Insomniac games took over.

Inverno154d ago

I'd still choose Ultimate above all other games, followed by Shattered Dimensions

Abnor_Mal154d ago (Edited 154d ago )

My favorite and still champion Spiderman PS2, followed by Marvels Spiderman2, then Miles Morales, followed by Marvels Spiderman, and finally Ultimate Spiderman.

I need to drag out my PS3 and try Web of Shadows, owned the game for years and years and never played.

Shout out to cultured vultures for NOT making this 40 separate pages.

Spider-Man (2000), Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro, and Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions were all so good! I have fond memories playing them.
