Sea of Thieves Review - Destructoid

The foundation is great. The fundamentals are there. It doesn't take much imagination to see how this game could blossom into something magnificent. But so long as it's missing long-term depth and incentives to stick around past the first few weeks, Sea of Thieves will feel like a missed opportunity

I'd consider buying it...for sick squid 😏

russo1212224d ago

I do feel very sorry for the developers, not easy to read and listen all trash from community after their hard work. On the other hand it should be a wake-up call for not let the standards go to this level we are experiencing and it's kind of sad, really.

Best luck next time.

Godmars2902224d ago (Edited 2224d ago )

@russo121:
Feel bad for the devs because they were likely heavily constrained by what their publishers wanted.

@darthv72:
You missed the one-trick pony nature of that review.

Other than griefing other players/crews the game gets boring fast. You go through the motions wondering if you're having fun.

Majority of the reviews read out like this. "The game can be fun at times, but lacking depth right now. It could be something worth coming back to in time."

bluefox7552224d ago

Yeah, but considering it took them 4 years to get to this, I doubt players will stick around long enough for that to happen.

G20WLY2224d ago

The danger is those that believed there would be more content than the beta portrayed (and just wanted to love it at launch) will be long gone by the time it's actually worth a look.

Just like what happened to No Man's Sky. If it's not ready, delay it until it is!!

cellfluid2224d ago

Waiting for an update for this game to get better is like waiting for e3 2018 for Microsoft to reveal their bag!!

UltraNova2224d ago

From what I've read and watched so far SoT needs a whole game's worth if content to become a full...game. If Rare took 4 years to create the bare minimum how much more time donthey need to create all that content?

The game will be long forgotten by then.

frostypants2224d ago (Edited 2224d ago )

That's just another way of saying "if they ever make it into a good game, but right now it sucks."

You could say that about any game, really.

rainslacker2224d ago

Good point. Reviews now shouldn't give consideration on potential quality of content in the future. They have to rate the here and now. It's worth mentioning that more content will come, but there is no way to know if that content would be good. Like with GT:Sport, you wouldn't say the game is great because the SP is coming in 3-4 months time. You'd rate the quality of the content that is there then for the player to purchase.

GaaS shouldn't ever be a free pass to push out a thin game. If they want to do that with early access, fine, but you can still only rate the content that does exist.

joshljr2223d ago

I do think it's risky to rate based on potential... But with it following the GaaS model, it does make sense.

MegamanXXX2224d ago (Edited 2224d ago )

The same thing they said (critics) about no man's sky. The only difference is that No man's sky got a better overall review score than SOT and not to mention NMS was developed by a small team compared to Rare

darthv722224d ago

NMS did get more content but still lacks multiplayer interaction. That should have been the biggest fix for the game but something about the way it was designed prohibited it from working.

I expect SoT to get better content and expand on its multiplayer interactions as well.

2224d ago
DaDrunkenJester2224d ago

@gaming

SoT also has a goal..?

rainslacker2224d ago

NMS did have stuff to do when it released, and it wasn't overly boring or super repetative. Most of the negativity came from the fact it didn't have every single thing that every person expected. Heck, if Fable games got rated by the same metric, then they wouldn't score well either. NMS itself was more of an interesting art piece IMO, with lots of stuff to explore, whereas SoT is supposed to be an actual full game with more content to come, but as of right now, the exploration doesn't really seem to have much variety.

OffRoadKing2224d ago

I'd say any game where people say "could be something worth coming back to in time", just doesn't inspire confidence and supports all the low review scores and criticisms its getting.

JackBNimble2224d ago

Hopefully updates will be free.

darthv722224d ago

so far the answer from Rare is yes.

Does this count as a 'big site'?

Can we listen to this review or not?? Just checking, as that's how we're dismissing all the other bad scores..right? "site's too small", "not heard of this site", "it's a foreign site"!

Atanasrikard2224d ago

Same could be said about "small sites" that give it good scores. Reviews are opinions, nothing more. Lots of people like lots of things. What you should do is find reviewers who's opinions about games align with yours when you are looking for a review of a game.

Knushwood Butt2224d ago

I haven't let a review influence my game purchasing for years.

Having said that, this particular game doesn't look like my cup of tea.

mcstorm2224d ago

I'm with you on that gave the game a go last night a d although the people I was with sucked and had no game play it was enjoyable to play. Getting my friends on it today and teaming up and I think doing this the game will shine through even more. 6 is an advridge score but for a big mp game for me is a good starting score. I also see rare adding to this game as it goes along to but a great building block to start with imo and another good new ip for us to play. Some people will love it others will not just like anything in life.

i3eyond the Circle2224d ago (Edited 2224d ago )

This game sucks dick. How out of touch are Microsoft and its developers to not just cross reference and not shovel trash. They don't have ONE f$&%in person that works there that can say Hmmm... "What killed Destiny and No Mans Sky?" Lol these nibbas trash.

Weapon rolls, gear drops, story driven NPCs...so MANY missed opportunities for probably the most well polished 4 Player co op game.

notachance2224d ago (Edited 2224d ago )

the first time I saw this game's naval battle I was like, "Damn how cool it would be if they make a huge, multiple ships co-op naval battle against a grand marine fleet, in the middle of a storm"

but alas, it has less content than a 18-people indie studio NMS at launch... probably can't even make AI-controlled ship seeing how much teamwork it took to control a ship, let alone program them to cleverly fight against people.

DaDrunkenJester2224d ago

Weapon rolls and gear drops they purposefully avoided so that way it didn't become a PvP slaughterhouse due to no-lifers grinding countless hours and preying on people.

r2oB2224d ago

And now there is no reason to grind at all since there are no rewards or progression. In fact, there isn't a point to do anything except link up with a few friends to goof around on a ship and pass time with no purpose at all.

DaDrunkenJester2224d ago

@r2oB

I don't agree at all.

Dragonscale2224d ago

Just because you disagree doesn't mean he's wrong. It barely even classes as a game lol.

UnHoly_One2223d ago

Kids these days can't play a game if it doesn't require an excel spreadsheet to track your stats.

Listen, I like complicated RPGs as much as the next guy, but why is it so wrong for a game to just be "fun"?

"There's no reason to play"

FUN

FUN is the reason to play. If you can't have fun without ticking off boxes on a stat sheet and checking off 400 icons on the world map then that isn't the game's fault.

I'm sorry you don't know how to have fun anymore, is basically what I'm saying. lol

It's fine if you don't like it, really, I don't care.

But most of the negative comments I've seen basically boil down to one basic principle.

"It's not what I wanted it to be."

Well too bad, I guess.

Johnny does a nice balance of pros and cons and says he scores it a 6.5 for now but also loves playing it... go figure

https://youtu.be/vj1NDI67Lo...

Ricegum2224d ago

You are actually defending this so much.

darthv722224d ago (Edited 2224d ago )

I am actually defending the idea that the game can be fun to play. Where as most closed minded people say otherwise without ever playing it. His video mirrors my own feelings and that it really is a niche game that appeals to some, not all.

I personally like the concept of the game and hate to see it shit on by those who dont understand the kind of game it is. If it turns out there is never going to be any update for it and this is all there is... then I would change my tune but for now I am optimistic for what the game can become.

Atticus_finch2224d ago

Poor Darth. Go enjoy sot and stop trying to convince every one and yourself that the game is anything other than average.

darthv722224d ago

If everyone thought it was average then this wouldn't be an issue. the issue is the needless attack on the game, or those who say they are enjoying it, by others who have no interest. If people could be respectful, that difference of opinions are a thing, then we could have civil discussions. But this is N4g after all.

Atticus_finch2224d ago

Darth you are doing this to yourself. Nobody told you to go into every review and defend a game that was hyped and is now receiving 6 after 6. Fun is subjective, no one doubts that there are people having fun with the game but the criticism comes from the fact the game is Bare. Something most reviews seem to agree on. You can't honestly come to a video game forum and expect repect and civility, especially when the subjects are so trivial. Enjoy your game, life is short.

GamingSinceForever2224d ago

Exactly. You’d think he’d ignore all of this because he’s too busy having a blast playing it.

trooper_2224d ago

You can't be this out of touch with reality to defend this game

UnHoly_One2223d ago

Reality?

The reality is that myself and (so far) 9 of my friends have all been playing it and having a great time all week.

The game is fun as hell. I'm sorry you hate it so much.

Of course I'm assuming most of the people on here hating it haven't even tried it for themselves.

trooper_2223d ago

That's nice.

You think it's fun.

It doesn't change the criticism for the game or the fact that Microsoft can't seem to get their act together.

Sorry.

Bhai2224d ago (Edited 2224d ago )

Yeah darthv72 I figured... Johnny(in your video) said, "there is a lot going right for the game and a lot going wrong for the game"... for any gamer, that's enough to consider that their purchase of the 'final product' is like paying charity instead of receiving a 'present'... that no gamer, esp. in this time and age, wants or deserves.
Moreover he just clarified its not an MMO i.e. not EVEN an MMO!!!... where you can be rewarded for the repetitious sh!te to do, its even less and mindless. So yeah thanks for this review, I really needed a good audience feedback... 'SoT is officially sh!te'!

MrNinosan4d ago

Make a less click baiting headline next time, and people might read bwfore judging.

z2g4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

people don't understand nuance or abstract thought. they just hear two games and decide they like one better than the other so the one they don't like can't be anything close to the one they like. I get that you are speaking in a larger context, not a direct comparison. it could be a huge community building game that has a long burn that could also extend to other platforms and or be cross platform. it could be like sea of thieves in that regard etc. never mind the knuckle draggers on this site. its impossible to have a reasonable, objective conversation here.

I know the headline is a bit bonkers but it is otherwise a good read apart from that.

InUrFoxHole4d ago

Lol you didn't read it. It's just suggesting that it would be beneficial for gamers if HD2 came to xbox. Like sea of thieves did. Don't get in your feels over it.

Magatsuhi4d ago

Its a click bait article. It benefits only xbox to bring a successful game to their failure of a console.

Sea of Thieves Welcomes 40 Million Players

Joe 'Three Sheets' Neate (Executive Producer): "As I’m sure you can imagine, when it comes to Sea of Thieves my days are full of numbers. Development costs, active servers, days until the next update… Sometimes, though, a truly extraordinary number stands out – a number like 40 million, which I’m incredibly pleased to say is the number of pirates who’ve now set sail in Sea of Thieves!"

Crows907d ago (Edited 7d ago )

40 million have set sail...that's great. How many are sailing now? Monthly active users....when it actually matters. How many people purchased the game is another important number.

Gamingsince19817d ago

You don't get numbers like that from MS mouth pieces, they just like to say stuff like "this game was looked at 129 million time, the biggest amount of people browsing a game of this genre on xbox gamepass ever in the last 3 weeks compared to before gamepass was out (small print only 2 million bothered playing longer than 20 seconds and only 100 people are playing it concurrently)

It's all smoke and mirrors

nibblo7d ago

There are usually around 10,000 concurrent users on Steam not counting Xbox or PS but really it doesn't matter as long as there are enough people on the servers to play which there always were and will be for a long time now with the PS players coming on board. Same goes for how many people bought it and how many are on GP, we aren't the accountants of these console companies so why would we care?

Hofstaderman7d ago

Reporting on MAU stats is very misleading. Other companies publish units sold, MS cannot or will not due to Game Pass. We all know that their prior startegies have not panned out so now they have to actually sell games on other consoles. In any case, SoT is doing impressive preorders on PS5 and will very likely motivate Satya to release more games other than the four indicated games on their competitor's consoles. Take note Phil is radio silent....

Jingsing7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Yeah Microsoft would tell you the start menu has had 1 billions clicks on Windows 11 to let you know it is beating Windows 10 when the reality is something else. 10,000 concurrent steam users is enough for me to extrapolate there aren't millions playing this on console either. Lets not forget the motivation to bring this to PS5 is already an admission of poor player count. I'd prefer it is Microsoft would just say nothing when it comes to numbers as it makes them look stupid while trying to make everyone else look like an idiot.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 6d ago
Abear217d ago

40 Mil across Stream, Windows 10, and Xbox. Healthy numbers for sure, but when PC is the biggest platform, I expected more. It’ll be interesting to see how it does on PlayStation. Very well could be double that player count in 6 months with PS too. It’s crazy for developers to skip the most popular platform, not sure why they’d want to, but they must have had their rea$ons.

Christopher7d ago

PC is the market with the most competition for these type of games as well, so it's actually easier to break in on consoles where these games aren't as prominent.
