Nintendo is Releasing Too Many Ports for Switch

While initially, the ports weren't too bad, Nintendo is Releasing Too Many Ports for Switch, as evidenced by their latest Nintendo Direct. They are going overboard.

As much as I love the switch, and they had a fantastic first year, there are way too many ports coming out and to be honest the last direct really rubbed me the wrong way. Smash doesn't make a direct.

JaguarEvolved2228d ago (Edited 2228d ago )

"They're fine. Too many people missed out on these games for the Wii U."

I wasn't born when the n64 was released and I missed playing the games on it as well as a lot of other gamers so Nintendo should port n64 games to the switch also. /s

guywazeldatatt2228d ago

I've never seen this argument before but it's actually crazy valid.

Neonridr2228d ago

tons of amazing N64 games. Would love to see some done as remasters. Donkey Kong 64 would be amazing.

Doge2228d ago

That’s a brilliant idea. Imagine having a dedicated storefront that offers games from previous consoles that could be played on the Switch. It’s like having the game’s Console, only Virtual!

_-EDMIX-_2228d ago

Except you're not really wrong Nintendo has a wealth of intellectual property that would make sense to be put on a system like this.

Gh05t2228d ago

Last time I checked people still want the "Virtual" console so that they CAN play older games.

Jinger2228d ago

This is why they need to release the damn VC and not charge people $40-$60 for damn ports...

mcstorm2228d ago

For me it's not an issue at all. How many remastered games did the PS4 and Xbox one get in there 1st 12 months on sale? Off the top of my head we had halo mcr, uc123, Gta, TLoU im sure there were plenty of others to.

For me I'm happy with the mix of games the switch has.

Shiken2228d ago

That awkward moment when someone fails at trolling so hard, that people actually get excited about what they are trying to troll about.

showtimefolks2228d ago

Jaguar

It's Nintendo so they can't do no wrong and many will defend the full priced ports

zugdar2228d ago

The big problem with the N64/PS1 era is that many of the 3D games have not aged well. Many gamers are used to better cameras, duel stick controls and other features that I don't think they will do as well as people think.

CorndogBurglar2228d ago

As long as ports aren't causing new games to not be released or slowing down development, then I really don't see what the problem is.

I don't know how Nintendo does things, but when Sony and MS do ports and remasters they usually contract them out to 3rd parties. I don't know why Nintendo would be any different.

So knowing that, at the end of the day we all have tons of games that don't interest us that we don't buy. If ports don't interest you, don't buy them. They're just another game that doesn't interest you, right?

But let's not pretend that they have some kind of negative effect on anything. There are still new games being developed and released.

Deep-throat2228d ago

The big problem with those ports is the price tag. Old games for $60.

Sono4212228d ago

I honestly see no problem with them, if they weren't releasing new games as well I would be annoyed, but they are releasing just as many new games as ports, so there is nothing to worry about.

VenomUK2228d ago (Edited 2228d ago )

I wouldn't get too upset by the ports. In the first 8 months of its launch the Switch had two brand new triple-A games released for it, a Zelda and Mario game. Nintendo have confirmed that other loved franchises are coming like Pokemon and Metroid - but they take time to be developed. So what is a good solution is taking some classics from the Wii U and updating them. It had such a small install base so this means there are great games that finally get to be played by a big audience. It also means that Switch owners have a broad selection of games to play until the big franchises release - and that's a good thing!

Concertoine2228d ago

Or in the case of DK, a game that released in 2014 for 49.99 is being resold at 59.99. Ridiculous

_-EDMIX-_2228d ago

Too many games? Who cares? The people who didn't buy the Wii U still probably will like the actual software itself so I don't really see anyone getting hurt by this happening you need to remember that the teams that transfer these games over to other systems are not the teams that are even going to be making games

ie bluepoint games is not making Uncharted 5 or the Last of Us 3.

IamTylerDurden12228d ago

Switch needs these ports. In a perfect world there would've been from the ground up Switch exclusives and an abundance of AAA 3rd party titles from day 1, but that isn't the case.

carcarias2228d ago (Edited 2228d ago )

I don't see this as a problem. In fact, the article itself says it wants more ports, just not the ones the writer, subjectively, thinks are mediocre. The title of this article should simply be 'Nintendo is releasing too many games I'm not interested in' or 'Nintendo need to release more new games'.

The thing is though, it's not as if brand new IPs/games are being held back to make way for ports. Nintendo aren't sitting there saying 'Well, we were gonna release the new Smash this month but we haven't got room in the schedule because we've got Donkey Kong and Hyrule Warriors coming out'. They'll release original stuff as and when it's ready and in the meantime the ports give people more choice.

If you slow the ports down, all you'll have is less games on offer. How does that help anyone? No ones forcing people to buy the ports. The writer is basically arguing for less games on the Switch, an odd thing to want to see for a games console.

dedicatedtogamers2228d ago

I think ports make sense in this case: the Wii U was an utter failure and for a lot of people this is the first chance they'll have to play those games. Bayonetta 2, Captain Toad, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, DK: Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors... these games came out on the Wii U and we all know how that sold.

A good game is a good game. I'm happy with new games too, of course, but I don't mind ports if it means more people can enjoy the game. I'm really curious what sort of genres the Switch needs more of after its first year. I think it did pretty well. My collection is 10 titles strong so far.

nintendoswitchfan2228d ago

They're fine. Too many people missed out on these games for the Wii U.

guywazeldatatt2228d ago

The thing, and someone mentioned this to me, is that the Switch will have the highest ratio of ports than any other system. Simply to make up for their lack of original content for the first half of this year. I mean Captain Toad? It was a solid game but a port of it? Sorry but that just doesn't cut it. Smash Bros. doesn't make a direct. Honestly, I'm playing my Xbox One, believe it or not, more than my Switch right now.

ShottyatLaw2228d ago (Edited 2228d ago )

I get the complaints, but I think Nintendo is following the only logical course of action. That ratio of ports-to-new titles will go down as the library grows, though. We've rarely seen a situation like the Wii U to Switch transition before. The former was a commercial flop and had a short shelf life.

However, Nintendo is sitting on a small pile of great games that didn't sell very well. I think they have to do what they're doing. Plus, no BC means they have to do ports in order to take advantage of that library.

I would still expect a few more ports to come. Mario Maker being the biggest yet to appear. It'll happen, but we'll also see new games outnumber the ports before too long.

guywazeldatatt2228d ago

@ShottyatLaw you do make some good points. I just wish they were spread out a little more. Hopefully E3 will be full of brand new content. One of my biggest problems is the ports being released. There are much better games than Toad to port, among others. I know Zelda is now a seller but Hyrule Warriors is just okay. I'd be okay with Mario Maker and I still want the Zelda games, WW and TP, ported, but only 5 games out of the switch games (or 6) were original games from the direct. I just don't see an excuse for that.

_-EDMIX-_2228d ago

Highest ratio of ports? Please get out of here with that garbage line that's one of the stupidest things I've ever read on here in a while because what you're trying to say is that they're going to have a higher ratio of ports yet you're completely ignoring but on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One you're seeing stuff like burnout remaster or Tomb Raider remaster ore Skyrim assassin's creed and many other multi-platform games on top of first-party Publishers porting some of their older games.

Like I said earlier who cares? It is not going to help this company to have less games on their system especially when they're already missing stuff like the division Destiny Assassin's Creed Mass Effect Battlefield Battlefront Call of Duty Far Cry Red Dead and everything else.

DarXyde2228d ago (Edited 2228d ago )

Wii U had great games that people glossed over. They're also portable now and have more content. Logic behind the ports make sense:

Bayonetta 3 is coming to Switch and Switch now has the entire collection.

Smash coming to Switch is great since the online on Wii U needs work.

Mario Kart 8 gives us a solid party game in the first year.

Skyrim was previously unavailable to Nintendo audiences.

So on, so forth. You don't have to buy them. People said the same thing about PS4's remastered titles to curb delays or gauge interest. In the case of Switch, it does give these games portability, but regardless, you don't have to buy them. And if you play another console in the meantime, great. That's a benefit of owning multiple.

The Switch is fine. I feel like you frequently publish these pieces for controversy.

RosweeSon2228d ago (Edited 2228d ago )

You could always play your Xbox one specially if your sucked into one of its many yearly churns that doesn’t be mean anything you could just be playing Fifa all year and missing gaming greatness elsewhere hey ho ;) enjoy. Nintendo just doing what Sony did make sure the games keep coming thick and fast i mean it’s nitnlike DMC collection or burnout paradise just launched on PS4 in last couple of weeks brand new games? no.
They’ll have potted all top Wii U games by end of this year and then be on to Brand new ones again if half as good as the ones they’ve released so far we’re in for some more gaming gold.

Kosic2228d ago (Edited 2228d ago )

How many developers are actually making games for the switch?
How long does a game take to be made?
If people are going to complain about a lack of titles. Then having these ports fill that wait is the best thing you can do....

Nintendo is also using this opportunity to keep content coming without the long droughts the Wii U faced. It's much quicker to port them over than to bring all new titles.

guywazeldatatt2228d ago

I don't disagree with this and I was fine with ports with the mini direct, but the last direct really turned me off. I still love my Switch, but it's just too much, IMO. That's just me though. There are some ports I'd be fine with, but just space them out with some original content, even ports that are coming out the same time as the other consoles.

Xenophon_York2228d ago

DarkLink is just posting more lame, desperate opinion pieces—that he likely wrote himself. Pair that with a worse fact: That he hijacks these posts after sumbitting his story to N4G, and you get a deep sense of DarkLink's pitiful method of operation.

Cobra9512228d ago

"Too many people missed out on these games for the Wii U"

Why don't people get this simple truth? Many of us skipped the Wii U entirely. I would love to see all good games from that system make an appearance on the Switch. They'd be first-time purchases for many Switch owners, and they would help sell the system even more. Don't want the ports? Don't buy them. It's so simple. Nobody loses, and many of us win.

I was ok with the ports for a long time, Tropical Freeze is like the pinnacle of 2D platformers for me and Bayo 2 is an action masterpiece, so I'm glad those two are getting a second chance -- but Captain bloody Toad? Who the hell asked for that?

I was really hoping for a Pikmin 4 reveal at E3, but now I'm thinking they're gonna announce Pikmin 3 Switch before 4. Hopefully it will stop at Captain Toad, but if that got the OK, then I have to imagine they're also at least considering 3D World and the Zelda remasters too. Really hope not.

guywazeldatatt2228d ago

I don't mind TWW HD and TP HD, because I want a Zelda collection, but, Captain Toad is ridiculous. Tropical Freeze deserves it because like you said it is one of the best 2D platformers ever. Bayo 2, with Bayo 3 on the way, deserves it as well. But they are going a bit overboard just because, I feel, they have nothing to release.

Even Hyrule Warriors, which I enjoyed, shouldn't get a port. And if Smash shows one glimpse of being a port I may as well lose it.

TekoIie2228d ago

"but, Captain Toad is ridiculous."

Not really because people were actually asking for it. I've made comments on this site for it and others have agreed.

I've even seen it mentioned by Greg Miller on a panel around when the Switch launched asking for a Treasure Tracker port so it was definitely being asked for.

ZaWarudo2228d ago

I want more Wii U ports. Not like anyone actually bought a Wii U.

guywazeldatatt2228d ago

which ones, in particular? I'm just curious. There are some that I want, like Xenoblade X and the Zelda games, but beyond that I'm not sure.

Zeldafan642228d ago (Edited 2228d ago )

Super Mario 3D World needs another chance in the spotlight.

ZaWarudo2228d ago

Xenoblade X, Fatal Frame 5, Wonderful 101, that weird Fire Emblem SMT crossover game.

i bought one. It was a great system that no one had faith in. Its also the one reason why I wont buy a switch cause I already own all the games for the wii u.

Heelix2228d ago

There's no such thing as too much content
What you might not be okay with
Someone else will appreciate

It's not all about one
It's about an audience.

If code princes is getting a second chance on switch
Bring Kid Icarus Uprising!

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos1h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto29m ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger8814m ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).
