Nintendo Switch Took Only Four Weeks to Sell Over 500,000 Units in Japan Against Seven Weeks for PS4

Nintendo Switch is selling faster than PS4 in Japan during its debut month, but slower than the Wii U.

The topic here is that the Wii U sold better then the Switct in same period. Something that i tought wouldnt happend with Zelda at launch.

The question is what kind of number would the Wii U got with Zelda at launch????

CocoaBrother2583d ago

Refer to Neonridr's comment. Both PS4 and Wii U launched during Japanese holiday; Switch did not.

Also take into account Nintendo manufactured a lot more Wii U consoles than Switch at launch and it bit them in the butt profit-wise.
Even in the U.K, once stock was coming back, sales saw an increase by 50%, similar to Japan.

Nintendo needs to keep production up and have release dates for Splatoon 2, Monster Hunter, Pokémon, and Animal Crossing. The Japanese market loves those series.

Abriael2583d ago

That's partly correct and partly incorrect. Wii U launched during the Japanese Holiday season. PS4 did not. Not even close.

CocoaBrother2583d ago

Abriael caught my mistake; PS4 released February while Wii U was November. Thanks for the catch

naruga2583d ago (Edited 2583d ago )

i say cool for them ....now they can wait for their console to gather dust in a box like Wii and Wii U before it (which also sold far better when they launched ....

TheUndertaker852583d ago

I also don't know why PS4 sales should matter with it being a home console with the Switch labeled a handheld. The handheld market and the console market are two very different things, particularly in Japan.

It should then be slightly telling that a Nintendo console which is considered a massive flop and less portable managed to move more in a region looking for portability.

Further there were stories of shortages of Wii U.
https://mynintendonews.com/...
http://www.ign.com/boards/t...

As for overproduction causing lost profits, what a load. Every Wii U console was sold at a profit. The price didn't even drop much due to component cost and Nintendo admitting they wanted profit, not success. A replacement GamePad is $150+ from Nintendo. Then oddly you suggest Nintendo can ail the situation by producing more which you list as an issue in the previous statement.

Abriael2583d ago

@TheUndertaker85: the Switch is labeled as a home console by Nintendo.

2583d ago
TheUndertaker852583d ago

@Abriael: I'm sure it is with Wii U going down the toilet but 3DS still moving.

Doesn't really matter what they call it. The Switch was built to be more portable than Wii U, a selling point so far. Japan prefers portable. Logically Switch in Japan should be moving more than Wii U due to being more portable. There's no way to dodge it when a less portable product from the same company moved more in a region wanting portability.

Further PS4 is a console. Sony doesn't have to clarify it. So you're talking numbers of a console versus numbers of a handheld in a region dominated by handheld devices. Switch by default should be selling more there.

Monster_Tard2583d ago (Edited 2583d ago )

@TheUndertaker85
So the Ps4 sales shouldn't matter because it's home console, but the Wii U should despite it also being a home console? That doesn't make much sense.

"It should then be slightly telling that a Nintendo console which is considered a massive flop and less portable managed to move more in a region looking for portability."

Considering the Wii U also outsold the PS4 in this region within this time frame, it's not telling at all.

TheUndertaker852583d ago

Then there's a handheld device from Sony available in Japan not listed in this article that's moved over 5 million units in Japan while Wii U only managed a little over 3.2 million in the region. PS4 managed more coming out over a year after Wii U.

We also know that Switch isn't the top selling handheld or console worldwide. It was being said that Switch was Nintendos fastest selling console. Now it isn't. It's really not doing anything fantastically or even to the level of others.

Point being I suppose the more news like this releases the more it's clear facts and statistics aren't present then half of what Nintendo representatives are saying is total bullshit made to make their device look more attractive than it actually is.

TheUndertaker852583d ago

@Monster_Tard: What I'm saying is using factors to your advantage, knowing they exist then blatantly leaving that part of the story out to make a device seem more attractive is sad. Further what I'm saying is statistically this story was written to be skewed into a pretty picture it's not.

Wii U had better sales than Switch in the same period. Wii U is a Nintendo product with less portability than Switch. Japan is ruled by mobile devices. What is not mentioned is the 3.2 million total that Wii U barely reached with a better launch statistically.

In other words these reports are creating hype they can't hope to satisfy as evidence from other Nintendo products show abysmal sales with a better start. Then by pure specifications Wii U & Switch are more handheld than console. I'd imagine a handheld device or something offering handheld functionality would outsell a device that doesn't in a region dominated by handhelds. Same reason why Switch should be outselling Wii U there.

Monster_Tard2583d ago (Edited 2583d ago )

@TheUndertaker85
I think you're just overthinking it and maybe taking it a little bit personal because they're comparing it to the PS4, the article is merely comparing it in the same region and time frame to sales of Nintendo's last home console and the home console that is currently leading the market (PS4), if they were trying to make it look more attractive, then why would they mention that the Wii U outsold it within the same time frame? These numbers aren't very far from each other and again considering that the Wii U outsold the Ps4 in the same time frame, it's not very telling, seeing how the Wii U ended up as Nintendo's worst selling console and the PS4 currently dominating the market.

The ps4 did not launch in Japan during the holidays, rather it was launched early 2014 (February). So it is similar to that of the switch.

On the other hand, the Wii U launched December 8 2012 and enjoyed the end of year and festive sales.

Well the Wii U had Monster Hunter Tri and Dragon Quest X. In it's first month so that kinda why.

corroios2583d ago (Edited 2583d ago )

that also a huge launch for a console on Japan. Maybe, even better

The 10th Rider2583d ago

That's are far better launch titles for Japan than Zelda. Zelda typically isn't a massive seller in Japan.

Erik73572583d ago (Edited 2583d ago )

Wiiu and even ps4 had advantage of launching in a month where they sell more.

Told everyone this console would sell well.

Utalkin2me2583d ago

So the PS4 launching on February 22 is a advantage how? So if February the 22nd is advantage then surely less then 2 weeks later is also a advantage.

georeo2583d ago

You never make sense in what you say. Every time I see a comment of yours,(defending Nintendo) your thumbs down is off the charts.

-Foxtrot2583d ago

Selling roughly the same as the Wii U is selling well....lol

@ Cocoa & Erik

PS4 launched during February in Japan. Do some damn research before posting

eagle212583d ago

Or if Nintendo would of shipped more the first week.

Amorist892583d ago

Agreed, without Zelda, Nintendo sales would of taken a massive hit.

2583d ago
davand1142583d ago

Not only did the wiiu launch during the holidays, Nintendo thought the wiiu would be popular because of the wii name and had like 6 million units available at launch which is more than the ps4 and the switch had combined. It also took them like 6 months to sell through the launch consoles.

indysurfn2583d ago (Edited 2583d ago )

Read the article that is not the topic here it is it outsold the PS4 in that amount of time. Plus the article say's the reason wiiu was so high was because it released during the holiday season. Not the slower part of the season.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2583d ago

Switch was $299 at launch
PS4 was $399 at launch

Switch is $100 cheaper. Mystery solved. Thank you and good day.

NecoTehSergal2583d ago

If the Wii U sold better than Switch - and Switch had Zelda to launch with - all this reaffirms is unlike the Hype many are trying to create, Switch can easily become just another Wii U in terms of Total launch sales of an abysmal 13 Million - Switch likely, in my eyes, being 10-20 million max.

Everyone is so excited and hoping Nintendo to succeed, I feel alone here thinking that it'd serve the industry better that Nintendo fails in this generation too. Nintendo needs to learn a lesson from their attitude and arrogance, just as Sony learned with PS3's launch.

Neonridr2583d ago

Wii U and PS4 did release closer to Japan's holidays. So these numbers alone are very encouraging. Nintendo just needs to get a Pokemon, Monster Hunter or Yokai Watch game on the Switch and sales will take off in Japan.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory2583d ago (Edited 2583d ago )

No. The PS4 came out in February 22, 2014 in Japan. Wii U came out December 8, 2012 in Japan.
So that can only apply to the Wii U.

Neonridr2583d ago

ahh sorry.. I thought the PS4 came out the same time in Japan as the US. My bad, thanks for correcting me.

Erik73572583d ago (Edited 2583d ago )

Well no also, the ps4 still came out in a better month for consoles. Even if you still want to disbelieve that, you cenrtainly can't say switch came out in a month that sells better for console and it outsold it in 4 weeks.

2583d ago
FallenAngel19842583d ago

After launch PS4 was doing relative abysmal numbers in comparison to PS3 in Japan

COMMENT-OF-THE-YEAR2583d ago

Japan is the smallest region putting up half the numbers us and Europe does. I just hope the Switch doesn't frizzle out like the Wii u did. It's going to need one hell of a line up to go toe to toe with PlayStation in it's 4th year.

eagle212583d ago

I guess Reggie was right, it's breaking records everyday..lol

Fonso1282583d ago

Reggie is a troll running his mouth. The Switch is at the honey mood phase because Zelda is a great game. I wonder how the switch will do in April.

meganick2583d ago

Probably quite well with Mario Kart releasing in April.

-Foxtrot2583d ago

@meganick

If anyone is going to buy a port with a battle mode we should have had in a free update for the Wii U and some new maps/characters then I pity them.

I3loggs242583d ago

@meganick
Mario Kart releases May 29.

Moonman2583d ago

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe releases worldwide April 28th 2017. End of story..lol

seraphym882582d ago

That's funny, coming from a troll running his mouth.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory2583d ago (Edited 2583d ago )

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos1h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto1h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger8853m ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).
