The fact that it was even that close isn't a great sign for Nintendo. Japan is overwhelmingly pro-portable, I would have thought it would have been like a 10 to 1 difference since the Switch is portable.

Well of course if you consider how the Japanese feel about their Portables.

Switch is selling well, but only because it just released and the usual diehard Nintendo fans are always going to buy Nintendo products at launch. The real future of the Switch will be determined by the sales for the rest of this year; once the early adopters drop off, the numbers are going to crash hard. 3rd party developers just aren't really interested in supporting the Switch.

Im more concerned about long term sales.

well it's one of the first consoles ever to release with a near perfect game at launch like is anyone surprised? the real question is if they can maintain this success.

Couple factors to consider before taking this as some huge bragging right: 1) PS4 has a very rough start there; next to none of its games appealed to JP audiences until almost a year in. 2) Japan is very devoted to mobile, much more so than any other market.

Just looking at those, I'm surprised it's not doing better.

Unsurprising, PS4 is a home console and the Switch, despite Nintendo claiming otherwise, is a handheld and handhelds dominate the Japanese market. Hopefully with the success of the Switch, Sony re-enter the market with a Vita successor.

It's not surprising, the PS4 is $100 more expensive than the switch when it first came out. Also, Nintendo brand is more popular in Japan than PlayStation.

Well it is known thing that Japan is handheld market. Everybody expected that. It is just how they function in gaming. The dont do home console nearly as much as they do handheld

The switch has a fantastic future, With a great start I hope Nintendo keep up the momentum and deliver at E3:)

PS4 sold mediocre in Japan until more recently though.

I think its awesome the switch is doing so good saleswise. Also i think this product should be seen as a true handheld and console second, even though Nintendo sayd otherwise. The moment u begin to see the switch as a 3ds successor and not as a dedicated home console, you'll like it even more! At least this is the case for me.

Sony can kiss being the market leader in Japan goodbye now that Switch is launched. Nintendo will wipe the floor with them there as this system has made for the Japanese market written all over it.

Don't understand why this always has to turn into a sony vs Nintendo thing? In my opinion they can be and are sister systems. When I want to do my core gaming I do it on PS4. When I want something a little different and quirky and play the franchises I get up on and on the go I'll do it on switch. This isn't like PS4/xbone war where they are directly competing with each other. Nintendo has gone out of their way to be the "other" system. And I can't put my finger on I think but there's something about the switch that make sure me think it can Nintendo best system since the N64.

You can only sell what is available to sell. The switch would have outsold the wii u easily but there just is not the stock on the shelves.

Wow! Fantastic sales but it's no console it's just a tablet with a Nintendo badge and iffy controllers. If developers took there time they could make similar games on high end tablets. Imo.

Game shop around other Asia country is buying up Japan switch console , because is too expensive form local authorized distributor that the reason is doing well in Japan is the cheapest console price in Asia region.

Japanese are more of a mobile market, of course it's selling good there.

People are failing to address that Japan has always favored mobile gaming devices, the switch is a better fit for the Japanese marketplace.

whatever the numbers - i kind of don't care. As end user I see close to NO AAA games at the moment but Zelda, which I have finishe on Wii U.

Not surprised Nintendo usually does well at home and the Japanese market is more about mobile and has been for a while now, which makes sense as the main mode of travel is trains and buses.

Switch won't sell as much as PS4 it will be no where near
