It’s Foolish To Chase This Small Slice of 4K Market, Says Pachter On PS4 Pro’s Lack Of Native 4K

The PS4 Pro will definitely be unable to run games in native 4K resolution most of the time- it's simply not powerful enough to do so for modern high-end AAA games. Microsoft's Scorpio, meanwhile, professes to deliver true 4K gaming, when it launches next year.

Kingthrash3602734d ago (Edited 2734d ago )

What is true 4k?
Does it mean native 4k?
If so then both will have "true 4k"
What's with this..... people getting to Trump's level of ignorance.
Ps4 pro has multiple native 4k game hell nba2k17 is native 4k+ hdr+ 60fps...so unless "true 4k" means something I don't know please explain.

If it means ever games running native 4k...then the scorpio has already been proven and confirmed not to run "true 4k"
Seems the close the pro gets the more bs is shown

Green gangsta chill bro. I'm getting embarrassed just reading that list of names. Almost cringy. Do you also chant their names while performing vodoo/satanic rituals? It's just a console. It's embarrassing how some of you make it your life's mission to prove your "superiority" on something you had no part on making.

I feel so bad for you...

When people say Sony has the worst fanboys I want everyone to read green_gansta9 post :) this guy has a hit list, everyone on that list should be concerned damn I probably got added to the list ahwell.

mikeslemonade2734d ago

It's about playing the games on acceptable settings. I don't even play 4k or 2k on my 980ti. I like to turn up the settings with 1080p.

LOL I'm pro-PS4. Love that I'm on the list.

mark_parch2734d ago

im confused, so now patcher is basically saying there's no point in buying a ps4 pro. if everyone is still gaming on 1080p tv's does ps4 pro offer enough benefits?

DarXyde2734d ago

Septic,

You should probably read and interpret things more carefully.

No one is saying resolution doesn't matter (though, if anything, that's more of my personal argument. I'd take frame rate any day). He's saying that no one needs a 4K machine right now.

And you know what? He's right. More people will have 4K by the time Scorpio hits, but it's still likely to be a niche market. Besides, Scorpio need not chase 4K if it uses the extra horsepower for other things.

In fact, I'd rather they did.

snoopgg2734d ago

fiveby92733d ago

@Septic. Well 4K doesn't really matter if one doesn't own a 4K display. So yea your're right 4K doesn't matter just yet. I am not running out to buy a new display just for console gaming. Sure once I own a 4K display it may matter. Difference here is PS4 support higher resolution out of the gate and didn't require additional display purchase for most people.

I like PatcherI but I disagree, I upgraded to a 4k tv in anticipation of the PS pro
I immediately saw a difference between my old 1080p TV and 4k.
Everything is much more crisp and clear in just an upscale (standard) PS4 image, I can only imagine how much better the Pro will look on a 4k TV. I don't have cable so I can't speak to upscale broadcast TV..

(Added)
I recognized Pachter's statements from this article from an episode of Pachter Factor that I watched a couple weeks ago, in which Patcher said that there is not enough 4k content to justify getting a 4k TV. What I meant in the above statement was that even 1080 games look much better on a 4k TV..

Thatguy-3102734d ago

he's referring to a small slice of the market you got yourself in. He's not saying it's not a big jump he's just saying that 4k isn't mainstream enough at this point for it to be a big factor in someone picking a console over the other. I'm sure yourself and the others that have 4k displays will enjoy the difference it makes with these new systems.

Eonjay2734d ago

The thing I find most frustrating about 4k is knowing which sets are actually good for gaming. So on one hand people keep saying that they are getting cheaper... but if you look at the prices of the 'recommend' gaming TVs... yeah, they are still high.

freshslicepizza2734d ago

When the ps3 came out the Blu-ray and 1080p market was small at the time too. In a few years I expect the 4k market to grow substantially. Sony is also chasing the same market but their priority was to keep the ps4 price down after the ton of money they lost in the beginning of the ps3.

mike32UK2734d ago (Edited 2734d ago )

And this is why its great that Sony anew Microsoft are offering 4k gaming as an option before its mainstream, they're pushing for innovation and making the market far more interesting. In the process, they're preventing the market from stagnating.

DefenderOfDoom22734d ago (Edited 2734d ago )

Question for jronj > What screen size 4k did you buy ? I heard, to really notice the difference between 1080p and 4k they recommend that people should buy a 4k tv no smaller than 55 inches . Just curious , thanks.

zombiewombie2734d ago

I got a 43 inch and i can see the difference.

Eldyraen2734d ago (Edited 2734d ago )

Part of it depends on viewing distance too. 1080p and 1440p on my monitor was huge for example (27"). If you sit close sub 50" there will still be a nice boost (closer to 50 the better) but not necessarily as much (or the same kind).

However, the truth is (imo), games actually see a bigger boost in resolution than tv/movies. Video Playback is in a constant motion (unless you pause) and is recorded and not rendered like a game so you can overlook resolution that much more. Resolution can make a HUGE difference in games though as a 4K output (or even 1440p) makes all movement that much crisper (as its rendered and not recorded--think of it as in-game versus in-engine pre rendered cutscenes) and clears up all that small detail and especially moving parts (grass and leaves) without utilizing AA at all. For smaller screens, 4K will clean up some things (most likely) but still not as be as detail rich as a bigger screen (as it's simply a smaller screen and details will be harder to see given the same viewing distance per screen size comparison).

I don't know if you get what I'm trying to say, but there should still be a cleaner picture (for games that support 4K of course) besides pure pixel count as in motion there is that extra bonus for games from resolution and screen size.

It is a waste of resources to go 4k native, specially if the game is aiming for 60 fps, said by the devels of one of the best games of this year ( technically and gameplay-wise) Doom. Reconstruction will be widely used even on Scorpio.

lelo2play2734d ago (Edited 2734d ago )

I guess you wouldn't mind playing games like Uncharted, Forza, Battlefield, etc at 480p (or below), as long as they run 60fps?

4k native is not a waste of resources. That's like saying PC games are a waste of resources because they have various resolutions.

Darkwatchman2734d ago (Edited 2734d ago )

Let's put it this way. Rise of the tomb raider on pro can either run at 4k(not sure the actual native resolution used, but it's not native 4K) with the exact same assets as the ps4/Xbox one versions of the game or at 1080p with much better assets and effects.

The console versions fall in line with the pc's medium setting and the enhanced visuals mode will match the pc's Max settings. I'd rather have 1080p with Max settings than 4K at medium settings. It is a waste of resources to render such a high resolution when the assets aren't high enough quality to do the resolution justice.

Developers should chase better framerate, textures, geometry, etc...before they chase for native 4K.

Like I'd rather play a ps4 game at 1080p than a vita game at native 4K. I think everyone would. The game's actual visuals are more important than chasing native 4K resolution and this is coming from a guy that's about to get a 4K tv tomorrow.

yomfweeee2734d ago

Your 480p or below thing is a terrible comparison. There is a vast difference in 480p vs 1080p than there is between 1080p and 4K when it comes to what the human eye is capable of seeing.

freshslicepizza2734d ago

But the ps4 pro isn't really chasing better frame rates either. In fact the Pro will not help games at all unless the developers update their games. The Xbox One S does bump performance even if it is minor in some cases without the need for developers having to update the games.

Eldyraen2734d ago

As Yom said, 480p and 1080p is a massive difference compared to 1080p and 4K (and in most circumstances 1440-1900p "up scaled" in the case of Pro/Scorpio) for an average person (i.e. Consumers in this case--tv size/viewing distance will be a big factor in if you can discern the difference really at the higher end of the resolution spectrum).

For example, at 27" my monitor had a clear difference in 1080p to 1440p simply because it cleared up so much of the moving parts (grass and leaves especially) but from a purely pixel count perspective the difference was small as the number of pixels are already so many it doesn't make a big difference in discerning one from the other (on a static image especially given relatively similar screen size and the same viewing distance).

In motion the difference is clear as day though. That is the main reason I like high resolution as even better AA can't really compete with a significant boost to resolution. Crysis back in the day at 1080p was so much better looking than 720p with 16x aa (and ran better). Higher res works the same--you don't need as much AA the higher you go and at 4K it's basically just if you have extra power to waste because why not?

Darkwatchman2734d ago

@Moldybread

Yes it is. Case in point, both modes of tomb raider I talked about will be a locked 30. There's also a high framerate mode that removes the cap and keeps the regula ps4 assets so the game can target 60. So yeah. There will be better framerates. They'll vary from game to game in terms of the difference, but if the standard ps4 version targets 30 for a single player game and has dips in intense scenes, you bet your ass the pro version will be a perfectly locked 30 even if it doesn't go for 60fps.

Sparta072734d ago

It's a waste when a very SMALL maket has 4k tvs. Out of all my friends ( xbox and PS4 owners ) I'm the only one with a 4k tv. And they are not in a rush to get rid of their hd tv just to upgrade to a 4k tv.

2734d ago
rainslacker2734d ago

I played many games like that at 480p or even below over the years, and never had a problem with it. When people first got their PS3's or 360's, many of them didn't have 1080, or even 720 sets, and they were fine with it.

I don't think native 4K is a waste of resources, it's just the market isn't big enough for the companies to go all out on providing it across the board.

Which is basically what Patcher is saying...that the market isn't big enough now to really spend that much time focusing on it.

For the most part, developers are going to feel the same way. Maybe by the end of the gen, we'll see more 4K pushes, and certainly right at the launch of the consoles, but long haul, 4K would be wasted effort for most people because most don't have 4K displays.

Former Blizzard President Suggests Players Should Have Option to Tip Developers

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently suggested an interesting concept that has sparked a debate among gamers - the idea of being able to tip developers after completing a game.

LG_Fox_Brazil5d ago

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer19925d ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop4d ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom4d ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor4d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog4d ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit4d ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

No, it would go to those on the top. They will still fire developers, have a bunch of microtransactions, raise prices of games and so on.

Ireland is literally the first stop across the pond and we don't have a tipping culture. The only establishments here that would expect a tip are the tourist haunts that Americans visit. Other than that, you might tip in a restaurant as a sign of gratitude for great service and waiting staff would be paid a full wage anyway.

The Reason Sega Lost The 32-Bit War? The 32X, Says Yosuke Okunari

"The company was unable to focus enough on its main hope"

timeextension.com
ApocalypseShadow9d ago

Nope. Going back to the 32X as the reason Sega lost that generation doesn't go back far enough before the Saturn.

Sega executives need to blame themselves as to why Sega lost that generation. Not Saturn. Not 32X. Not Sega CD. Nope. Executives were the reason why. It wasn't the hardware. Those devices were either dropped early or released to soon resulting in a developer backlash the hurt the game catalog. They really shouldn't have been made at all because they should have planned their next move more carefully. It has nothing to do with the devices. Poor leadership decisions and lack of unity within the company are what happened.

Love how blame is always shifted away from what is the truth. Writing a book placing the blame on the 32X isn't the truth.

solideagle9d ago

I am pretty sure there are documentaries (Youtube) around it which highlights these points. I had Sega Mega drive and NES growing up but that's about it.
