The way Microsoft handled the 55% failure rate was brutal. Yes it actually got to 55%.I would say it was a good console. Great is definitely an over estimation for a console that over heated for the first 4 years and finished last for it's generation.

Love the statistics that PS fanboys come up with when talking about Xbox, any old crap is true if it suits there agenda...... 360 sales went through the roof long after the RROD issue.... but do not let that get in the way.... also, plenty of sequels on PS3, but lets just talk about Tlou........ and the remaster.... and the remastered remaster.....

Lol at the attack force. It was a whole generation ahead of its competition in the online arena. Heck actually, even the OG Xbox was lol.

The 360 was a great console. The rrod was crappy and the tail end was weak but it had its strengths and the big one was the online space.

It schooled the competition in thst regard and Sony followed the 360 in a lot of what it did with the PS4.

@Pogmathoin I preferred the 360 over the PS3 but my 360s died on me multiple times. I have 3 broken Xbox 360s (2 fats and 1 slim) sitting in my room.The statistics are just about right, the failure rate of the 360 was too damn high.

It was hilarious that the writer said only thousands of 360 consoles fell victim to the RRoD. Then it goes on to say the 360 thrived in spite of that. The reality of the situation was that there were far more than "thousands" of consoles that fell victim to it. MS' own numbers of spending over a billion to correct the issues confirm that it was far more than "thousands" of consoles, and that over a billion figure didn't take into account all of the consoles that were outside of warranty that failed or those who just didn't bother to go through the replacement shenanigans & just jumped ship or bought a new console.

To say that it sold those numbers "in spite of" those issues completely disregards the reality that it sold those numbers partly "because of" those issues. Even ardent Xbox fans on here will admit to owning upwards of 3-5 360s during its cycle after failures.

If we are talking sales, the PS3 & 360 were neck and neck worldwide, if you eliminated the repurchases from the RRoD, PS3 would've handily grabbed the lead w/ millions more sold.

Plain & simple the 360 made some great strides w/ Live, but it also introduced the idea of a paid subscription so that's to be expected. Beyond that, it was a solid yet unspectacular console. Best Xbox for sure, but "last great console"? Not a chance. 360 may have had the edge in performance for multiplats but Sony absolutely destroyed all competitors when it comes to exclusive software, in numbers & in quality. That much can be shown through actual hard data & high review scores. The nebulous idea of "last great console" is absolutely subjective & unquantifiable.

Are you talking about in terms of paying to play? In that case, then yeah I guess? PS3 & 360 had nearly identical features in the online arena, Live just happened to be the more stable of the two. Ultimately 360 was an mp machine. If you are an mp gamer then it was great for you, if you cared for offline or unique experiences, that failure rate & lack of exclusives you are brushing under the rug were absolutely glaring.

hardly even a 'great' console...just occupied a space in which it was the lesser of evils for a window of time...Still blows me away that MS gets credit for it...literally every thing that console accomplished was handed to them, and what was 'earned' was merely money hat'd...the announcement of the Xbox One is 100% proof that they had no idea how the 360 became popular....and as soon as the Wii, and the rift it caused in modern gaming, subsided...balance has been restored...

seriously...the freaking pos was like $299 when PS3's were still more than the PS4's launch price...and the only other option was a Wii...weirdest generation i've lived through, that's for sure...but I would never consider the 360 a great console...it just happened to slot in to a spot when everyone else lost their minds for a little bit...

And before anyone asks... Yes there is a segment in the gaming community that is into collecting more than one of the same thing. I will say that the 360 (in particular) made it really hard to collect all the variants but I did get some of the better looking ones.

Don't invite a list war over which console had more exclusives, or more new IP's. PS fans will tear you down pretty quick, and what they provide will be 100% accurate no matter how you try to move around the goal posts.

Yes, it was a pretty good console. So was the PS3. But the last great console? That's a pretty big stretch. Not as much as "king of consoles", or "greatest console of all time", but still, it's kind of a stupid statement to make, and highly speculative since no one knows what's to come.

Unforutunately, we'll never really know the real numbers, or how it accurately affected sales. We can always speculate based on evidence or anecdotal data, and make assumptions from other things.

Kind of a shame MS wasn't using active users as a metric last gen, because then it would actually help us know how the Xbox was doing the whole time. Active users is really one of the two numbers that publishers care about. Actual number sold is rather arbitrary for them, since it says nothing about active install base or sales potential.

Do you have any documentation or official statement to suggest the failure rate was that high? I actually went through 2 Xbox 360s, but I'm not convinced the failure rate was THAT high.

Anyway, it started the generation strong and introduced some great ideas: achievements, great controller, robust online. Great ideas and Sony was playing catch up for a good part of the generation.

....however, PS3 still featured support for achievements in the form of trophies, so it's not really a win for Xbox. Great new feature, and we're all better for it, but that's a shared feature now. PS3 offered free online (though still an infant compared to Xbox Live), standardized HDDs in gaming consoles (can't really give that credit to Xbox since the 360 launched with and without it), and introduced game sharing along with PlayStation Plus (which is perhaps as null as achievements and trophies since both answered the other's efforts with their own). Xbox 360 was a great console for bringing social gaming to the forefront as we know it today, but I think it was the PS3 that had gamers trying something new for their libraries and expanded what we may like with PlayStation Plus. You likely bought an Xbox 360 with games to play with your friends. Additionally, you likely bought a PlayStation 3 with game sharing in mind. Either way, your interests potentially piggyback your social circle because it had benefits. Both did wonders for gaming and their offerings did not disappoint.

I'd say it's debatable which was more successful, so I will say PS3 might be the last great console based on the fact that it released after the Xbox 360, thus, making it more fitting of being the "last". It's a technicality in the most literal sense, but if it's debatable, the tie had to broken somehow.

@Septic How so? You are right, PS4 has taken some things from 360 and these are the reasons PS4 sucks this gen compared to what PS3 was. Required sub to play online, awkward headset support rather than allowing ANY bluetooth or usb headset to work like on PS3 (its still better since Xbone at launch though but that little bit of 360ness could have been avoided), can't store videos on the console's hard drive. Those are some of the reasons why PS4 sucks.
Xbone has bluray, mandatory disc installs, a better reason to be paying a subscription and getting free games without having to wait 8 years to get that privilege like on 360, Live on Xbone supports big multiplayer games like Resistance Fall of Man's 40 player support at the launch of PSN or Resistance 2's 60 player support in 2008, no size limitations on how large a demo, patch or downloadable game can be, finally supports current gen MMOs (I know FFXI was on 360 but it was also on PS2 so not sure if that is something you want to say is impressive or not), they put a 3.5mm input onto the Xbone controller following PS3's awesome openness with what accessories you AREN'T forced to use with the console, recently they have announced that they have opened up Live to be cross platform without any forced Windows Vista or 10 crap and even Keyboard and Mouse support a couple of months ago. These are ALL things the PS3 has been doing for years and all things the 360 absolutely failed on (without even going into rip off Wifi addons that even the Wii had built in and battery packs for controllers or hardware failures).
Everything that is awesome about Xbone and why it is actually a console I would buy any day over a 360 is because of all the PS3esque things it can do, NOT 360.

And that is why these articles saying ridiculous things about the 360 are just hilarious.

In my opinion if it weren't for RROD and paid online they would have beat out PS3 last-gen. They really had something going. The first native HD console, better graphics, mostly, first wireless controllers(also, six-axis was trash IMO), and better online. PS3 had more exclusives but it's all shovelware IMO.

Sadly they kind of ran into another fiasco with Kinect and being underpowered. However if it weren't for the power difference and FFVIIR I'd be buying Xbox One. I'm really hoping FFVIIR has no functions that require the touchpad, because I really want to use an Xbox One controller to play that game(with an adapter).

I've never really been a fan of Uncharted, the humor and action just doesn't get me, God of War is too stoic, not very imaginative, Jak seems like a second place platformer to Mario, and fps games are better with X1 controller IMO.

I'm kind of on the fence with X1 as they're also trying to modernize JRPG with Scalebound and Recore(and last gen, a true successor to Final Fantasy, Lost Odyssey). Only problem is Scalebound has douchey dubstep and not much is known about Recore. If Sakaguchi comes forth with a new JRPG on X1 again, I might just be tempted to buy one. Also, the only two games I could care to buy on PS3, FFvXIII and The Last Guardian, are PS4 games now, so I could never give PS3 the credit. 360 was much better IMO, aside from the RROD and paid online. JRPGs aside, TLOU and Uncharted are shovelware compared to Halo and Gears.

This is all coming from someone only buying PS4 so far this gen.

Rainslacker, I have never said Xbox had more exclusives than PS. Just mention Xbox, and there's a fanboy with an instant list on hand, pretty sad. I just point out that Xbox is not just Halo, Gears and Forza.

We420, your replacement xbox does not count as new sales. Yeah, sure, it was not nice, but
I got 3 years out of my day one, it broke, got replacement, eventually gave to my son, got slim....

Bottom line, many consoles in the past brought something new, and 360, definitely ushered in the era we are in now. PS3 did not have identity for its first few years, but it did eventually find its groove, when Sony figured that they should listen to gamers, not dictate them..... And we have seen that scenario repeat elsewhere....

The PS3 may have took a couple years to reach it's full potential and found it's "identity", but XBox has never had an identity, just using 3rd party exclusives to hold it afloat with an exclusive here and there, while copying what Sony does. Nintendo has it's own identity and so does Sony. MS has never found or established their identity in the console space, sadly. Until it does, it won't hold a candle to Sony or Nintendo.

Console hardware was crap but it did a lot of things right as well. Overall I preferred my PS3 in the end but only because all of the issues with MS being excessively exploitative even for a corporation and the all the stress and frustration I had to go through with hardware issues. If MS simply implemented a no lemon policy and didn't go overboard with paywalls, I (and my friends) may have had an xb1 this gen instead of a PS4. Requiring a $60 a year Gold subscription to access internet explorer, which is free everywhere, pretty much made me hate xbox. I couldn't believe how cheap one of the richest companies in the world could be; pay to use netflix and IE was absolutely the greediest thing I've ever experienced from a corporation. It actually tarnished MS as a whole in my eyes and pushed me towards using Apple and Google before MS any chance I could get. The thought of xbox still evokes negative emotions. Thinking of my 13.7 gig white 360 still makes me feel a bit sad. I was so excited when I got it, then had to face so many issues with each refurb going from bad to worse. I essentially paid full price for someones elses dirt used console. MS made me their bitch. They had my money and I was stuck with a 360 games library compelling me to give in and buy a 360 slim after my 5th refurb broke.

Turns out eventually 5 of 6 of my friends 360s broke too, and we decided to just all go PS3 . It was a great experience, only complaints were some games looked a bit worse and the DS3 triggers were terrible. PS4 fixed all that and we all have PS4 and Plus.

But in terms of games, 360 was great for 2/3rds of the generation then took a dump on early supporters, yet again.

The ubiquitous hate for xb1 wasn't due to its proposed launch policies, those were merely the culmination of years of frustration felt by gamers feeling abused and exploited by xbox division.

MS's business strategy with 360 is a perfect lesson on how dominate as a relatively new entrant into an established market, develop a loyal consumer base, then obliterate all the good will gained from consumers by treating them like mindlessly loyal fools wiling to pay for anything so long as a marketer tells them it's fair and worth it (Greenberg was the worst, he may as well just said to xbox owners, "you'll spend your money on this because we think you're stupid"). You don't need to be a genius to know that you're being treated like an idiot.

360 could have been the one of the best consoles ever but MS blew it.

Because MS recently discontinued the 360 from the market by ceasing production of new hardware. Kind of a nostalgia thing. We saw it when Sony discontinued the PS2 about 4 years ago also, and will probably see them again when Sony discontinues the PS3.

The console had more problems than any other. RROD is the biggest hardware problems a gaming console has ever had. I got 1 just about once a year and then the last one lasted me 3 years before I sold it. Had a 360 at launch and loved the thing had to buy 3 last gen, There was a few times when MS replaced it but a couple times when they would not.

Would do it all over again because the 360 was great, but some people calling it the greatest ever must have started gaming last gen and got the 360 for xmas from mommy and daddy.

Yeah XBOX 360 was the last great console.

Before someone act all emotional and disagrees, XBOX 360: 1st HD videogame console, Wireless controller, made Online much better thanks to XBOX LIVE, the graphical leap was EXTRAORDINARY (from playing HALO 2 XBOX to playing Gears of War for the 1st time) and did many other things....

XBOX ONE and PS4 were disappointing at launch, even the graphics didn't really impress tbh.

in order for something to qualify as HD, it must be displayed at 1280X720 resolution and above. the VGA box displays 640x480 images, so technically NOT HD! I can hook my PS2 on my HDTV too but doesn't mean the PS2 was a HD console. the original Xbox was. although not all games were but the console does support native 720p output.

Welly. you know COD 2 came out for PC before that though? When your best launch game is a port from a PC game, then you're lineup sucks. I only bought a 360 because of the hype that they built up for Gears. It was a rough 8 months from the time I bought until the game released. Those 8 months were filled with crappy games and ports that I had to pretend I liked so I could justify my purchase. Original Xbox was much better and I regret selling it to get money for a 360.

The original Xbox supported 720p and 1080i.
With regard to 1st party wireless controllers, both Sega (with the wireless 6-button Genesis controllers) and Nintendo (with the Wavebird for GameCube) made wireless controllers. But if you're speaking about the wireless controller shipping with the console, then I'd say yeah 360 was probably the first.
Sega was one of the first to pioneer the online console experience. There's still people playing PSO on Dreamcast with privately hosted servers to this day. Even the Saturn had a netlink addon which became available after release.
To me, the biggest graphical leap was the jump from the N64/PSX/Saturn era to the Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox and GC. Soul Calibur launching with Dreamcast was a sight to behold.

Having those things doesn't make it a great console though. It contributes to it, but since so many other consoles had similar features, should they not also be considered great? Being first doesn't always make you great. Nintendo was first with motion controls, but not many around here would call the Wii great.

Most great consoles don't become great due to being first in something, they do it by being the best at something. MS console was pretty good. I won't deny that. But it ignores that other consoles are also great, and more consoles to come will likely end up being great as well. For instance, some people feel another golden age is incoming on the PS4 given the copious support it has all around, with many thing indicating that the library of games could match or possibly exceed the number and variety we had in the PS2 days. Not saying that will happen, but to say MS has the last great console is just ridiculous.

CDi had a native wireless controller and every system from SNES on to Gamecube had a add on wireless controller. XBL was based on SEGANET. Online console gaming is as old as the 16 bit era with Xband that was offically supported by third parties. Every console has a graphical leap. N64 and Dreamcast were massive jumps esp that DC had Arcade ports looking better than the Arcade and some games looking better than the best looking PC game of the time. The one thing I can give 360 is bringing on the indie scene on consoles. Other than that everything it did has been done before.

Mine was the PS2 with FFXI. I had a DC, but never went online to play games with it. I think I used it's browser functions from time to time though.

This opinion piece is too funny. N4g needs to do a poll on the thoughts of the 360.. The negatives would be a landslide of disappointing comments.

The damned thing broke on me 3 times! Even when i bought its own inner cooler with its own power supply!

The 360 will go down as microsofts best efforts to try to dethrone sony... There i fixed the header for you.

Its funny how ms fans cling to the 360 as this or that but when it comes to this gen.. The truth is glaringly shown. The xb1 is getting beat down day after day... Kind of sad at this point.

You guys are over selling the Xbox 360. And its weird because the more you hear people pander to Microsoft, the more ill and mentally unstable they sound. We can just get articles from people saying congrats or kudos... its always overly passionate zealous nuts trying to outdo each other. Something that good should at the very least have been able to beat the Wii or at least the PS3. Neither occurred... even with a 100% repurchase rate.

Looking back through consoles of previous gens it was not always the most powerful that took the top honors.

This gen might be the first where that has changed thanks to the PS4.

I think you're right.

Don't get me wrong. If people want to think it's the best console, more power to them. Who am I to judge? I mean, I think the best console of all time was the Turbo Duo, and I know not many people will agree with me on that one.

But to keep going around claiming it's the best as objective fact instead of subjective opinion is kind of ludicrous. It's even hard to justify claims of it being "king" or "the best of it's time" or anything else in an objective fashion, because it requires removing so many of the negative aspects that came with the system, and requires you to ignore what people claim make it the best, mostly existed in other places as well.

Yeah, it had a crap ton of games in Japan that never made it to the west. I was really into imports back then, and it really couldn't be beat in variety and quality of games. not that the competition didn't also have great games, but it's unbelievable just how many great games it had, and some of them were more impressive than the competition.

It wasn't the most powerful console for it's time, although certainly held it's own, but the addition of the CD becoming almost standard later in it's life made most of the games bigger, with more presentation value than any of it's counterparts, who's CD add-ons never achieved the same kind of success.

It's a shame it didn't get the support in the US that it needed, because it really had a shot at taking on Nintendo and Sega, and that would have been interesting to see considering how big NEC and Hudson were at the time. In Japan, it actually was the highest install base active console for a couple years, with it's active support life span stretching into the PS1 days, and even outselling it's successor, the PC-FX. It's really amazing just how good the games got for it considering the technology in it was kind of between the genesis and NES eras.

My favorite games were Ys I&2, Cotton, Parodius, Ys 4, SF:CE(best version of the game at the time), Dragon Warrior and Cosmic Fantasy 2...which is the game that got me into JRPG's. It's kind of funny that a lot of lesser known yet very popular JRPG's nowadays like Ys and Legend of Heroes(started with Dragon Warrior), were actually made very popular on the TG/DUO, and so many people don't even remember or even know about the console.

I sadly never got Dracula X back then. Could never find it, and by the time I could, it was cost preventative. I have a sealed copy now for my collection, but only ever played it on the PS1 re-release.

And here i thought I was the only TG16 / PCE fan on this site. Saddly my Duo needs new caps but I find it to have been a great system that had an even better plethora of games stuck in JP. Thankfully there is no region lock on the CD side. Dracula X, Spriggan, even the Neo Geo ports on Arcade Card.

They did say it wouldn't be as long as the PS2...which sold up to a year before this gens launch...which is pretty incredible TBH. The reason given was that CELL production costs have hit a wall, and would likely increase due to economies of scale, thus making it harder to produce the system at a reasonable cost.

However, given how quickly the PS4 has been adopted, it may not matter that much. PS3 is still getting a lot of games made for it though. Not the newer AAA titles, but tons of stuff from Japan is incoming.

I agree. Last gen was marginally passable. Slow to start with games all around, lack of variety in games. Hardware taking too long to really get utilized to it's full effect. Too many new practices which were aimed at maximizing revenue at the expense of providing a quality product.

last gen surely had some great highlights on the games front, but nothing else about it was truly extraordinary. Even all the features which came to consoles which people gush about were really all that interesting IMO.

Maybe I got spoiled in the PS2 days when you weren't waiting months for the next great game, but were going into the store every week to decide which great game releasing that week you would buy. It really was kind of a pick and choose thing back then, now, and last gen except maybe near the end, it was "finished this great game, can't wait for two months from now when the next one releases....which mid tier title will I use to pass the time".

I do sometimes wonder just how long people have been gaming when they go on about how many great games are getting released for last gen(at the time) and this gen, and wonder if they actually were around or remember just what it was like for game releases during the PS2 days. PS2 days, every taste was catered to monthly with 1-2 titles or more. JRPG's you had to pick and choose from, and the number of high quality JRPG's were numerous sometimes making it hard to choose. A ton of unique games which wouldn't be looked at twice nowadays, or be dismissed as indie titles(called mid-tier back then). Lots of big budget, high quality story based games with more interesting stories than most of what I've seen last gen or this one(albeit with terrible acting compared to today). So many new concepts coming out on a regular basis. And the list goes on.

All last gen ushered in was the acceptance of mediocrity and conformity in game design, with very few examples which broke the mold as every publisher chased after what appeared popular.

it was a good system nothing more nothing less, it seems like people like to give it credit for things the industry was already going to do like online and HD but live was the original Xbox's thing not the 360's .For me the Ps2 was the last truly great system.Though im a JRPG lover so of course i have to go with the system that had them in ample supply.

It is my favorite console ever. As far as RROD, I had to replace more PS3S for overheating than 360s, so the RROD, yes we all agree should not have happened but MS fixed the issue. I have had 0 issues out of my 360 S model since day 1. PS3 for me was used as my Blu Ray player, and a few Sony exclusives like Uncharted, and everything else was bought on the 360, especially if it was online.

Edit: Mind you, i'm only talking RROD here. In total I had about 5 360's. Those DVD drives were almost as garbage as their cooling config.

I had issues the first one I had a firmware update issue then I kept getting refurbished ones that would break I went through that about 4 times then just bought a slim that never had any issues.Sucked bad though at least none of the people disagreeing with you had the same issues.

Once the XBox 360 Slim was released RROD was a thing of the past. Never had any issues with my 360 Slim. My original PS3 60GB system had the Blu-Ray drive fail. Well the DVD portion wouldn't work, so I couldn't play any PS2 games on it. Blu-Ray still worked though. Both PS3 & 360 systems still get very hot. I can hear the fans kick in when they are starting to over heat. Still I've been able to leave them both on all night for like 36 hours and they still work just fine.

well the first one had a issue with the firmware it messed up and wouldn't finish installing past a certain point (this was back when they actually flashed the bios they fixed that issue soon after)then after that the refurbished consoles would last near a year.Mind you im a smoker that tends to leave their console on 24/7 so I wasn't too upset I was abusing them.

Damn, so glad i never had rrod that would've p*ssed me off. I did get the red ring but it was a warning (put the console in the tv stand cabinet...bad idea) if the door wasn't clear and i never noticed the rr it would've probably been done for. Cabinet was hot as an oven lol

I never really understood how anyone could go through so many of one product. I mean, I can understand maybe getting a faulty system. It happens in all electronics to get a potential dud. but to get two duds, and OK...maybe one is just really unlucky, or user error. The third time though, that's when it starts being borderline insane, thinking that anything is going to change, and the forth is just masochistic in terms of accepting that you are receiving a complete POS product not worth the time or effort to try and keep around.

No offense to you, and I hope most or all of the replacements were done by MS, but even still, it just isn't how I envision a consumer should act in terms of how they consume products. I believe in supporting quality. I pay extra for quality, even when I was poor, and one thing that really irks me as a consumer is when I pay a lot of money for something, and it isn't reliable as it should be. If it happens to be like that, then I stop using it or supporting it, and tend to go on rants on forums about how much it sucks. But with RROD, I see so many people say it as not really that big of a deal, and forgive the problem because at some point MS made it right.

Just think if it was your car. If you had your starter go out 4 times, and pay to get it replaced(or done through warranty), would you think the company makes quality cars and want to go back to that company after those kinds of problems? Even if the rest of the car was awesome, how would a sane person react to that kind of thing?

It's kind of ironic. My dad is much the same way. He was never a fan of Sony products, because he's always gotten the lower end stuff from them, mostly speakers or stereo systems and maybe some other devices, and they have never been good quality. He has a very low opinion of their products, and doesn't buy them because of it. However, I'm a firm believer in Sony products, because they do have solid products, and I've never had any problems with them outside of having to replace a laser in my PS2. I think though since he's seen how good the Sony products I've personally have/had are, he's more willing to accept them should he ever need something that they make...although he's not much into electronics nowadays.

Author keeps bringing up PLAYSTATION over and over and over again in an xbox eulogy, trying to downplay every 360 shortcoming -RROD- while overplaying every PS dislike -knocks both ps3/ps4 controllers-

Talks 360 sales dominance while avoiding the Wii all together and the 360 losing a 10 million - 0 lead twice.

Says he's proud of spending lots of money on avatar items (!) after writing off PS exclusives until Uncharted at the end of the ps3's cycle. UC1/MGS4/GT5/KZ2/GOW3/inFamous /DemonsSouls etc never happened to him but Halo/Fable/Gears did. Priorities a bit skewed?

Namedrops Halo after an xbox HD revolution tangent, but Halo3 ran 640p native and the OG 360's didn't even have HDMI. C'mon techradar.

If your eulogy can't stop talking about the competition, it means you're still chasing them. Ironically you wind up doing the 360 a disservice by lacking an ability to be humble and objective, turning a fond farewell into more revisionist history damage control. Just write an article saying you loved ye good ship xbox without dropping depth charges and fire barrels behind 'er.

Darn you COD 2-3(3 was poo) 4,5,6 gave up a bit after that Orange box burnout paradise, Arkham asylum/city, GTA4 was so tempted to get it on PS3 tho, Red dead but Xbox had some great games not all that many exclusives tho I could have played all those games elsewhere just Xbox had everything running slick and Sony were struggling for the first couple of years games were having to get patched as they were unplayable but it all turned around. Funny how things change if you rest on your laurels.

YLoD wasn't too far behind RRoD Sony definitely dodged a bullet. Because of that people with defective systems due to YLoD were stuck paying a ridiculous repair fee and often just opted to buy a new system all together rather than take any chances with a refurb, which is what you got back from Sony. I remember those days well I spent a lot of time in the "then" toxic PlayStation General forum before I purchased my PS3.

The 360 was a great console and contributed a lot towards gaming in that generation it's just silly and down right stupid to downplay it's role in gaming history.

What with the major amounts of failing consoles in its early days, being charged to go online and Kinect not to mention attempting to inflict HD-DVD on people when it's clearly all about Blu-Ray currently and at the time. Best console ever... Most expensive what with all the repairs and replacements and then Kinect and HD-DVD drives if you wanted em. Its Microsofts best console ever for sure and it had a massive amount of developer support they all made the the main console even tho really PS3 should have had it due being technically better in majority of areas however Microsoft won it and gave Sony the tightest fight they've ever had Nintendo just did their own thing as always but Xbox have got a way to go to get back to their glory days in Gaming. Proper decent games would help, but best console ever over NES/SNES/Mega Drive (Genesis) N64, Dreamcast, PS1/2/4 GBA, 3DS XL, and Wii U (cough cough) don't think so it's up there but I'd struggle to put it above any of these consoles maybe Wii U as I did put years (nearly 9 while it was working) into my Xbox 360 but mainly got sucked into the achievements and I was paying for gold so wanted my money's worth once unplugged myself matrix style and stopped getting drained things were great ;)

Hmmmm no I'd say ps2.
Not gonna deny that 360 was a game changer for the online space but that's about as much as it did. It came out bare bones without most of what the competitor offered. It had one of the largest failure rates and large games like ff had to be played on multiple discs while on only 1 on the competing console. It had some great timed exclusives for a while but they all went to the ps3 as well in the end. Quality exclusive content dried up far too early while ps3 kept pumping out great games to the last. For me, not only is not the last great console, it wasn't even the best in its generation.

I can't agree. It was great fun, bought plenty of new things to console gaming, but a lot of what i hate about gaming really took off on the 360 first and it still exists today.

For me, the last great console was the PS2.

Ps2 had games for everyone. It catered to different genre of games. Xbox 360 was mainly catered to fps. The ps2 library was massive even if some game didn't appeal to the majority. It was there for those who like those type of games. Name me another console that had that much diversity.

If you can't understand it, fine...but something just doesn't sell over 150mil units for being "average" or "nothing special". You can only ride on hype for so long before the console die with the hype like the Wii. The PS2 was different. It truly was a great console that offers games for everybody at the time. Basically THE only console we needed that gen! This was translated by its numbers and dominance and people talking highly about it even now.

The PS2 strenghtened Sony's grasp on the console market while the Wii did the opposite. The Wii was last gen and it's pretty much forgotten yet the PS2's legacy lives on!

Oh brother You guys are arguing over something like this how silly. i owned a 360 & got it for what jrpgs it had at the time only available on X360. Afterward I went back to PS3 as it had more of the games I prefered. Who cares if someone likes Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo or all. Does it always have to be one or the other, why can't people like both. At least we can agree that when it came to last gen. PS3 & 360 were more for hardcore whilst Ninty focused on Motion controls which was a fad that was going to only last for so long.X360 was a big step up from the Original Xbox and credit has gotta be given where it's due cause Xbox 360 performed well nonetheless.
We'll see about Nintendo NX.

As the owner of a PS4 & Wii U. I can say I like both for specific reasons, but I prefer PS4 cause it has a bigger library of games, and rpg's releasing this year. Can't say that about Wii U.

They are all mostly from Japanese game companies who refuse to make their games on other platforms. That's really one of the main reasons to own a PS4 is for JRPG's and a few exclusives.

The 360 and PS3 will probably be remembered as the last great SINGLE generation of consoles.

I don't think its going to be fair to compare then and now, with the Xbox 1.5 and PS4.5 about to hit, if rumors are true - we have never really had such a substantial "revision" of a current console in the same generation.

And also the PS3 hasn't been discontinued yet but the 360 has LMAO. Just like how the original Xbox was discontinued like 8 years before PS2 did. I suspect the PS4 will be around way longer than Xbone too. It's on it's way to sell as much as the PS2.

Man, this is like the 10th article I've seen saying pretty much the same thing each time "How the 360 will go down on history as the best console ever".

Seriously, give it a break. We all know all these articles are just coming from the same 10 XB1 owners, possibly the only XB1 owners on this site, who are constantly creating new accounts and trying their hardest to make the Xbox seem relevant. (And also doing their best to spread as much FUD about the PS4 they can).

LMAO what a crock of Poo is this article... I'm sorry the opening 3 years of XB360's life were it's best! But it's support for quality ground breaking exclusives dried up to a paltry Gears, Halo, Forza and fable rotation......

PlayStation may have had a rough start with PS3's early 2 years but pound for pound it's Games exceeded expectations, performed well and nabbed countless innovation and technical performance and game of the year awards..

The Xbox 360 simply showed Sony should be more inclusive with their design philosophy of making a gaming platforms developer could thrive on... beyond that it was the same old sequel year in year out after its big third party exclusives became multiplatform.

Lol. XB360 was an OK platform for gamers, everyone who owned a PS3, even in the early days knew it was the better machine for games, exclusives drowned PS3 owners and it shows... the PS3 rose to outsell XB360... check the resume

The first 2 years of the PlayStation weren't even bad either. In fact, they were great! I was playing gems like warhawk, motorstom, resistance 1 and 2, MGS4, Uncharted and LittleBigPlanet and Valkriya Chronicles all within its first 2 years.

It will be the console that made me totally stop buying Microsoft consoles after through court proceedings and investigations it was brought to light that Microsoft....

1) lied to the public and tried to dismiss RROD issues initially
2) Was found that prior to Xbox 360 being sold Microsoft knew of the issue and rushed anyway to release its system before Sony
3) Did not accept RROD systems and made ppl repurchase up until the point of the class action lawsuit
4) Had the biggest failure rate out of any system ever!!!!!!!!!

Now you can be a fanboy and say "oh you guys are full of it, they changed their warranty, honored RROD systems, etc..." but it is common knowledge and the class action lawsuit is public record and we all know Microsoft didn't change the warranty or act in good faith until the class action lawsuit and the courts pushed their hand!!!!!!

I will say that they did heavily influence and innovated online gaming too bad they tarnished that achievement with the shady, grimey, RROD situation and then after with bs Kinect and lying saying Xbone couldnt work without it and all the DRM anti consumer stuff they tried to pull.

That's not true.

The greatest console so far is the PS2. It dominated its generation by being the underpowered console. No other console, except the PS4, is on its way to surpass it.

The xbox 360 ended third in its generation and will be always known as the console with the most failure rate ever.

They let Rare turn Nuts and Bolts in to a vehicle creation game. Yes, the art design was pretty and yes that concept looked fun if it was still largely a platformer but it wasn't.

Oh yeah i forgot about a few of my discs getting randomly scratched one time my mate came round with Spider-Man.. 3? Think it was 3 console crashed loaded it back up stuck at the menu, took disc out looked like someone had taken a compass to it... Happened to a couple of others as well but the circlular scratches weren't as severe still pretty shoddy.

I bought a ps3(60gb BC) after my original launch 360 had RROD. I had to pay Microsoft for repairs to have it fixed. This was before they extended the warranty. I gamed on ps3 until I got my 360 back then gamed on both. I then sold the OG 360 and bought a slim white glossy 360 (first slim model). I still own both this gen but still consider the PS3 the better console from last gen and ps4 definitely the better this gen. I guess it comes down to what you like and I like game variety

Wait I don't blame ya at all, variety is great we all love a great sequel but not just cut and paste jobs and Uninventive unoriginal uninspiring games. Nintendo/Sony/Rockstar/Valve/C riterion/Rare/FreeRadical-Times plitters/ Naughty Dog, Hideo Kojima (F.U. Konami) Sega even make classic games whats EA, Ubisoft, Activision and Microsofts excuses. I know Rare are owned by Microsoft now but they've barely made an 8/10 game since they joined Microsoft, rare replay just shows the best of their stuff was all on N64.

Personally, I never owned an XBOX 360, because when I was ready to buy in 2008, XBOX 360's were breaking left and right. No offense towards anybody, but I was raised not to buy anything that is built to break........not even a toaster. My old school parents taught me to leave any such item where it belongs..........

I told myself I wouldn't but then dived in (360) about a month or so after launch it was great whilst it lasted (9 years) when it worked but I'm surprised I did as I had the original Xbox which o thought was pretty poor 9 months of minimal use and when I went to use it had died and needed repairing. Great memories with Microsoft?! Haha.
I dived into 360 not did a 360 dive. I can barely swim.

I am sorry but the PS2 still holds this crown. Any gamer who is old enough to remember that generation knows this. Nintendo definitely had it's golden years during the Gameboy, NES and SNES eras but the PS2 was a console that shined the brightest during the generation with the fiercest competition. The original Xbox and the Gamecube were both amazing consoles with some of the best games of all time released on those systems but the PS2 was always the number one choice for gamers at the time due to its literally unbeatable library of exclusive third party and first party games. The sheer amount of exclusive content was something that we will probably never again see in future generations.

The last great console.
1.) DVD Capable only (with blu-ray available) 9 gigs 17 dual layered of storage while the other system had 50 gigs.
2.) An actual disc tray ( previous generation tech)
3.) Proprietary Hard drives only
4.) AAA Batteries in controller STILL used today!
5.) External power brick, STILL used today!
6.) RROD
7.) Scratched discs
8.) Needed separate device purchased to support WiFI
9.) Needed separate unit purchased to watch defunct HD movies.
10.) No HDMI support in early models even though the tech was available.

So how was the 360 the Last great console? Because of Xbox live? The xbox live that introduce PAY TO PLAY!???
Xbox live was a "SERVICE" not a console if you are talking pure console the 360 was a piece of shit. It should be considered one of the worst consoles of all time.

Can we also take a minute and recognize that the ps4 has almost no technical issues and is doing incredibly well in sales? Also, I'm still using my ps3 in my bedroom and it still works. I was about to get 360 since the PS3 havent been yet released but suddenly I heard so many people complaining about 360 RROD and disc scratches and that's why I have skipped it. Also I'm not a big fan of Original Xbox controllers as I have got tired of it for its bad directional buttons and the 360 was even worse when I tried it.
Of course after a huge satisfaction with thousands of hours on PS1 & 2 I haven't even hesitated to get my hands on PS3, Also whats made me enjoy the PS3 system it had free online service, Blue-Ray, Shareable accounts, Lots of exclusive great games and latterly NO region lock.
I wouldn't say the 360 was a bad system ofcourse but it diffidently wasnt the best console either, not even close.

I wouldn't say last great. XO and ps4 are great too. I'd say 360 will be the last.....innovating console. Maybe not the right word. The jump 360 brought wont be matched again. Other consoles will innovate but it won't be as big or as game changing.

Hum I don't agree with the why of this article but I will agree that the X360 was a great console.
I would be ok to say that the PS3 and Xbox 360 are the latest great consoles as both were great in their own right.

Now I'm sure that some fans will say that the PS4 should be known as the last great console but no, while the PS4 is popular it is far from a great console (nor is Xone).
Both of theses consoles are just glorified PS3 and X360 HD.

Honestly what has theses consoles offered that was innovative and new?
1080P and 60 frames sec for remastered titles?

Heck the PS4 already has problem holding 60 frames seconds for new game (Batman, Farcry, Uncharted 4 single player, etc.)

So yes Ps3 and 360 should be known as the last great consoles as it seem the future will go toward the mobile model where we have new version of PS OS or Xbox OS.

PS2 and 360 best consoles ever.
I still have my 2007 Xbox 360, it's a DVD player in my daughters room now - never had any real problems but lately the disc drives been a bit sticky. PS2 is still going strong though!

Still playing games on my PS3. As of last year, there were still new games coming out and at least one more scheduled for this year in Persona 5.

Loved 360 until Kinect took it over. But the fact is PS3 had much longer legs.

Yeah, I know 3 people who have had Xb360s, one has had one and is now on second, his current console is about to give up (the DVD drive basicly doesnt work anymore), one who went through 3 different models and then switched to PS3, and one who has had one pretty early model that still works to this day, despite being dropped a couple of times when they moved. Having a functioning early model is pretty lucky, and I guess if it hasnt broken until now, it wont break too soon in the future.

Using the cheap versions of DVD drives and a incorrectly stamped mother board frame killed it.
I have used Samsung and Hitachi drives in other devices with great success. The ones in the 360's were junk.
No quality control at the plant stamping the steel frames either.

As far as exclusives xbox did have more but some of them where timed, mass effect and bioshock as example was on xbox awhile before it made its way to the ps3. The 360 was better and the sales shows it, get over it sony fans. Gears if war also smashed all of sony's exclusives.
