Rumor: Hulu, networks to change model of free streaming

nypost: Viewers who stream network TV shows may soon discover the free ride is not so free.
Hulu, which attracted 31 million unique users in March under a free-for-all model, is taking its first steps to change to a model where viewers will have to prove they are a pay-TV customer to watch their favorite shows, sources tell The Post.

The story is too old to be commented.

that is bunk, do people actually use hulu?

triverse1676d ago

I use Hulu (even have a paid subscription which is cheaper than buying season DVD's of classic shows that I will probably watch once a year or two).

If I have to prove I have a cable subscription to enjoy it, I will stop mainly because most of the shows (not full seasons though) are available on the network websites where they rotate episodes out once a week and is free.

I use Hulu a lot for TV shows if I missed last weeks episode. I have noticed they sometimes get it up before the network does online. Other then that, I don't pay for it...no.

monkeyfox1675d ago

So er...they pull you in telling you that its free and then once millions of people have signed up they say "ok now we gonna charge you suckers..."?

Speed-Racer1675d ago

Yep, and now they're going to be the suckers.

Considering that Hulu makes advertising revenue it seems like this will simply cost them subscribers and make advertising with them much less attractive.

I just signed up for a Hulu Plus free trial, but if this turns out to be more than a rumor I might cancel, I might cancel my cable subscription too, just because this type of nonsense just pisses me off.

We canceled our cable subscription because we watched the same shows every day (90% are on free TV in re-runs anyhow so cable just offered a DVR for us at a cost of nearly $60 a month). I do watch a lot of stuff on Hulu that isn't on cable at the moment (that I know of) like The A-Team, Airwolf and Alf so it is worth paying $7 or $8 a month to have access to those shows and more.

I agree, and since many people already use cable companies for phone and internet you would think it shouldn't be a big deal if more people are changing to streaming over TV. They are already getting a piece of the pie on overpriced internet subscriptions, but that apparently isn't enough, the greedy jerks want to eat the whole pie.

if you dont watch a lot of cable, or the shows you do watch arent on the cable channels. Then Hulu is a good option, i have Hulu and Netflix, and that combo is way cheaper than paying a 60-70 dollar cable bill and i can watch all me shows. And any of the cable shows ie Dexter, Game of Thrones.. i get through other means.

so i guess its back to pirating and streaming vids when they do this I already have netflix no time for this.
