MegaUpload data to be erased by Thursday

What's Hawt: "The US feds have authorized MegaUpload’s hosting providers to go ahead deleting data from its servers as early as Thursday." (MegaUpload, Services, Web)

IllusionRSN  +   112d ago
Well, I think we all knew this was coming... Let's hope it stops here.
ChrisW  +   112d ago
It won't stop until "millions of innocent users" cease to use such servers for pirating and other illegal things.

someone needs to scour the tos. you can sue the us government for this. if you paid for a service and followed the contract you have rights. smh so the FBI went and downloaded all the content they wanted for "evidence"

Soldierone  +   112d ago
PR companies used it every day, I noticed lately they all switched to using YouSendIt which isn't nearly as fast for some reason.
Racer-X  +   112d ago
I know the flight sim community heavily depended on it for larger scale projects. There was a big uproar over at the avsim forums when news came of the shut down. I feel it for those guys, but I do hope they had offline back-ups.
fatstarr  +   112d ago
I know tons of people that have mega upload accounts for legit and private files and stuff. I laugh and say you have a mega upload account apparently tons of people do.
KidMakeshift  +   112d ago
Torrent sites only seed things that are popular so this really does suck.

Plus, all these other file sharing sites like Fileserve are closing shop for the most part.

Fuck our government! Now all the obscure music, movies, anime, etc. that I like is now impossible to get ahold of because: 1. the stuff is out of print or never received a public release or 2. is overpriced by the lack of an import market in america.

so to reiterate, FUCK OUR GOVERNMENT and fuck that Jim Sterling looking fat idiot for using American servers!

Who needs SOPA when they can shut down sites at will!
fatstarr  +   112d ago
ACTA is coming my good sir.

the fbi can only shut down sites under investigation and with clear purposes of providing illegal content.

Funny how they played the THEY HAD SERVERS IN THE US card... When bandwith is cheap as hell and safe in Hong Kong.

Here's a fun story: I used to work at PokerStars, the world biggest Poker site. When the US decided to pass a ONLINE POKER IS LEGAL AS LONG AS WE REGULATE IT (ie: set up shop in Nevada for hosting it) we were raided and suddenly there were claims that we had "processors and servers in the US". We didn't and never did.
Racer-X  +   112d ago
Well the thing is if they hosted all their content is China, downloads would be no where as fast as they are now. They wouldn't be able to promise high speeds to their premium customers. Most large sites (even static sites) use content distribution networks located across various continents to split the load over different regions. It's a technical common sense practice, but not common sense legally. The US won't touch servers in Russia and China, so whoever wants to operate a file locker from now on will have to resort to those measures.

The prisons in Norway are like vacation resorts.
cyberwaffles  +   112d ago
i hope its all backed up and someone opens up a sister site. torrent isn't my thing. only things that have a lot of seeds (i.e. only popular stuff) have decent download speeds. not only that, i have a hard time finding the more ambiguous material out there as it is. this sucks.
Sucitta  +   112d ago
yes we live in a disgusting world when pedos that rape 5yr olds get less time then internet pirates.

these companies already make billions. enough to change the world and solve all its problems, yet they create more sloth greed addict problems and do nothing but want more and more and more and more and more and more and more.

the people learn how to share so they change the laws and jail the anti corporate anti greed basterds....

sick mad mad world

Who said they got 50 years? I don't agree with what's going on, but calm down with spreading false information, just to cause up a stir.
closnyc  +   112d ago

Racer-X  +   112d ago

Dotcom, born Kim Schmitz, was arrested Friday at his luxurious mansion in Auckland, New Zealand. Dotcom and other Megaupload executives were charged with racketeering, money laundering, copyright infringement and more. If convicted, they could face up to 50 years in prison.

if hes convicted he potentially getting 50 years...

Reborn  +   112d ago
Exactly, thank you.

@clos How has he been convicted already? Stop saying, "He has been given 50 years" when he hasn't.
