Microsoft Exec: Time For Windows XP To Go

Microsoft spent most of this week talking up its new tablet-friendly Windows 8 operating system, but the fact is the majority of enterprises haven't even moved to Windows 7 yet. They may want to get moving, as a senior company official warned that there will be no life extension for Windows XP and related products beyond 2014.
"We are end-of-lifing XP and Office 2003 and everything prior, in April 2014," said Kevin Turner, Microsoft's chief operating officer, during a meeting with financial analysts Wednesday. "So for all those companies that have the old products that haven't quite started the refresh, guess what? This has been a great product, XP has been a wonderful product; great TCO has been given. It's now time for it to go."

He speaks the truth. They also need to stop releasing new windows so soon. It takes about 5 or more years until most people change their OS. So there is no need to rush.

Ya. The time between W7 and W8 was waaaay too small imo. Especially considering W7 is really good...

Your normal businesses that use desktop computers and stuff will not use Windows 8. Trust me, I tried the (legal) dev build, it has NO place on a desktop computer. I'll be sticking to Win7.

What's wrong with it?

I'm just curious because I thought it was built around W7...

For a tablet computer, I could see it working but...

It's like, the metro UI is tacked onto the side of your legacy UI. Let's say you want to open control panel. You first have to start typing which automatically brings up metro search, then you click control panel, which then loads metro control panel, then you have to scroll down, click more settings, which then minimises metro UI, loads up legacy UI and then shows us the control panel we're used to.

That's just ONE thing.

It just really sucks for desktop computers, everything you want to do takes longer in Win8 then it would in Win7. You can't get rid of metro UI either, it's unfortunately a part of Windows 8, even though most things you do will minimise metro anyway, but you can only access those things from metro.

It's just (as of right now) a crappy experience.

Good enough.

I always thought metro was really ugly too :)

Upgrading can be a hassle, but I think it would be a mistake from a security perspective to continue running XP once MS stop supporting it all together in 2014.
