Its also a good move to secure niches. RIM needs to do something. There hardware isnt compelling so they need to this to stay fresh in the minds of the business folk and the public alike.

if they could reconnect with the business world they could gain competitive advantage in the smartphone world.

Just like how windows XP is still dominant because Schools and Business places are still using them.
