Editorial: The Future of Computer Enclosures

Benchmark Reviews: I can remember the lead-sleds that rolled with a curb weight similar to moving vans, and it reminds me of modern-day desktop computer cases. Originally, giant-sized computer cases painted in beige were once the de facto standard for system builders wanting to construct their own IBM clone personal computer from separate components. I believed this horrible trend would phase itself out around the turn of the century, but when Y2K came and went and there was still significant demand for large full-tower cases I knew something was wrong. The more things change in this industry, the more they seem to remain the same. Now more than ten years later, we're still building our PCs with the same heft as an Oldsmobile Toronado.

I disagree with some points of this piece. For one, most a SFF case will not house the latest and greatest tech. It's just physically impossible. When graphics cards now are getting to 300mm+ a SFF case just won't cut it. But I don't think a consumer would need an extra ginormous case either but they have their benefits. Large cases like the HAF X create massive airflow and cool much more efficiently. Corsair's Obsidian 800D is one of the largest, but the air cooling capabilities are one of the worst thanks to their three tier cooling system that actually doesn't work...

I think all the average and enthusiast consumer needs is a good mid-tower. CoolerMaster's CM690 II Advanced is one of the best on the market right now, it has practically every feature found in more expensive full tower cases and the cooling capabilities are up there with the HAF X. It's also under $100 which is a steal if you ask me.

This will be my next case ;) CM 690 II Advanced Nvidia edition.
