Pocket-Lint: Texas Instruments has announced, at CES 2010 in Las Vegas, that it will be launching a brand new DLP (Digital Light Processing) Pico HD chipset; bringing the availability of a "new era for on-the-go, big screen video and images".
Built by Texas Instruments, the Speak & Spell electronic educational toy was the first mass-produced product to use digital signal processing.
Maximum PC: Texas Instruments today unveiled what it claims is the industry's first high-temperature, nonvolatile Flash memory device for harsh environments. The SM28VLT32-HT has an operational capacity of 4MB and has been qualified to work in extreme situations ranging in temperature from -55C to +210C. At either end of the spectrum, TI says its 4MB part is good for at least 1,000 hours of operating life.
Engadget: Texas Instruments signaled its intentions to back away from the volatile mobile market as the summer came to a close. Unfortunately, we're now learning that the shift comes at a price -- as part of a wider set of cost-cutting measures, TI is shedding roughly 1,700 jobs worldwide. The chip designer hasn't said how soon the layoffs take effect, but these and the overall budget trimming should lead to savings of about $450 million per year by the end of 2013.
