Biggest issue with custom builds is the possibility of faulty hardware. You could build the entire system and then the system wont post or wont even come on. Or memory modules wont read, or the graphics card doesnt play well with said motherboard. Its a bunch of issues, and waiting if you have to send parts back. When you just buy one from a brand you know for sure its going to work and been tested.
People like the author shouldnt build their own machines. I am glad they found something they are happy with but the pros and cons are for people like the author and not universal.
For instance being my own tech support isnt a con. I do it all day as a profession so to do it myself is not a negative.
You dont usually get to choose brand or specs of motherboard meaning you have no clue what abilities for upgrades you have. For instance how many Hard drives you can add to the machine if you can add any at all because Dell machines are notorious for not providing extra power or Sata ports.
Not to mention if you dont want to fix your own machine if something goes wrong you definitely shouldn't build it.
