It certainly has the potential to be a gamechanger, but it's still far away from realization. Just like VR (and 3D before), I think there'll be a decent amount of people who won't be able to experience it without side-effects.

why not have both at the same time.
simply mount a camera on a VR headset and away you go.
want VR, use it without the camera. want AR, use the camera.
i remember MS showing off something similar where people had like 3d models in their office but only they could see it via the headset.
Although, the real reason why tim cook is pushing AR over VR is because apple products can only do AR at the moment.
so why would you push something you have no business in even if it is the superior product.
