Apple Is Reportedly Developing Long Distance Wireless Charging For iPads And iPhones

Apple is reportedly developing technology that would allow iPhone and iPad owners to charge their device without needing to plug it into the wall or place it on a charging mat. That’s according to a report from Bloomberg which claims the wireless charging tech could work over unspecified long distances.

Cool stuff but I'd rather see greater strides in standalone battery charges.

EXTREMETECH3007d ago

Yes they are really good as compared to this. This might sometimes give a damn.

sonicwrecks3008d ago

Universities and other tech institutions have been on the case with this for about a decade. Only now breakthroughs are being made is Apple trying to get in on the act.

gizmig3008d ago

But I think if they have involved in it then they will definitely achieve it.

mike32UK3007d ago

Im not an Apple fanboy by any means, but lets be honest... This tech up until now has been very limited in both distance and efficiency so it wouldn't have made any sense for Apple (or any other large consumer tech company for that matter) to incorporate this technology into their products

gizmig3008d ago

That must be cool if they launch that feature in iPhone 7 and will definitely attract the users to buy it for sure.

EXTREMETECH3007d ago (Edited 3007d ago )

Only a wireless charger will not attract the users to buy the iphone7. Apple is a bigger brand and people really keep greater expectations from them and they might hunt for some new features indeed.

gizmig3007d ago

Totally agreed. I was just trying to say this maybe one of the factor that will surely attract people towards it. But it will be exciting to see what new features they will offer to their users.

EXTREMETECH3007d ago

Sounds good but i am not at all intrested in this because i really like pluging charger and then charge the phone.

gizmig3007d ago (Edited 3007d ago )

Lol what is there to like in plugin the charger and then charge the phone? #CONFUSED

EXTREMETECH3007d ago

You seem to be confused as this might not work properly all the time.

gizmig3007d ago (Edited 3007d ago )

How can you be so sure? Because there is no point where they have mentioned it won't work properly.

RetrospectRealm3007d ago

Such a feature would be incredibly efficient, but I feel like it would be a few years away if it ever happens.

And to comment on the article mentioning the head phone jack going away... I highly doubt that will happen anytime soon. I rarely see anybody using the wireless headphones or earphones. Obviously, wireless ones are more efficient, but I feel like they are easier to lose. Especially ear phones.

Forum_Pirate3007d ago

They're really not more efficent. Air is a crappy conductor (in fact it's a relatively good insulator)and unless the device is using some form of light to do it's thing (which it probably isn't because that would likely require a direct line of sight and so be mostly useless) then sending it through open air is going to result in needing far more power to get it through the insulation and more still to overcome the fact that less of the power that does overcome the insulation actually reaches the phone.

Ie it's slower, and takes more power. It's convenient, not efficent.

Unless they're using science way, way beyond what I understand on even a basic level.

RetrospectRealm3007d ago

I'm saying it would be efficient if they could pull it off where it worked pretty good. The idea of being being able to charge wirelessly is incredibly efficient. Obviously if it works but in a sucky way, that isn't efficient at all.
