The App That 'Hears' You Sleep

One of the first features to wow people about the iPhone when it launched back in 2007 was how accurately it could detect movement. Swedish app developer Maciek Drejak remembers downloading an early seismograph app in 2009, setting his iPhone on the table and walking past it. To his surprise, he could see the vibrations of his footsteps on the screen.

Drejak wanted to harness that unique ability, and he thought of a friend who had been measuring sleep patterns by wearing a special wristband. Maybe he could do the same with this sensitive iPhone. First he taped the phone to the food of his bed. Then he brought the phone closer, putting it in the bed next to him.
