5 things Microsoft did right with Lumia 950 XL and 5 things they didn't

DigitFreak: Microsoft revealed two new high-end smartphones Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL last Tuesday. Let’s see if the wait to grab a premium Windows smartphone has been really worth or not. Here is my opinion on the five things Microsoft did right with Lumia 950 XL and 5 things they didn't.

I love how with windows phones the advertising is pretty straightforward. With Apple they just parade around these new features that aren't really that amazing, but Microsoft focuses on what's actually important.

I remember when the fingerprint scanners came out for iPhone that was the only thing they advertised it seemed like, and that was all anyone had to say about the phone.

I'm excited about the 950XL. I like how the atmosphere has turned from "the phones are so ugly I'm going to get an Android/iPhone" to "The 950XL is an awesome phone".

Looks like Microsoft was not exaggerating when they said the 950 phones have the best cameras they have ever put on a phone. There have been lots of improvement when compared to the predecessor. Lumia phones are evolving and so are the Windows Phone OS.

the 950 is what some of us would love the nexus 5X would have been...
-expandable torage ✅ -3gb of ram ✅ -removable battery ✅ -32gb starting option ✅ -wireless charging ✅
I know it has is faults, but men they really announce what it seems to be a great device.

With Microsoft's new project Astoria, developers will be able to easily port Android apps over Windows 10 (most of the GPS API calls are wrapped into MS equivalent APIs with the Interop SDK, e.g. Google Maps -> Here/Bing Maps, so minimum effort required to port apps actually).

There're some tools that allow you to sideload .apk(s) using adb, but if the app strictly requires GPS (e.g. G+ login) you're mostly out of luck at the moment (because the dev has to rewrite some API calls specifically for Astoria).

I'm sure many app developers would take advantage of this bridge to serve the additional 70 millions WP users.

Project Astoria, sounds like something that Blackberry did to protect their OS, and customer acquisition.

No, it is not. It is completely different perspective.

notmyfirstid3116d ago

You're absolutely wrong. Project Astoria is nothing like the APK porting on blackberry devices.

Project Astoria is more like a developer tools, rather than a simple APK porting to restricted environment. If done right it will allow the android apps to work flawlessly in Windows Phone.

It has been demonstrated that how developers can upload their Android app to the Windows Dev Center so it can automatically check it and see how much of its code can be reused, and how much needs to be changed so it can work on Windows 10. Microsoft claims that altering just one line of code on an Android app will allow it to switch from using Google Maps to Bing Maps. A few more lines of code are needed to enable support for live tiles for the Windows 10 start screen

Don't forget Project Islandwood too.

I have been a Windows Phone user for just under a year. After Apple and Droid, it is the one phone that I actually enjoy (and don't have to root in order to get it to do what I want.)

I am interested in the upcoming update and after Google bungled the music (stealing people's paid for content and forcing it to stream), I am finding the Windows phone far more open than that mess. Further, the problems with different "versions" of the droid os means that some apps work, others don't.

iPhone is just popular and that doesn't necessarily mean it is any good.

digitfreakbot3117d ago

Really? Google Music and support for old device by some third party developer is a big issue here?

thorstein3116d ago

Why wouldn't it be when 3rd party support is excellent on WP and iPhone?

And, yes, since most people use their phone for music, why wouldn't the music service be an issue. Especially since you can't use it if there is no service and you can no longer listen to music that was purchased when service is lost.

Those are huge issues. How can they not be?

I'm an Android fan but the 950XL interests me. (I have a Lumia 520 as a play thing) If they can get the app store sorted like the Android and IOS ones then count me in..

Simply put, Microsoft is coming folks, please go watch the full keynote and you'll understand how innovative they really are, it's the best keynote of the year.

netizen3116d ago

Yes, they're. They still lack some expected things, like multitasking and ability to use apps that requires Google play support, but they're very close to be equal to android ecosystem, if not better.
