Windows Phone, Should Microsoft give up the Flagship?

Gravis Ludus' Carl Williams writes, "Windows Phone is not exactly burning up the sales charts, even though it is purportedly holding nearly 3% of the worldwide mobile market share according to the IDC. Within the United States we see a very lopsided sales situation going on- low-end is selling and the high-end is dragging its feet way down the list. While the Lumia 1020 was advertised as decimating the competition as far as the camera was concerned but it currently only holds a 3% share of the Windows Phones sold to date, according AdDuplex. Worldwide it is slightly different as the 1020 doesn’t even rank and the overall market is dominated, much like in the United States, by low-end devices. See where this is going, folks?"

Why would they? Apple sales are up and down and so is Galaxy. Microsoft makes a very good phone and they are getting better. Adding things like cloud support with Skype translate for regular calls(they need to make that happen) and Cortana set Windows phone apart. Apple can compete on Continuum but not on 90% of the market. Windows phone just needs to stick it out and continue to innovate. DX12 increasing battery life on games will make a difference before other APIs catch up. Microsoft just needs to setup a financing or subsidy system. Maybe package with Xbox One or Live or even Office 365. Packaging it with a subsidy for employees for Office 365 clients would help a lot.

You bring up the biggest part of the problem that Microsoft has against them and the Windows Phone itself- price. I agree, if they could start some kind of subsidy program, even if it is like NEXT, JUMP or whatever other four letter words carriers are using, it would help a lot. Also, bundling could only make things better overall. I am not sure why, even if it was a cheaper Windows Phone, that MS has not been bundling Windows Phone with their products from the get go, even if it was a mail in program.

Cortana is coming to Android (I have the beta) and iOS so that kind of negates that exclusive, at least when it officially launches. Similar to how they released Office on Android and iOS, it is only making their own brand phones less attractive than they are already.

I personally love my 635 and plan on getting the slightly better (mainly for the full gig of RAM) 640 or 640 XL soon. Windows 10 makes the phones a lot better than Windows 8.1, and that is saying something because 8.1 on the phones was awesome.

Windows phone biggest problem might actually be that it runs so smoothly on low specs. I think Skype translate, Continuum and universal apps will help. Talking about the ability to use a keyboard will also. And having a universal Windows helps. The idea for a business class will get people used to the idea of Windows phone. A high number of people use whatever work uses for personal use. But for the flagship I feel the most important thing may be design. People buying iPhone probably started because it was cool and pretty. Microsoft has to do a metal case on the flagship.
