Want fiber Internet? That’ll be $383,500, ISP tells farm owner

Internet service providers often charge thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars to extend their networks to people outside their service areas.

But it turns out construction costs passed on to customers can be much, much higher. When the operator of a family farm in Nebraska requested fiber service from the local DSL Internet and phone service company, he found out that he’d have to pay an incredible $383,500 to subsidize the ISP’s construction.

Comcast wants to charge my grandfather $10k for a breaking a line they failed to mark when we called them out to mark so we could put in a sewer line. The guy repairing it used no more than 3ft of cable and took like 5min.

These ISPs are arrogant as all hell because they get away with so much shit seeing there is no competition or meaningful regulation.

4K is a monumental waste of resources, and internet usage is no exception. Technology lags behind the 4X jump in resolution, which started out as a way to coax consumers to dump all their TVs and buy new ones. It stresses all the links in the chain. Eventually, we'll be able to deal with it in stride (though by then, I imagine they'll be pushing 8K or ridiculo-similar on us). For now, 1080p does just fine for me. Easier on everything from my gaming hardware to my wait times.
