Disrupting the disruptors: Uber’s uphill battle

MWEB E-Zone writes: "When the news broke not too long ago that in 2015 so far, roughly 200 driver-owned Uber vehicles have been impounded in Cape Town due to a lack of permits, a major debate broke out.

Simply put, you’re either pro-Uber, or anti-Uber… but it may not be that simple. In all anti-Uber demonstrations globally – Paris, Hong Kong, South Africa, the US and Canada – the protests of local drivers have the same rationale: unfair competition, and the loss of wages and jobs."

I also don't get why they're opposing regulation. Usually stuff like this boils down to one thing. Money.

Whenever you try and disrupt an industry and change it on a fundamental level, the Luddites will always push back. And all you have to do is look at the news to see the beating that Uber is taking all over the world. Almost starting to feel sorry for them...

Disrupting because they don't see themselves as a taxi company. When in fact they are.

Imagine if I created a new concept for eating out, in which you used an app to place your order. And when you arrive at my restaurant, your food is waiting for you at the table. Eliminating the cumbersome waitress out of the equation. And since I have eliminated the waitress with my app and there is no tipping involved, your dinner costs X% less.

But then I tell the local Health Department that I am a “tech” business, not a “restaurant”, and I should not be subjected to their inspections, regulation, or oversight that other restaurants have to undergo. Ignoring why we needed such oversight in the first place. I imagine the restaurant industry as a whole would welcome me with open arms.
