Reddit bans 'Fat People Hate' and other subreddits under new harassment rules

In the wake of a new anti-harassment policy, Reddit is banning a handful of its worst communities. "Our goal is to enable as many people as possible to have authentic conversations and share ideas and content on an open platform," a group moderator post reads. "We want as little involvement as possible in managing these interactions but will be involved when needed to protect privacy and free expression, and to prevent harassment."

The most prominent removal — or, as the moderators say, the only subreddit with more than 5,000 subscribers — is r/fatpeoplehate, a forum devoted to posting (among other things) pictures of overweight people for ridicule. A follow-up comment lists the other four subreddits as r/hamplanethatred, r/transfags, r/neofag, and r/shitniggerssay; they've all indeed been shut down, all but one "for violating the Reddit rules to keep everyone safe." According to the moderator, these last four ranged from 149 to 3071 subscribers, although in r/fatpeoplehate's case, "more than 5,000" is a bit of an understatement; the last Reddit metrics (and a Google cached page) put it at around 151,000 subscribers.

Nobody was being harassed on fatpeoplehate! Reddit is really pissing me off!

Reddit sucks. They talk about being the voice of freedom yet they've censored so many things in the last few years. Their mods are also horrible tyrants.

micx3240d ago

Powermods are a problem there. They take over literally hundreds of subreddits with no special interest in them, but they use their mod powers to push some agenda to their liking.

Lol, you're kidding right. All people did on that sub is down others for not having a look they wanted. Good riddance I say.

asmith23063240d ago

Who cares, it was contained to a certain sub. Why would someone who is offended by it even go there?

subtenko3240d ago

They are hypocrites. They take down that but subreddits like coontown still exist....yea something aint right...probably on their high horse....

Another may replace them...

The ego by which someone thinks their internet presence makes them relevant is laughable.

Is reddit some part of Myspace?

;p

Personally, I've always found most Reddit posts rather boring, senseless, and borderline moronic.

I could never quite understand why people are so involved in it.

asmith23063240d ago

I find subs specific to a hobby, etc. are really good. General subs like news, worldnews, etc. are pure poison.

ZoyosJD3239d ago

Even then, do you really get good quality information without several people getting fired up? Rarely.

SnakeCQC3240d ago

There's still a ton of hateful bigoted subreddits that haven't been banned

mushroomwig3240d ago

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense to be honest. places like /r/coontown are completely racist by design. Being fat is a choice, being a certain race isn't...that's what annoys me the most about this whole situation. Apparently "fatism" is worse than racism now.

micx3240d ago

Response to why r/coontown is still up was that they don't target ideology but subs that harrass (cyber bully?) people.
