Very nearby exoplanet ‘Gliese 832c’ may be able to support life

Exoplanets just keep popping up like crazy! Scientists have discovered yet another planet orbiting the Gliese 832 star that they believe can sustain life because of its proximity from its host. Officially called Gliese 832c, the international team of astronomers at UNSW Australia are reporting that the “super-earth” is just the right distance from its ‘sun’, making it possible for H2O to exist in liquid form. What’s even cooler about this is that this planet is just 16 light-years away from Earth.

Just "16 light years", Lol.

That is close enough to communicate with. We could begin aiming lasers or other types of information transmission at the planet and sending them signals to see if they are able to respond. It would take a minimum of 32 years to find out if there was intelligent life there, but that isn't all that long in the grand scheme of things.

Grand schemes I sure like to be here to see come to fruition thank you very much!

Its shame I wont be a colonial candidate at 60+...

My problem with this is how do you know they can or can't? This could just mean life for us.

What I mean by that is if we came to Earth for the first time and crashed into the ocean, so far that we couldn't get out of it, then what would they say? Lack of oxygen and full of liquid substance, couldn't support life. YET, there are fish living down there just fine.

What's to say that on some of these gas planets, or even desert heatlands, that "life" hasn't adjusted to live in those areas unlike us?

It's kind of like the concept of War of the Worlds. Our air and parasites killed the aliens, but didn't harm us at all.

Well that's a good question; when we look for planets that can support life we look for planets that can support life---as WE know it, not as we don't know it. There could be some really crazy aliens out there that do stuff we could never dream of, but we are forced to narrow our search for things that we know can support life.

We study animals called extremophiles, little tiny organisms that can survive extreme conditions like extreme heat or extreme cold or in environments with very little water. We study these things to know the range at which life can exist in the universe, and in order to narrow our search we look for planets that fall within these parameters.

Well if the human species is to survive, we will have to leave Earth in the next few million years. So looking for other Earths that can support life, means if we can live on those planets with minimal adjustments.

The Sun is getting hotter everyday, at some point it will get so hot that there will be a runaway greenhouse effect just like on Venus.

The more planets we can find that has the chance to support us, the better our chances for survival.

Otherwise what is the point of intelligence if we are all doomed to extinction anyways.

SilentNegotiator3578d ago

They mostly just check to see if a planet is within the right distance from its sun.

LightDiego3578d ago

That means we are aliens for them. That's why i support equality.

karmazheart3578d ago

L.Diego is right...if we go there and invade them, that means we're the greys, we're the aliens! Waaaaaa.....but I don't wanna be an alien!

johny53578d ago

I do believe there's advanced life, just not the type of life where expecting?

I even believe there's life within 20 light years from us, just not the kind of life that boarders on Star Trek or Star Wars!

Maybe in a Galaxy Far Far Away...

hehe 16 light years sweet. I am 19 years old :P lol. Nice one :)
