Will wearing Google Glass make you a douche?

GotGame: So you just plunked down $1500 on a pair of Google Glass and you’re wondering if you just made a big mistake. Well truth be told, Google Glass is a pretty amazing and unique piece of technology but the biggest issue thus far seems to be the reaction people are getting when going out and about with their new glasses. Many journalists who have been able to test them out in the wild have reported many cases of being called a-holes and douchebags both to their faces or behind their backs (but loud enough to still hear it).

...because there is no reason the average citizen would possibly need a piece of technology like that.

Sure, I can see the various medical and business-related applications. I can even see how this could be used in some recreational activities like hiking and biking.

For general use as a phone replacement, though...yeah, you're pretty much a douche.

hkgamer3650d ago

I can only go by what I've seen in that tech demo(?) of google glass, but being able to use google maps on the go. why not?

the average citizen doesn't need a smartphone yet they still have one.

I say people have a bad perception of people when they see them talking or using voice commands unless you have a phone stuck right next to your ear. i mean people look at me when I have a bluetooth or headphones and talking without holding my phone. Does that make me a douche?

sjaakiejj3649d ago

Yeah, anybody who moves at the same pace as technology does is considered a douche these days. Welcome to the club.

"because there is no reason the average citizen would possibly need a piece of technology like that. "

Sounds like...
"I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." -- Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM, 1943.

"There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home." -- Ken Olson

"The wireless music box has no imaginable commercial value. Who would pay for a message sent to nobody in particular?" -- David Sarnoff

Wouldn't jump to conclusions so quickly. As for the article - I think the only douches are the people who judge others for using something they like. If you think someone is a douche or an asshole because they enjoy using a piece of technology that not everyone is already using, you should probably look in the mirror.

You've got me wrong if you think I'm trying to predict the future. I'm sure eventually we'll move into the territory of ocular implants and EVERYONE will have some kind HUD built right into their vision (god help us), but Google Glass is NOT that technology.

Google Glass is literally just a few apps that any modest smartphone can do, but slightly more convenient for the person using it...and consequently more obnoxious for everyone else.

sjaakiejj3649d ago (Edited 3649d ago )

I didn't state you were trying to predict the future, I merely stated that something which doesn't seem necessary or useful to you can actually be useful to others.

And I really don't understand why it's obnoxious. Why do you care so much that someone wears a Glass? Because it's got a camera in it? Seriously, if you're that afraid of being recorded, you better not go outside anymore. Streets and public transport are covered in CCTV cameras. Someone who appears to be reading a book on their smartphone could be shooting a video of you. Hell, spyglasses have been around for 10 years, so practically anyone wearing sunglasses could be recording you without your consent or knowledge.

Bimkoblerutso3649d ago (Edited 3649d ago )

Jesus H. Christ.

If you are unable to understand why some people would think it's obnoxious and douchey to want to have a camera and facebook literally attached to people's faces, then I don't know what else to say to you.

It's not like I loathe new technology. I just generally loathe pop-technology. That is, the kind of technology that is designed specifically to capitalize on current fads. And by and large that's all this is.

bigrob9043650d ago

well that's not really a correct way to think about it. for instance, most people who have tablets get them and just use it to play angry birds. most people who have tablets truly have no need to get them. does this make them a douche? no it doesn't, so why would people getting a google glass be douche's? also, there are many uses for a google glass, that could be more convenient than pulling out you smart phone, for which most people don't use to it's fullest capabilities yet most americans have one. google glass is just the natural evolution of wearable tech. me myself though, i'm waiting for the omni tool(mass effect).

Spiewie 3650d ago

Nah it makes you a glasshole.

Bimkoblerutso3650d ago

And his icon fits so perfectly with the comment.

Mankey3650d ago

Welp, pack your bags, no ones making a better comment here.

Software_Lover3650d ago

no, you're were most likely a douche before.

People who made fun of and cracked jokes to Star Trek nerds and Anime nerds "DBZ" now want to act like the cool kids on the block by wearing the next best thing? Yeah, give me a break!

Most of those people want to buy it to be mini plastic celebrities just for the attention and there not so much Glassholes then they are Narcissistic Assholes!

The problem is they always have been assholes it's just that now you can see it on there faces!

Out of the 1,000 or so people who bought it, how many are really using it for professional use or anything other then showing off?

Dasteru3650d ago

No more so than people who used smart phones 7 or 8 years ago. The people who see them as douches are certainly highly ignorant and simple minded though.

johny53650d ago

Funny that I'm defending Anime nerds like you, yet your defending those so called douches who would roll there eyes towards a person having a Goku avatar?

Dasteru3650d ago (Edited 3650d ago )

I'm not defending anyone. I'm simply being realistic rather than a narrow minded fool, stuck in the past. 8 years ago everyone who used smart phones was called a douche and various other things, by people who were either too poor to also have them or just to ignorant to understand them. Now it is the ones using flip phones who are joked about. It is no different for Glass. You think it is douchey because you are ignorant of progression. Glass has alot of functionality that you cannot get any other way. It is also alot more streamlined and convenient than having a pocketed phone. 5 years from now it will most likely be common place and copied by loads of other companies.

Smart phones.
Digital watches.
bluetooth headsets (thanks to hkgamer for the reminder)
tablet computers like IPads.

All were laughed at by people like you when they first came out.

"780mAh battery" yeah, no thanks. I've seen what batteries do when they overheat; but hopefully they won't have a Samsung situation.
