CNET: UK schoolboy Jamie Edwards becomes the youngest person to build a working nuclear fusion reactor thanks to the backing of his school.
A fusion reactor?!! That kid better be working on flying cars soon!
This is fusion, not cold fusion. Fusion has been possible for years, but it still requires more energy (right now) to cause the reaction than you actually get out of the reaction -- which is why fusion reactors haven't replaced all the fission reactors all over the world. Cold fusion (a fictional concept) is the same thing, but at room temperature and requiring much less energy on the input with more on the output. This is still a feat for a 13 year old kid and nothing to be overlooked. He obviously has a grasp on higher level physics and chemistry and deserves some recognition.
No where in the entire article does it states this is cold fusion. I think you just wanted to talk about cold fusion, or you are not genuinely impressed with what this kid did.
One smart young kid who doesn't want to be a footballer, or go on The X factor
Until a year or two when he realizes nuclear fusion reactors won't get him laid at least.
there are plenty of hot nerdy girls out there.
A wise man once said to me "If you chase women you'll always be short of money. If you chase money, you'll never be short of women." I really wish he'd said it when I was a lot younger!
Well done, kid.
Now he needs to make a scalar weapon jk jk
This is a fantastic achievement!
another reason why the end of the world is not near yet.
I agree with you view.
Until the 13 year old supervillains start to come out of the wood works. What then?
The US Government has released a statement regarding this story. It reads: "We will no longer tolerate this escalation of nuclear developement. If you do not desist your testing and experimentations, we will consider your actions to be a prelude to commiting violations with regards to the UN Non-Proliferation of the Nuclear Weapons Agreement. Diplomatic and Economic sanctions will now be enforced. If these sanctions over time become futile then military action will be considered." "You have been warned". ... US Government
Why can't I do any of these things little kids can...
mmmmm well I guess you should blame your parents?
For sure haha they should have signed me up for every extra curricular class available xD
Penwortham Priory Academy sounds like some exclusive school for kids with rich parents. So I'm assuming it's because you didn't have rich parents.
A real life Sheldon Cooper
who gives a kid nuclear material?
Someone who knows nothing dangerous could result from nuclear fusion. 1D2 + 1T3 --> 2He4 + 0n1 + 17.6 MeV That is deuterium + tritium --> Helium-4 + a neutron + energy. The direct "waste products" are Helium-4 and the neutron. The Helium-4 is nothing to be concerned about - it's ordinary stable Helium. Plus the kid was trained in radiation safety.
i know next to nothing about nuclear fusion. all i know is that it require nuclear material, and i know what can be made with nuclear material. i didn't read the site so i don't know the details, but was he being monitored?
