Maximum PC | Windows 8.1 Review

Maximum PC: Reviewing an update to an operating system feels a little odd, doesn’t it? After all, if you already use Windows 8, it’s not like you’re not going to install Windows 8.1. Sure, there’s always the threat of compatibility issues, but Microsoft seems to have this one covered pretty well with the website (and scanning tool) that it’s dedicated to the Windows 8.1 update.

It's definitely an improvement over Windows 8, though I doubt there's enough to convert the anti-Win8 crowd.

It's sure not converting me. Until Metro is 100% optional and can be turned off I'll never make the switch to Windows 8 and skip it just like I did Vista.

My problem with Windows 8 has been and will always be the disjointed desktop experience. Not having a touch-based display makes this even worse since Metro's features are so touch-heavy.

8.1 makes a few (very few) steps in the right direction, but it still seems like a halfhearted attempt to coerce more Windows 7 users to 8. Microsoft is just too damn vested in the whole idea of a "unified experience" across Desktops, Laptops, Tablets, Phones, and gaming consoles -- great idea on paper; poor idea in actual practice.

I feel like my PC was faster with Windows 8. And I don't know if something happened during the installation but now when I'm going to do a defragmenter, 2 new disks (?volume) with a bunch of weird numbers appeared and I have no idea what they are.
