.... and just go for the 'less legal' alternatives, so I can be sure I actually have access to the content, where and when I want it.

I don't mind paying for stuff. I do mind paying for 'semi-rentals' where they throw all kinds of limitations in my face.

I'm sick of all these region-locks and 'localized' stores/content crap anyway.

Well his first mistake was using an apple product. Of course they used tricky headline wording to make it seem like there was DRM issues across the board on google's play store, I was surprised when I read the article to find out this had nothing to do with DRM issues on android phones, but rather a goole play e-books app on iOS. I'd just like to say I'm completely biased against Apple, I don't support or condone their business model.

As for his problem, whatever, in future just cancel any updates while yr abroad and enjoy your books, and if you were only in singapore for a conference, it wouldnt be long before he was back in a google play e-books supported country, he should have used that time to get away from his smart device and go out and soak in the environment and its denizens, making an issue out of a non-issue, slightly self-entitled. Reminds me of that joke by louis ck about the guy giving out about losing wifi on a flight having only discovered it was a thing moments prior. Get over it. Go to the library conference and do your job.

imo its just like netflix, when you reach the last season and the current season is airing, it encourages you to go out and watch the new eps.

and I never got books... of all things books, the pdfs of books are all out there for the taking.

Greed is too powerful in the world we live in today.

i've always said, drm does not work, in fact it's worse than doing nothing.
punishing legitimate users is the best way of promoting piracy.

a pirate would still be reading their books, but the guy who paid?
he's screwed because of drm.

it's like when i buy a dvd or bluray, i get half a dozen trailers at the beginning and then a video about how pirates are having to wait for their movie while i can watch it straight away being a legitimate buyer.
except i fucking can't because of the trailers and this anti piracy bs that the pirate won't have to endure.

it's almost enough to drive me to piracy.
