It's Pronounced "JIF" Not "GIF." Inventor Reminds Us How It's Pronounced

NRM: "In 1987, Steve Wilhite created the GIF (or Graphics Interchange Format). Sixteen years later, he accepted a lifetime achievement award at The Webby Awards, using a GIF for his acceptance speech to confirm, once and for all, that it's pronounced "JIF.""

actually it's pronounced DIF. that's how ridiculous calling it JIF is. GIF pronunciation all the way

Why do we say 'geriatric' with a J? The end.

crxss3988d ago

We say geriatric with a soft G because of how it's spelled. We pronounce gif with a hard G because that's how it's spelled

Its an acronym, so the creators can define the way they want to pronounce it. JIF is certainly correct.

However.

Pronouncing it JIF just confuses what people now understand to be the full meaning of the acronym, G raphics interchange format.

Ok, so the creator can say how he pronounces it. But it can't make a format many accept as starting with a Graphics G be pronounced with a J sound.

It is counterintuitive to English that an acronym would start with a different pronunciation to the word it is shortening...

You actually had me doubting myself for a moment but it's a general rule and not hard and fast.

e.g. Giant, ginger.

and conversely gift.

Also GIF isn't a word, but rather an acronym, so whoever made it up has to right to pronounce it however he likes.

Does it really matter at this point. Everyone knows what you're talking about regardless of how it's pronounced. And if they don't know what you're talking about, they never will.

mrxbox3988d ago

Yeah.. It's just funny when someone says GIF, not JIF.. Plus, it's so crazy these days, that people don't only write it.. They say it too..

An Honor for the Creator of the GIF

Bits blog from The New York Times reports- Among the thousands of file formats that exist in modern computing, the GIF, or Graphics Interchange Format, has attained celebrity status in a sea of lesser-known BMPs, RIPs, FIGs and MIFFs. It was honored as a “word of the year” in 2012, and Tuesday night, its inventor, Steve Wilhite, will be accepting a lifetime achievement award at The Webby Awards.
