Mirolta : Surprisingly enough, SMS and text messages services are 20 years old as of 2012. The same building blocks of technology that started the SMS services are still the basis for how the technology is used today, although in a more advanced form. What threatens the use of SMS in today’s world, is the ever-changing and evolving cellular network.

Right now, there are many alternatives to traditional SMS text services, including Apple’s iMessage, WhatsApp, Viber, and Facebook Instant Messaging. These other systems use IP connections to send the messages, rather than the SMS network. This has driven the use of traditional SMS texts down by a significant amount....

haven't they already killed it off.

soon voice calls through the service provider will also die off and people will use VOIP service which are also a fraction of the cost. at least i started doing that already.

normally calls will be 120<insert currency> peak time for an hour of talking. with a voip service, im paying around 30 <insert same currency as above> for the same time. basically the saving is massive.
