Originally coined by Fred Wilson, it’s been evangelized into 2012’s biggest buzzword. Its advocates point to Facebook’s Sponsored Stories and Twitter’s Promoted Tweets as well as experiments from the likes of Forbes and The Atlantic as evidence of the category’s growing prominence. More recently, however, skepticism in the media and backlash from consumers has started to cast doubts about the native model."
